Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park Twee Rivieren to Mata Mata

2021 trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park, spending a little over a week on an overlanding road trip around the Kgalagadi. In episode 1, we shuttle between Twee Rivieren and Mata Mata as well as taking a detour across the dunes to the Nossob River, with a 2 night stay at the stunning Kalahari Tented Camp.

Some awesome game viewing with lions, cheetahs and the greatest treat of all, a leopard chilling on a low tree branch less than 150 metres from the road. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park really is one of my favourite game reserves in South Africa. Although it's becoming more and more popular, with the accompanying increase in traffic and difficulty securing a booking, it's still so well worth the effort in reaching this remote spot.

Next episode we will travel overland across the Kalahari dunes to an upmarket lodge close, iXaus in the south west of the Kgalagadi National Park, close to the Namibian border, a real treat. And, the best of all, perfect timing brought us close up with a cheetah family.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park Part 2 | !Xaus Lodge and Nossob Rest Camp

Part 2 of our Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park 2021 trip to !Xaus Lodge and Nossob Rest Camp. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park really is one of my favourite game reserves in South Africa. Although it's becoming ever more popular and has a somewhat limited number of rest camps, it's still so well worth the effort in reaching this remote spot.

In this episode we traveled overland across the Kalahari dunes to an upmarket lodge, !Xaus in the south west of the Kgalagadi National Park, close to the Namibian border, a real treat. We only stayed 1 night which isn't enough, I definitely recommend 2, or even 3 nights to get the best from it. Then it was across the park again to the Nossob River and a long trek northwards to Nossob Rest Camp, also only for 1 night unfortunately. We booked the trip at the very last minute, so had to take whatever accommodation was available, mostly cancellations, so choice was limited.

Clarity: when talking about Nossob Rest Camp, I mentioned that it's better than Twee Rivieren, I was referring to the camp sites rather than the entire rest camp, and it's of course a purely personal point of view anyway. There is NOTHING at all wrong with Twee Rivieren, it's a great rest camp with excellent facilities and accommodation.

Call of the Kalahari | Episode 1 of 3 | Kgalagadi Transfrontier | Van Zylsrus, Twee Rivieren, Nossob

In January 2022 we visited the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park for the first time. This was my 55th birthday gift from Delwynne.

The park spans South Africa and Botswana, borders Namibia and measures 38,000 square kilometers.

This was a trip of a lifetime and we were rewarded with an abundance of wildlife, landscapes and sunsets. Experience this trip with us.

In this episode we travel to the park via Vanzylsrus and then stay at Twee Rivieren and then Nossob.

The park's website is here:

Kgalagadi Lodge Review | Overlanding to Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park South Africa

Overlanding trip and review of the Kgalagadi Lodge, an ideal stopover at a privately owned establishment only 5km from the entrance to Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park. There are super well equipped chalets as well as camping sites with private ablution facilities, electrical points and water. There's also a restaurant and bar area that serves very decent burgers, steaks and pizzas. The swimming pool is perfect to cool off after a day on the road in a place where summer temperatures often reach the lower 40's.

Our stay was entirely at our own expense and was not at the invitation of the lodge, so it's my fully independent and unbiased opinion. We stayed in December 2020.

NB! our stay was before restrictions on alcohol sales came into effect in South Africa.

In January 2021, Owen Grobler and I visited the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park during an exceptionally wet rainy season, which had transformed the park into a lush, green paradise. We had two full weeks in the Kgalagadi and explored all three main camps, Twee Rivieren, Nossob and Mata-Mata, as well as most of the wilderness camps.

In this short film, I share all the highlights from this amazing green kalahari trip, including some of the best lion, leopard and cheetah sightings I've ever had in the Kgalagadi! So sit back, relax and enjoy our adventure.

Kalahari Tented Camp Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park Glamping Review

The Kalahari Tented Camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park in the far north of South Africa is an incredibly special place. It's located close to the Namibian border, in the western part of this vast wilderness, one of the last true wilderness areas in South Africa.

The camp is unfenced, which means that the wildlife, including big predators like lions, cheetah, hyena and leopards are free to wander through the camp. And they do as well.

It's not luxury, but it's very comfortable, I guess it's what you would call glamping. And it's an awesomely spectacular part of the world in which to do it.

But be warned: if you don't plan your trip to the Kgalagadi carefully, you might be very disappointed, not only because the Kalahari Desert is a place of extreme temperatures, but also because the roads are bad, animals numbers are relatively low and the accommodation options vary greatly.

Autumn April in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier National Park with Joes Camera

Visiting the Kgalagadi Transfrontier park during the green season of January to March is a special experience and people flock in their thousands to the Kalahari but it does not represent the typical Kalahari so to say. So to return in April so soon afterwards takes about a day to get used to. The lush long grasses have lost their deep green almost blue colour and have quickly over the last week of March and start of April turned into the light beige to whites with bulging plumes of seeds at the top ends leaving the top of the grasses to look like they have been covered by a cotton duvet all along the landscape. The trees stay green however. In many respects the predators camouflage, more suite the arid conditions and lion especially the mane of male lions specifically blend in beautifully with the grasses.
In the green season they stood out more drastically but the length of the grasses provided for great hiding place to ambush prey in without running long distances.
Now The green is gone, but the seeds on the grasses remain in the transitional phase from the rainy to the winter season that starts abruptly in Early May when temperatures plummet to minus’ during the evenings. Prolonged rains during the rainy season especially the late rains ensured that thousands of seed eating birds made nests in the Kgalagadi area and not migrate out towards the surrounding Namaqua area when follow up rains doesn’t occur.

