Karatu District is one of the seven districts in the Arusha Region of Tanzania. It is bordered by the Ngorongoro District to the north, the Shinyanga Region to the west, the Monduli District to the east, and the Manyara Region to the south and southeast.
According to the 2002 Tanzania National Census, the population of the Karatu District was 178,434.
Karatu Town

Visitors on their way to the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater pass through the town of Karatu, under the benevolent peak of Ol Deani, on their way through the northern highlands. After climbing the Manyara Escarpment, the vegetation becomes more lush and green, finally entering into the highlands around Karatu. The extinct volcano of Ol Deani has gentle slopes and it is a prominent feature of the landscape.
In the past, the area around Karatu and Ol Deani was of great importance to the German colonial administration. The area’s cool climate, verdant hills, and pleasing views make it popular with settlers and farmers. Vast and extensive fields cover the slopes of the volcano and the lands around Karatu town. Coffee was a main crop grown for export, and a few large farms that remained in private hands still cultivate the cash crop on the hills and small valleys outside of town. Karatu offers splendid views of the northern highlands and is a popular base for visitors on their way to Ngorongoro Crater.

The group was established as Sandemu Iraqw Art and Culture Promoters in the year 2000 in Bashay village of Karatu district, Arusha region. This group has built a show centre to display the traditional culture of the Iraqw people. The Iraqw is the main ethnic group living in Karatu and Mbulu districts. They also live in Babati and Hanang districts. Their objective is to compile for posterity, a record of the lifestyle, traditions, history and culture of the Iraqw people, and also to involve and benefit local people in cultural tourism, thereby disseminating information and knowledge of the ancient traditions to the world.

Walking tours in the villages, mountains and bush, organized according to the interests of the visitors, and vary from several hours to several days (Walking tours can be extended to include the Hadzabe and Datogan in Lake Eyasi.)
Visits to development projects schools, dispensaries, hospitals, historical sites like German and British settlements, coffee plantations, and graves in Oldeani on the rim of the Oldeani Mountain and Ngorongoro Crater.
Traditional Iraqw meals - ugali (stiff porridge) with meat, vegetables, milk, fresh honey, kande (maize and beans) and more.

In this special short video - I went to a town in Tanzania called, Karatu. This town is where a large portion of this unique tribe of Tanzania stays. The Tribe is called Iraqw. What make this tribe so unique is their African Genetics that make up this special group of people.
Their Genetics/Ancestors are Ethiopian & Somalian Mix. As the story goes they originated from Ethiopia in the Oromo Region & a large group of the people traveled south to Somalia living there for a few hundreds of years then later going to Tanzania & settling there.
There is more to this special story & union between Somalia & Ethiopia & Most of All The people of Iraqw. The Iraqw Tribe understands where their Ancestors come from but Love there Tanzanian home & there own Traditions & Cultures they made for themselves. Into a Datoga's House
Datoga is a nomad living in Central Tanzania. The tribal people undertake stockbreeding in the wild for a long period of time and only come back to tribe during the yearly rainy season. The clay house they built looks coarse and mediocre. However, the interior was built with several traditional techniques to make it sturdy enough to withstand the blowing wind and scorching sun in the rugged land of Africa. Six months away, the special smell of the dried cow dung mixed with straws and wooden fire in the Datoga house we visited that day is still fresh in our memory.

