Alaska in June

When is the best time to visit Alaska? Our summer season runs May 10 to September 15 with average temperatures in the 60’s to low 70’s, 16–24 hrs of daylight, leaves and flowers in bloom, rushing rivers, and the best wildlife viewing.

In researching your trip, you may see other dates mentioned:

Peak season is June to August. By mid-June, it’s as warm as it’s going to get. All summer activities are available, including The Denali Park Road (opens second week in June).

Check out excursions you can do on your trip at the link below:

Did you know that you can often get discounts when visiting Alaska in the months of April and September and that the peak visiting month is July? Alaska is one of the most beautiful wilderness destinations in the world, but there are better times to visit it than others. Though there are things to do in Alaska at all times of the year, the spring and summer activities are a good deal more popular than the fall and winter ones. In this video, we’ll be exploring the best time to visit Alaska on a month-by-month basis.

Though there are people who visit Alaska during the winter months, tourist season is generally considered to first start in April. April is when things start kicking into gear, though it’s still colder and darker than the summer months. Things get even more vibrant in May, though June and July are considered to be the peaks month to visit Alaska by most. July is when the days are longest and the weather is at its warmest, though these facts also mean that Alaska can be a good deal busier in July than it is during other months.

You’ll still find plenty of summer tourists visiting Alaska in August, but there’s no question that things are starting to die down. Things die down even more in September, though you’ll still find some tourists that are anxious to get a view of Alaska’s encroaching fall scenery. Things start to become dead during the later months of the fall, as the weather starts getting colder and popular activities start getting fewer and farther between. One of the only reasons that you’ll find people in Alaska during the fall is to go fishing.

During the winter, there are plenty of activities that bring people to Alaska. These include skiing, snowshoeing, dog sledding, and checking out the northern lights. However, visiting during the winter isn’t nearly as popular with the masses as visiting during the summer. Join Viewcation as we explore the best time to visit Alaska, month by month.

Alaska Travel Guide - Best Places to Visit and Things to do in Alaska in 2022

Alaska  is a state located in the Western United States on the northwest extremity of North America. A semi-exclave of the U.S., it borders the Canadian province of British Columbia and the Yukon territory to the east; it also shares a maritime border with the Russian Federation's Chukotka Autonomous Okrug to the west, just across the Bering Strait. To the north are the Chukchi and Beaufort seas of the Arctic Ocean, while the Pacific Ocean lies to the south and southwest.

The U.S. is a country of 50 states covering a vast swath of North America, with Alaska in the northwest and Hawaii extending the nation’s presence into the Pacific Ocean. Major Atlantic Coast cities are New York, a global finance and culture center, and capital Washington, DC. Midwestern metropolis Chicago is known for influential architecture and on the west coast, Los Angeles' Hollywood is famed for filmmaking.

Juneau Alaska & An Island of Brown Bears (Glaciers, Whales & Hikes)

Juneau is the capital of Alaska and the base for most cruise passengers coming to see Alaska's Glacier Bay. I visited at the end of August to explore this charming coastal city and the wildlife within. I saw my first brown bears on Chichagof Island, followed whales in the sea, and ate some delicious seafood.

IS ALASKA RIGHT FOR YOU? - How to Travel to Alaska

First of all, if you’ve never looked at a road map of Alaska, check out google maps for a minute. There are VERY few roads in the entire state. So unless you’re a bush plane pilot there are really only a few locations that are even accessible by car.

We’ve divided Alaska in to the 3 most visited regions in the state:

1. Interior Alaska: the home of Fairbanks, The Dalton Highway, Denali National Park and the cute town of Talkeetna

The Kenai Peninsula
In our opinion, if you are flying in or driving to Alaska you really can have a TOTAL Alaska experience by just visiting the Kenai Peninsula. Here’s 8 quick reasons:
1. People fly in from all over the world just to fish the salmon in the Russian River.
2. If you’re looking for other fishing, you can always book Halibut fishing out of Homer or Seward/seward. Hope you catch more fish than we did.
3. Kenai Fjords National Park is home to the Harding icefield and its 30 outflowing glaciers….or nearly 40 glaciers. The National Park site said both numbers. We can all agree that’s a lot of ice.
4. The Kenai is packed with wildlife: bald eagles, humpback whales, orcas, sea otters, sheep, bears…just to name a few. If you’re as bad at spotting wildlife as we are, you can always visit the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center and see just about everything including musk ox, which might be our new favorite friends.
5. In the Kenai peninsula alone you’ll find some of Alaska’s best museums, aquarium and again, the Alaska wildlife conservation center. You should seriously go here. They have Musk Ox, again, which are awesome.
6. This is also one of the best jump off points scenic flights or sea plane adventures, including a trip over to Katmai National Park: Home of the famous brooks falls for brown bear viewing. Maybe you can get a shot of a fish going into a bears mouth. We didn’t.
7. The Alaska Railroad comes down here for a reason. It’s a beautiful trainride which we didn’t take ourselves, but we saw them next to us on the road pretty often. The road was beautiful drive therefore the train must be a beautiful ride. Also, online reviews say its awesome.
8. Whether you're hoping to explore mountains or ocean, from the coastal rain forests around Seward and Kodiak to the rough Arctic chill of glaciers flowing off the Harding Icefield—there’s a huge range of diversity here.