The Kgalagadi or the Kalahari Gemsbok Park side of the Transfrontier area at least was visited by us during the end of April after the exceptional good rains of January February and into March but the temperatures have cooled down substantially already. Due to the prolific seeds on grasses the seed eating birds were nesting more than usual and the rodents populations exploded after a couple of dry seasons saw a drastic reduction in their numbers.
It is mysterious to say the least how these populations can explode in one good season. This caused the animals to spread out into the dunes and other areas such as the north east into Botswana. The springbok for instance do not like the long thick grass and shrubs and leave for the pans and shorter grassy areas and spread out over the kgalagadi region. They were very scares in the southern triangle over the week we patrolled the area. Gemsbok were still found in large groups in both the southern Auob and Nossob river beds and inner veld.
The rodent eaters were therefore also spread out and not so many but well conditioned like all other animals except the springbok that actually thrive in harsher conditions due to their feeding habits. All Lizards and Geckos were uncomfortable fat almost round. We saw more young Agamas than during anytime over the past three decades.
Every trip to the Kalahari normally surprises one with a good sighting of a specific or different species or unique animal behavior. This time Secretary birds were the fun animal to observe and photograph. Some actually used the side of the road to hunt and used our vehicle to chase mice from the road towards it walking along the riverbed following our vehicle. Mice would sit high on the bushes next to the road basking in the sun in the first branches right next to the road and as soon as our vehicle approaches they would be scared and run down the shrubs away from the vehicle but right towards and into the secretary bird that was walking along the road next to our vehicle. Taking advantage of the slow moving vehicle. This shows the remarkable intelligence of the secretary bird through behavior that was shaped by accepting the roads and vehicles over generations as part of their habitat and getting used to vehicles sharing their hunting space. Many other species are also showing adapted behavior by tolerating or using vehicles to hunt or by plainly getting more used to vehicles such as the leopards and jackal as well as lion compared to even three decades ago when I started visiting the kalahari. Obviously then there were much less vehicles and tourist development.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park Overland Road Trip

In this overlanding road trip to the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park video, unique wildlife footage, plus loads of useful tips & information, gained from personal experience, to help plan your trip when visiting the park. The park stretches across 38 000 km2 of the Kalahari Desert and is unique in that it crosses the international border between South Africa and Botswana. Visitors are free to roam within the park, without limits in both countries.

This is wild and untamed Africa, no paved roads, mobile phone or internet reception. It's remote and hard to reach, the Kgalagadi is no Kruger Park. It's truly one of Africa's last great wilderness areas, and for those who make the effort to go there, it's SO worth it!

The name Kgalagadi is derived from the San word for land of great thirst. Water is scarce and only the very toughest survive. It's not a big 5 game reserve, animals that require abundant water like elephants, buffalo, rhino and zebra can't survive in this harsh, dry and unforgiving environment. But massive black manned Kalahari lions, shy leopards and swift cheetahs, the main big cat predators in the park, have a bountiful choice of antelope from which to choose their next potential meal.

Mata Mata Rest Camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park by SANParks

Mata Mata rest camp in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park is on the Namibian border on the western boundary of the SANParks reserve. It's my personal favourite overlanding destination, smaller than the other 2 main rest camps and more intimate. There is just such a nice vibe every time we visit as this review shows.

We've always had great game viewing along the Auob River, especially lions, and this time we were rewarded with a sighting of a female leopard who goes by the name of Itumeleng (which means Joy in the Tswana language). It's always special seeing a leopard, but seeing one so close to the road, low down in a tree and whose name you know, is that much more special.

If you are heading to the Kgalagadi, I definitely recommend staying at Mata Mata Rest Camp, it won't disappoint. Great staff, well maintained and clean, a great job by SANParks.

Campsite Review: Nossob General Camp, Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park (Camping South Africa)

We break away from the #ZimZambeziEpic for a few weeks to bring you our recent adventure, and campsite review, from the SANParks' Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.

Nossob Rest Camp has to be our favourite campsite in the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park on the South African side. The premium sites are first prize, certainly, but the general campsites are also amazing. SANParks really does a great job of their sites in the Kgalagadi, and Nossob is no exception.

Always remember to book for Nossob (and the Kgalagadi in general) well in advance to secure spots.

Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park vs Kruger National Park ????????

South Africa is blessed with numerous wild spaces and national parks. Perhaps the best known are the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park and it's more famous counterpart, The Kruger National Park. Both are special places where it's possible to disengage completely from the world and experience nature at it's most raw.

Both parks have aspects that will appeal to some more than others, so this shootout video, where I compare the Kgalagadi vs The Kruger, based on my own experiences in both parks, will show the pluses and minuses of both.

When I set out to make this video, I was almost certain that I knew which would come out ahead, but, I surprised myself when the results were tallied. As I said, this is my own subjective opinion, I would love to hear your views, so let me know in the comments.