The Serengeti National Park is Africa's most famous. Renowned for its incredible concentrations of predators and the Great Migration of two million grazers, a safari here is guaranteed to be exceptional. The endless grassy plains are amongst the richest grazing grounds in the African bush, and therefore home to the largest herds and the highest concentrations of predators on the planet.
The Serengeti Africa is one of those very rare places that has a huge reputation, yet still somehow manages to surpass expectations and take your breath away. Surrounded by remarkable tribes such as the Massai and Hadzabe, this wider area is also fascinating from a cultural perspective. The whole park is a world heritage site, and the varied eco-system coupled with the huge volume of wildlife means you can spend ample time in different locations and never feel like you’ve seen it all. From the dramatic Kjopes in the north, to the acacia dotted endless plains to the south, it is not just the animals which makes a safari in the Serengeti so remarkable. In a nutshell, it is rightly the most celebrated wildlife reserves in the world; there is nowhere else to match it. It is outstanding!
Serengeti National Park | The Wildlife
There is such a variety of species to be found in the Serengeti and definitely too great a number to mention here, which is why it is such an integral part of a Tanzania safari. The park's main attraction is the Great Migration, consisting of up to 2 million wildebeest, 200,000 zebras and 350,000 thompson, impala and grant's gazelles - many consider it to be the most spectacular remaining African wildlife spectacle. The predator viewing here is exceptional with approximately 3-4,000 lion and huge numbers of cheetah, leopard and hyena. Other animals commonly found in the park include topi, eland, hartebeest, buffalo, elephant, caracal, serval, bat-eared fox, hyrax, genet, hares, porcupine, aardvark, giraffe, jackal, mongoose, crocodile, monitor lizard, aardwolf, many kinds of primates including baboons, vervet and colobus monkeys, and over 500 species of bird.
Where is the Serengeti?
The Serengeti is the main component of a Northern Tanzania Safari Itinerary. It is a vast stretch of endless plains brimming with wildlife in the North East of Tanzania - Tanzania's border changes it to Kenya's famous Masai Mara. It is only a short flight from Arusha (along with many other Northern airstrips!) - a flight you absolutely must consider if you are ever visiting other Northern Tanzania parks. Many travellers also visit Northern Tanzania to experience the vibrant Maasai culture in the Ngorongoro Highlands, but also to go into the Ngorongoro Crater itself. There are also other smaller surrounding parks, Lake Manyara and Tarangire, but these are more add on destinations - The Serengeti in our view is the real star of the show.
When to go to the Serengeti National Park
To focus solely on the Great Migration would be to do this park a grave injustice. Even taking the Great Migration out of the equation, it can be argued that the Serengeti is still the finest park in Africa. Vast herds of grazers, huge prides of lion, spectacular expanses of uninterrupted views, wildebeest river crossings, great leopard sightings, fantastic vast cheetah inhabited plains and some of the best camps in Africa - as such, it is an incredible safari destination year-round.
Serengeti Migration | When is the Great Migration in the Serengeti?
The Wildebeest Migration is often thought to be the star of the show on a Tanzania holiday. Contrary to popular misconceptions, the herds can be seen in the Serengeti all year round. There are some better months to visit to get the full impact of the sheer size of the herds such as in July – October when they are crossing the mighty Mara River in Northern Serengeti (see our videos of crossings here), or in February when they all congregate for calving season in the southern Ndutu plains.

La terza parte del reportage realizzato in Tanzania, dove l'agricoltura rappresenta la fonte primaria di sostentamento per la maggior parte della popolazione, prima di portarci tra le coltivazioni di caffè nella regione di Arusha tra Kilimangiaro e Karatu dove saliremo sulle montagne per incontrare i contadini e scoprire finalmente le piantagioni, ci farà conoscere altre comunità rurali che si dedicano alla coltivazione ed alla pastorizia, tra queste incontreremo i Datoga.
I componenti della tribù Datoga provengono dall’Etiopia o dal Sud Sudan, sono cacciatori, allevatori e agricoltori. Gli uomini sono anche molto abili nella lavorazione del metallo. Raccolgono metalli di scarto che fondono con metodi rudimentali per realizzare frecce appuntite che poi barattano con i cacciatori della tribù Hadzabè, oppure oggetti ornamentali che fanno parte del loro abbigliamento tradizionale.
Le donne lavorano le pelli con le quali confezionano abiti decorati con perline Masai.
Non sono nomadi ma abitano in modeste costruzioni di legno e fango.
Un tempo godevano della reputazione di feroci guerrieri, temuti e rispettati dalle tribù Masai.
I loro rituali di iniziazione dei giovani prevedevano dimostrazioni di coraggio come ad esempio abbattere un leone, un bufalo o persino un elefante.
Oggi vivono più pacificamente coltivando la terra ed allevando bestiame.
Tuttavia mantengono un atteggiamento distaccato, preferiscono rimanere isolati nella loro cultura limitando l’integrazione verso lo sviluppo “moderno”.
“Il mio contributo alla diffusione della cultura del caffè o del tè non è di tipo tecnico, non sono un botanico e nemmeno un sommelier, certo in questi ultimi venti anni ho acquisito una discreta esperienza ma per fortuna ho ancora molto da scoprire. Sono curioso e mi piace condividere le esperienze vissute, spesso esco dal tema stretto della lavorazione del caffè o del tè per dare spazio alla narrazione dei luoghi e dei popoli che ne fanno parte.
Durante le mie “spedizioni” tra le comunità agricole e rurali ho incontrato popolazioni di origini diverse ed anche molto lontane. Dall’Africa all’Estremo Oriente, dall’America Latina all’Indonesia, ho appreso l’importanza della tradizione e del rito, il valore della saggezza popolare ed il senso della comunità. Tutto questo per molti popoli contribuisce a preservare l’equilibrio con il creato.
Mi interessa l’idea di offrire agli amanti del caffè o del tè un punto di vista geografico ed etnografico, nutro la speranza che tutto questo possa contribuire ad una maggiore consapevolezza nelle scelte di consumo che ogni uno di noi esercita ogni giorno. Troppo spesso consumiamo distrattamente la nostra bevanda preferita, inconsapevoli del legame esistente tra la terra e la tazzina.