----------------

ABOUT US:
We’re traveling full time, living on our own terms and showing you the up-close-and-personal details of us figuring it out along the way. Sometimes it’s about navigating big, life-altering decisions. Sometimes it’s about navigating the seemingly lawless free-for-all that is driving in Hanoi. It’s moments of triumph and moments of panic. The good, the bad, the ugly – and most importantly, the real and real funny.

We’re not here to tell you “how it’s done.” Just how we’ve done it. And that whatever it is that’s calling you - the way you’ll do it is much more attainable than it may seem. We believe the world’s a more interesting place when people reject convention in favor of what they actually care about. This is us putting that idea to the test – one budget spreadsheet, RV renovation and mountain-peak drone video at a time.

The Alaska Highway is one of the best road trips in North America. The route travels 1,400 miles through British Columbia, the Yukon and Alaska. Juneau, Alaska Solo Trip (With Pictures!) | Covid Travel | Story Time

Check out the blog!

DAY 1 Preview:
Flights to Juneau from Seattle were only $200 round trip! Thanks covid! ???? Extra bonus, the plane was socially distanced. I know it’s not feasible for airlines to continue this way, but I enjoyed the extra room and wished covid travel was here to stay - without the covid part, of course.

Thankfully, I did my research, because they were serious about covid testing as soon as you landed. I had my test within 72 hours of arrival, so, I was able to breeze through the line like a travel boss while everyone else was held hostage at the airport.

After getting settled into my Airbnb, I decided to take a stroll to get a lay of the land and find some...

DAY 2 Preview:

There's snow place like winter in Juneau, Alaska

Get to know winter in Juneau. Diverse terrain, abundant snow, and breathtaking scenery make Alaska’s capital winter’s best-kept secret. Eaglecrest Ski Area offers 640 acres of groomed trails, extensive backcountry, and panoramic views. Mellower thrills await snowshoers and Nordic skiers on Juneau’s extensive trail system—or blaze your own path. At day’s end, come in from the cold at one of Juneau’s many restaurants, bars, and cafes. Experience Alaska winter in a part of Alaska that’s closer, warmer and lighter than you think: two-and-a-half hours from Seattle, with average temperatures in the 20s and 30s, and even at its darkest, six-and-half hours of daylight. The best part? Great deals and no crowds. So get to know winter in Juneau… before everyone else does.

Alaska Cruise Vlog - Day 5 Juneau

Special thanks to Alaska Travel Adventures for hosting our family on today's amazing tour!

Hi Cruisers, It's day 5 of our Princess Alaska cruise, and today is going to be one of our most anticipated stops on our Alaska cruise. Be sure to visit our wonderful sponsor, CruiseLine.com:
Today we are in Juneau Alaska, and we've planned an action packed day. Our goal is to see how much our little family of three can do in a single day in Juneau. Thanks to the help of Travel Juneau and Alaska Travel Adventures, we are in for some crazy fun. Our plan is to start the day visiting Mendenhall Glacier, and maybe take a little hike to Nugget Falls. Then we are off on an exciting whale watching excursion. Whale watching is an absolute must if you are visiting Alaska. Next up is a Gold Creek Salmon Bake. There's food, fun, music, and even roasting marshmallows. The Gold Creek Salmon Bake is in a gorgeous area. It is not really that far from town, but it is so lush, green and beautiful that it feels like it is very far away. After a delicious meal, and great music we are headed back to port to see if we can catch the Mount Robert's Tram and do a little hiking. I also really want to do some shopping in port. Will we have time to catch the tram and do some shopping? Will we have to settle for just Mendenhall Glacier and Salmon Bake, or can we do the Mendenhall Glacier hike, the whale watching excursion, the Gold Creek Salmon Bake, and Mount Robert's Tramway? Whatever happens, it's gonna be cool!

Be sure to check back to watch all of our vlogs. We've got this Juneau vlog, Ketchikan, with all the bears, and a couple of sea day vlogs are already done. Skagway is coming, and of course we can't forget Tea Time in Victoria.
