Antarctic Peninsula 2019 - Kayaking with Whales

This Video is about our part of the trip to the Antarctic Peninsula. One day, in the morning and in the afternoon we got the opportunity to kayak with whales. It was the most amazing experience we have ever had. The whales
knew we were there, they were playing with us.

The Antarctic Kayak Experience

Whether you’re interested in meeting Antarctica’s iconic penguins, endemic seals, or wondrous whale species, much of the wildlife you could encounter during your expedition cruise to Earth’s largest continent will appear in or along the water.

Not surprisingly, then, Antarctic kayaking is one of the best ways to experience it – which this video will amply demonstrate.

In these brief but colorful clips, you will see why kayaking in Antarctica continues to be one of our most popular polar activities. There really is no better way to leave behind the noise of the ship and the snapping of photographs than in a kayak.

As you coast over frigid waters filled with dazzling ice formations hundreds or even thousands of years old, you will have a good chance of encountering many of Antarctica’s exotic animal residents. You will also enjoy some of the most ruggedly beautiful shorelines anywhere on the planet.

Antarctic kayaking is a peaceful, natural, sensorially absorbing way to take in this incredible continent. Aside from going for a swim, you cannot get closer to Antarctica’s amazing marine life than having a whale surface beside your kayak or seeing seals and penguins swimming underneath it.

Though we obviously cannot guarantee such things will happen during your particular voyage, the possibilities of what you might encounter while kayaking in Antarctica are nearly limitless.

Seal species we sometimes see during our Antarctic kayaking trips include leopard seals, Weddell seals, and crabeater seals. We also tend to spot certain species of whale, such as blue whales, minkes, fins, and humpbacks. As for penguins, Antarctica’s most recognizable seabird, our Antarctic kayaking outings may encounter gentoos, chinstraps, Adélies, or more.

Depending on which area of the continent you choose to explore, the species you will run into while kayaking in Antarctica can be strikingly different.

But wherever you go, our mission is always the same: to show you as many spectacular shorelines, eye-popping ice sculptures, and unique polar animals as possible. And though these images were shot on an Antarctic kayaking trip, we offer a wide range of Arctic kayaking expeditions as well.

Check out our full range of Arctic and Antarctic kayaking trips below, and let’s go exploring!

Kayaking in Antarctica

Go on the ultimate adventure in Antarctica with Intrepid Travel:

Most of the time, on our Antarctic expeditions, you’ll be cruising in comfort aboard our polar vessels. But if you want more freedom to explore, then kayaking might be for you. You’re captain of this ship, as you navigate through passages that the ship and zodiacs can’t reach. Get up close to playful penguins and sleepy seals lounging on ice floes, and without the rumble of a motor, you’ll truly appreciate how quiet, vast and beautiful this place is.

Go kayaking in Antarctica with Intrepid Travel.

Intrepid Travel has come a long way since its humble beginnings in 1989. A company that began with two bearded backpackers, a typewriter and a kitchen table now leads 100,000 travellers across the globe each year.

And although we’re a bit larger these days – with 1,000 local staff based around the world and over 800 different trips across every continent (not to mention multiple kitchen tables) – our mission remains the same. We still get a kick out of responsible travel, small groups and very (very) big adventures.

KAYAKING IN ANTARCTICA WITH WHALES | Polar Plunge Antarctica

Day seven of our Antarctica journey! Today, we did two significant things: kayaking in Antarctica, and swimming in Antarctica! Well - it was a quick dip aka Polar Plunge Antarctica.

We started off with an excursion in the famous Neko Harbour, one of the most beautiful places in Antarctica. It is worth mentioning that this is March 20th, which is the Autumnal Equinox here in the southern hemisphere. Starting today, Antarctica will lose 24 minutes per day until it reaches the deep winter season.

We saw tons of ice, penguins, both minke and humpback whales and witnessed a few ice calvings. Unfortunately we didn't capture the Antarctica ice collapsing on camera, but we tried really hard. You really have to be on your game to get video like that.

In the afternoon, our journey continued with kayaking in Paradise Harbor, Antarctica. Snow didn't stop us cruising through the ice and the cool landscape and ocean.

Halef continued the Antarctica cruise's tradition of polar plunge at Brown Base in Paradise Harbour! It was a cold, frigid waters here!

We had a surprise event back at the ship, where Helen and Tom got married. The Antarctica wedding was officiated by our Akademik Ioffe captain. It was enjoyable for everybody to witness, and we wish Helen and Tom the greatest future together!

If you are curious about what to wear in Antarctica, check out our post - What to Pack For Antarctica. It's a guide to what you'll need to bring with you for clothing. And unlike other lists, ours is pretty inexpensive!
