KANAMARA MATSURI (PENIS FESTIVAL), KAWASAKI JAPAN, 2 April 2023 かなまら祭り (VISIT JAPAN in SPRING)

2 April 2023. One of the few unusual festivals in Japan!
“The Kanamara Matsuri (aka the Penis Festival) at Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki features phallic images in everything from the decorations to snacks. かなまら祭り

There is also a mikoshi (portable shrine) parade of numerous giant phalli just before noon. Men in drag carry the pink “Elizabeth Mikoshi,” donated by a drag queen club called Elizabeth.

Kanayama Shrine was popular with sex workers from the local tea houses who prayed for protection from sexually transmitted diseases. The gods of mining and blacksmiths, Kanayamahiko and Kanayamahime, respectively, are enshrined in it. This might sound totally unrelated to phalli; however, Japanese legend says that they healed the Shinto goddess Izanami after she gave birth to a fire god. because of this myth, people prayed to these gods regarding matters of STDs, childbirth, etc.

Another story tells of a demon who fell in love with a woman and hid inside her vagina, biting off her newlywed husband’s penis, twice. She then sought help from a blacksmith, who made her a metal phallus. It broke the demon’s teeth and sent him off for good. They later enshrined it in Kanayama Shrine as a sort of commemoration.”

The Kanamara Matsuri (Festival of the Steel Phallus) is an annual Shinto fertility festival held in Kawasaki, Japan in spring. The exact dates vary: the main festivities fall on the first Sunday in April. The penis forms the central theme of the event that's reflected everywhere; in illustrations, candy, carved vegetables, decoration, a parade of mikoshis, etc.

The Kanamara Matsuri is centered around a local penis-venerating shrine, once popular among prostitutes who wished to pray for protection against sexually transmitted diseases. It is said that there are divine protections also in business prosperity and the clan's prosperity, easy delivery, marriage, and married couple harmony, etc. Today, the festival is used to raise money for HIV research. There's also a legend of a demon that hid inside a young girl and castrated two young men on their wedding nights before a blacksmith fashioned an iron phallus that was used to break the demon's teeth, leading to the enshrinement of the item.

This Tokyo guide for How to Japanese Summer Festival aka Japanese Matsuri is focused on Mikoshi. In this Japan guide, we follow Naoto, a Japanese Man, behind the scenes at this Japanese mikoshi festival called Kitazawa Hachiman Aki Matsuri. We’ll also be joining his Mikoshi team “Shin-no-Mutsumi” in Shimokitazawa Tokyo Japan. This is a Japan Guide as well as Tokyo Guide to how Japanese men participate in Japanese Festivals like Mikoshi and what a Japanese Man would wear like the Japanese Happi, Japanese Obi and Tabi shoes.

Mikoshi, is a traditional ritual held during that happens at some Japanese festivals. Mikoshi is the name of the portable Shinto Shrine that people carry around. Followers believe it serves as a vehicle to transport the God while moving between its main shrine and around throughout the neighborhood and spread its power among the people. Japanese Men and Woment who carry the Mikoshi, wildly bounce the portable shrine up and down with crazy high energy because it’s believed to Amuse the God inside.

Kanamara Matsuri, Kawasaki, Japan 05 April 2015

Japan’s most unique festival??

???? Kanamara Matsuri, the pinnacle of Japanese strange festivals, is held every April at Kanayama Shrine in Kawasaki City, Kanagawa Prefecture (just a short walk from Kawasaki Daishi Station on the Keikyu Daishi Line)!

???? The “Elizabeth Mikoshi”, with its huge male genitals painted pink, is a perfect installation. The specialty “Childbirth Candy,” which can only be licked here, is sure to sell out early in the day!

???? Every year, the festival is crowded with visitors looking for good luck in procreation, childbirth, or marriage. You can see men and women of all ages munching on the candy in broad daylight.

???? What do you think about this traditional Japanese festival?
