Discover the Nakasendo Trail, Japan

Winding through the mountains of central Japan is an ancient walking route: the Nakasendō, or Central Mountain Road. Walking or cycling part of this 332-mile (534km) route connecting Kyoto and Tokyo gives you a glimpse of an older Japan...

Solo Hike on the Nakasendo Trail | Japan's Legendary Trail from Kyoto to Tokyo | 中山道

Join me on this solo adventure along the Nakasendo Trail (中山道)! Though off the beaten path from Japan's typical tourist destinations, if you like the outdoors/nature/hiking, this trail is something you have to visit!

For a full blog post on this hike plus FREE downloads of trail maps and guidebooks, see here:

00:00 Nakasendo Intro

03:35 Tsumago Post Town
09:37 Odaki & Medaki Waterfalls
15:15 Magome Post Town
16:20 Guest House Motomiya
19:10 Stone Pavement of Ochiai
21:09 Ochiai Post Town
21:57 Nakatsugawa Station

In the Edo period, the Nakasendo was one of the few walking routes that connected Edo (Tokyo) and Kyoto. At that time there were 69 post towns scattered along the way for travelers to rest. On my journey, I stopped by two of the most preserved ones: Tsumago and Magome!

While you can walk the 12-mile portion I walked (Nagiso Station to Nakatsugawa Station) in one day, I highly recommend staying overnight in Magome. The guest houses in the post towns are used to passing travelers and serve wonderful dinners and breakfasts to help replenish your energy. It's a great way to experience traditional Japan!

Guest House Motomiya:

My luck with the weather was less than optimal, but that didn't take away from the beautiful scenery one bit. I hope you enjoy this video and please be sure to like and subscribe!

Boundless Journeys' Japan: Hiking The Nakasendo Trail

Learn more:

The Nakasendo trail is a historic inn-to-inn walking route that linked Kyoto to Tokyo during Japan’s feudal period. It was the ‘road through the mountains’ (as opposed to the Tokaido route which traveled the Pacific coast) traveled by feudal lords and their retinues, samurai, merchants, and travelers. Along the route were 69 ‘post towns’, where weary travelers could rest before continuing on the next leg. Our journey will start in Kyoto and spend a few days walking along the Nakasendo. By day we will walk along the ancient route as it passes through beautifully-preserved villages along an easy path, and by evening we will stay in traditional country inns enjoying exquisite regional cuisine prepared from the freshest ingredients, soak in natural hot springs, and enjoy the warm hospitality of our hosts. We’ll also tour historic Kyoto and modern Tokyo and take part in a traditional tea ceremony and sake tasting.

- ABOUT US -
Hi! We are Pooja & Shravan, an illustrator-engineer duo from Bangalore brought together by the love of travel and adventure.

We have traveled together since the winter of 2016. On one such trip, we started documenting these travels on a humble phone camera. We soon realised that we really enjoy capturing these experiences. We are entirely self taught (students of the internet) and have learnt from binging on brilliant creators over the years.

In our videos you might find glimpses of places that are not spoken about enough. We always vouch for spots that are somewhat the underdogs. Our vlogs are sometimes vlog-ish and sometimes a documentation of the place as we see it. We hope that watching these videos will bring a little dose of joy to your day.

We love reading your comments and hearing your thoughts.
They motivate us and help us steer our creative path.

With love,

What to do in Japan in Winter

I spent a week traveling around central Japan, and here are some things you can do in Nagano Prefecture in the winter!

In part 1 of my Japan winter series, I visited the beautiful mountains in Chino and Komagane city in Nagano.

The views at the top of Mt. Kurumayama and Senjojiki Cirque were breathtaking and best of all you can get to the top easily by a ski lift or cable car.
For those who want more of a workout, it's a great starting place to hike to the other mountains in the Japan alps!

Stay tuned for part 2 where I share with you what you can do around the city and a hidden gem in Nagano!
