The Road to Mount Popa and Taung Kalat - Myanmar (Burma) - Minivan Tour

Mount Popa is considered the abode of Burma's most powerful Nats and as such is the most important Nat worship centre. It has therefore been called Burma's Mount Olympus.

Taung Kalat is a Buddhist monastery and temple complex located on Mount Popa.

Burmese superstition says that on Mount Popa, one should not wear red or black or green or bring meat, especially pork, as it could offend the resident Nats

The monastery is known for being home to 37 Nats, represented by statues, all wearing very colourful clothing.

We set off from Yangon on the start of our 14 day minivan tour heading to Bagan , Mandalay and Inle Lake. This is some of the sights on our drive and our stop at Mount Popa and the Buddhist monastery, Taung Kalat which is approx 6 hours drive or 300km from Pyay.

The minivan and driver hire was incredibly cheap. A highly recommended method of traveling around Myanmar. We booked our driver from the Sule Pagoda area.

At the time of travel, 2005, there was only 1 cashpoint machine in Yangon, which was hugely expensive. Travellers cheques couldn't be cashed anywhere except the Traders Hotel - Yangon, again, very expensive. Literally all of our money had to be in cash (US Dollars) for the whole trip.

We had no Smart phones, they weren't even a thing then, no Facebook or other social media, no internet access at our finger tips like we have today. If we found an internet cafe, we had email, that's it.
All of our planning was done with Lonely Planet guide books and from other travellers we exchanged information with along the way, we would also exchange Guide books!

In the Burmese language, Myanmar is simply the more formal version of Burma. The country’s name was changed only in English. During our stay in 2005 we avoided staying at or using any facilities or attractions connected to the military generals or their families.

Inle Lake Tour | Wonders of MYANMAR

A beautiful, natural, peaceful lake so many visitors come to enjoy. Inle Lake was one of our Myanmar highlights as well. Yes, we say that a lot – guilty! We decided to take it easy towards the end of our trip so we planned to spend 3 days around the lake, enjoying the laid back life and exploring the nearby places. There are many restaurants and Spa’s in the city so Inle Lake is the perfect place to slow it down a bit.

Ultimate Guide to Bagan Myanmar

Bagan in Myanmar (Burma) is one of the most beautiful places on the earth. An Ancient city in central Myanmar with more than 2000 Buddhist temples, Bagan should be on the list for all adventurers in South East Asia.

Here are some helpful tips for enjoying your time traveling in Bagan Myanmar.

Myanmar's INCREDIBLE INLE LAKE! | 12 Things to do by BOAT and BIKE ????????

Inle Lake is a must see sight for any trip to Myanmar, made famous by it’s incredible floating villages and leg rowing fisherman... But there are so many more incredible things to do: including hidden gems like a vineyard, hot springs and a tofu village! In this travel guide, we will cover it all.

Whether you explore by boat tour or bike tour, these are the things you have to see!

0:41 - Taking a LONGBOAT TOUR at SUNRISE
We booked a tour through our hotel (every hotel around the lake will do this for you, no need to book in advance). Sunrise is really worth it to avoid the crowds and see the lake in it’s best light.

2:10 - Floating Villages on Inle Lake
Inle is home to the Intha people who live and work in stilted bamboo houses on the water,

2:55 - Silversmith
Our first stop on the lake.

3:15 - Inle Lake Rotating Market
A market that moves around the lake every day. A good spot for souvenirs.

3:35 - Traditional Lotus Weaving Workshop.
A really interesting stop on our boat tour, there are a lot of products for sale too.

4:00 - Cigar Makers
Another good stop, well worth a try too - no tobacco, only natural ingredients!

4:12 - Shwe Indein and Indein Village
My favourite stop on the boat trip. The temples are ruined making it a great place to explore.

5:45 - Renting a bike in Nyaungshwe
The main tourist town of Inle is the best place to stay and rent a bike from. There are loads of different routes to take too.

6:13 - Khuang Daing Nature Hot Spring
A small spa with natural thermal springs. A great place to relax!

6:57 - Great Viewpoint over the Lake
Right opposite the hot springs is a really good viewpoint and small temple.

7:23 - Khuang Daing aka Tofu Village
Take a tour with Yam around the many different food spots in the village, most involve tofu - but not like any you’ve had before!

8:20 - Red Mountain Estate Vineyard
Inle Lake’s winery and vineyard is not only a great place to taste some local wine, but it also has some of the best views of the countryside. Perfect for sunset.

Good Time in Nyaung Shwe, Myanmar

Myanmar is still in its early stages of tourism and therefore internal travel takes sometime and effort. Getting from Bagan to Nyaung Shwe (about 350km or 220 miles) we were able to meet another couple staying at our hotel and coordinate sharing a van with a driver. This worked out well, allowing us to stop when we wanted along the way.

Set among the mountains of the nation's Shan State, Nyaung Shwe is best known for being the gateway to Inle Lake (a future video will cover the lake). We found the town and its people to be very pleasing, being quite rustic with a small-town feel. Being at a higher elevation than Mandalay and Bagan, the weather in Nyaung Shwe was much cooler and we loved it! Our hotel included a bike for each of us in order to explore the downtown and the surrounding countryside.

We found the “Shan Style” food to be fantastic and one restaurant was our favorite, right off the main street called “Sin Yaw. The owner Sao Thet Nanda OO, his wife and all the employees made us feel at home each time we visited.

Now sit back and enjoy our “Good time in Nyaung Shwe” video tour.

Inle je významné svou endemickou faunou, do které mimo jiné patří ryby Sawbwa resplendens, Microrasbora erythromicron a Inlecypris auropurpurea. Ekologickém problémem jezera je rozšíření invazivní rostliny tokozelka vodní hyacint a eroze způsobená odlesňováním okolních kopců. Roku 2015 zařadilo UNESCO jezero Inle do programu Člověk a biosféra. Jezero s okolím patří k nejvýznamnějším turistickým atrakcím země.

Myanmar Sightseeing in and around Inle Lake and Nyuangshwe town

My first day in the Inle Lake region of Myanmar, Burma. I arrived on the night bus from Bagan and start the day under a blanket in the lobby of the Princess Garden Hotel in Nyuangshwe waiting for my hotel room to be ready.

Breakfast is served at the Princess Garden Hotel so I tuck in while I wait for my hotel room, and then I set to organising my sightseeing at Inle Lake. First I visit a Buddhist temple in Myuangshwe, then I organise a sunset boat trip out onto the lake, and a days sightseeing on Inle lake for the tomorrow.

I have had a wonderful time so far in Myanmar,

Inle Lake - Into The Heart Of Myanmar

Inle lake is a must-visit destination in Myanmar.
We did a Boat trip, we were so impressed by the life on the lake, by the villages that look like ordinary ones - with school, post office, cafes, except of water canals instead of roads and all houses on stilts.

Highlights of an Inle Lake boat tour

See lotus weaving, boat making, cheroot cigar making, a silver smith workshop, Inthein Village and Pagoda, a floating restaurant, Nga Hpe Chaung Monastery (AKA the Jumping Cat Monastery), Phaung Daw Oo Pagoda, a novice monk ceremony (a lucky invite for us) and floating gardens.

Boat tours on Inle Lake are the most popular activity in Nyaungshwe, Shan State, Myanmar. It only costs about $15 a day for a full day boat tour, including a driver and an English-speaking guide (excluding tips).

Out on the water, you'll be able to see the famed leg rowing fishermen too. See this video to meet some of them and learn more about their everyday lives out on the lake:
