Explore Almaty: A Tour of Kazakhstan's Hottest City's Hidden Gems

Almaty is the largest city in Kazakhstan and the former capital of the country. It is a cultural, economic and historical hub that offers a variety of attractions and experiences for travelers. In this documentary, we will explore the history, culture, nature and cuisine of this fascinating city and its surroundings.

We will start our journey by learning about the origins of Almaty, which dates back to the 13th century when it was founded by the Mongols as Almatu. We will visit some of the oldest buildings and monuments in the city, such as the Central Mosque of Almaty, the Ascension Cathedral and the Park of 28 Panfilov Guardsmen. We will also discover how Almaty became a melting pot of different ethnic groups, especially Russians who settled here in large numbers since the 18th century.

Next, we will explore the modern side of Almaty, which boasts a vibrant and cosmopolitan atmosphere. We will stroll along the streets lined with shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, and admire the architecture that reflects both Soviet and contemporary influences. We will also visit some of the museums and theaters that showcase the artistic and intellectual achievements of Almaty's residents. We will also get a taste of Almaty's famous chocolate at the Rakhat Chocolate Factory, which has been producing sweet treats since 1942.

Then, we will head to the outskirts of Almaty, where we will find stunning natural scenery and outdoor activities. We will take a cable car to the Kok Tobe Tower, which stands on top of Kok Tobe Mountain and offers panoramic views of the city and the surrounding mountains. We will also visit the Medeu Gorge, where we will see the world's highest ice skating rink and learn about the sport of bandy, which is popular in Kazakhstan. We will also go to the Shymbulak Ski Resort, which hosted some events of the 2011 Asian Winter Games and offers skiing and snowboarding opportunities for all levels.

Finally, we will venture further away from Almaty to explore some of the most spectacular natural wonders of Kazakhstan. We will drive to the Big Almaty Lake, which is a turquoise gem nestled in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains. We will also visit the Charyn Canyon, which is often compared to the Grand Canyon in terms of its size and beauty. We will marvel at the rock formations that have been shaped by erosion over millions of years.

Along the way, we will sample some of the delicious dishes that Almaty has to offer, such as beshbarmak, manty, plov, and more. We will also learn about the customs and traditions that make Almaty a unique and diverse city. We will meet some of the friendly and hospitable locals who will share their stories and insights with us.

We will end our documentary by checking into one of the luxurious hotels in Almaty, such as the Ritz Carlton Almaty or the Voyage Hotel. We will reflect on our amazing adventure and look forward to returning to this enchanting city someday.

Medeu/Almaty:
The Medeu, (Kazakh: Медеу; Medeu) is an outdoor speed skating and bandy rink. It consists of 10.5 thousand square meters of ice and utilizes a sophisticated freezing and watering system to ensure the quality of the ice.
The Medeu is a high-altitude sports complex near Almaty, located at an altitude of 1691 meters above sea level. It is considered to be the world's largest high-mountain skating rink. The skating rink was named after the Maloalmatinsky volost Medeu Pusurmanov. He built three wooden huts for the wintering of his family there, and began the development of the tract in the foothills of the Zailiysky Alatau. Medeu became a well-known entrepreneur, patron of educational institutions, and participated in the planting of the city.
Tourism:
There are several hiking trails that originate from the Medeu main bus stop. There is access to the Shymbulak Skiing resort from the Medeu cable car station. This involves a 15-20 minute scenic ride above the area's mountain tops and rivers. Kimassar trail is a 2 hour hike to the top of Furmanov Peak, where hikers have access to swinging on iconic wooden swings. Shymbulak/Almaty:
Shymbulak is a ski resort near Almaty. It is the largest ski resort in Central Asia. It is located in the upper part of the Medeu Valley in the Zaiilisky Alatau mountain range, at an elevation of 2,200 metres (7,200 ft) above sea level. The resort area is about 25 kilometres (16 mi) south of Almaty city by Medeo road. It is popular for its mild climate, large quantity of sunny days and great amount of snow through the winter.
Shymbulak (also known as Chimbulak) was disscovered by amateur skiers in the 1940s. Soon after, it became the first downhill route in the Soviet Union. Skiers originally needed to climb up the mountain tops on foot (which took roughly 3 hours). In 1954 a 1500 meters ski tow was built. Starting from 1961, Shymbulak hosted several USSR Championships and the Silver Edelweisse prize skiing competitions. In 1983 it became the Olympic ski training center for the USSR. During this time, various commodities were built including restaurants and hotels.
The annual Artyemenko Prize competition has been held in Shymbulak since 2011. The competition is held on February. Almaty hosted the 2011 Asian Winter Games, bid for 2014 Winter Olympics, considered a bid for 2018 Winter Olympics, but decided to bid for 2022 Winter Olympics instead; Shymbulak was a venue for the Alpine Skiing events (both speed and technical), and would have been for the latter.
The ski areas span over 3000 ft of vertical drop (920m) and nearly 7.5 miles (12km) of ski runs. There are three ski lifts at the resort with the highest going to 3200 meters above sea level. There is also a Hotel located at the Resort, enabling those wishing to ski during the day, have a place to stay at night.
It is popular for its mild climate, large quantity of sunny days and great amount of snow through the winter (from November till May). The resort offers a ski and snowboard school. There is also Shymbulak hotel (4 stars) and ski, snowboard and sleigh rentals.

Almaty - apple city

Almaty, the largest and the most hustling and bustling city of Kazakhstan, is certainly the most vibrant city in the whole of Central Asia. This leafy city of Almaty adorned by the snow-capped peaks of Zailiysky Alatau has the most unique amalgamation of soviet, European and a central Asian vibe. This city which had once been one of the stops of the famous silk route, is also known as the birthplace of apples.
