1996 Epcot Space Pavilion Concept Part One

George explores a rare concept proposal for a Space Pavilion at Epcot from 1996.

You won’t believe this concept art for the proposed Space Pavilion at Epcot set to debut in 1999. Including a brand-new ride vehicle called The Speculator!

Hello everyone, I’m George Taylor from Imaginerding. Subscribe to my channel to get updates when I release new videos about Disney history, Disney books, and amusement park histories.

Mission: Space, which opened on October 9, 2003, sits on the spot of the former Horizons attraction. Horizon opened on October 1, 1983, a year after EPCOT Center opened. The much loved attraction, which always seem to the be the real heart of Future World and the attraction that encapsulated all of the idea of EPCOT, closed in December, 1994, and reopened a year later to help with the crowds while the Universe of Energy and the World of Motion were being refurbished. Horizon finally closed on January 9, 1999. The entire attraction was dismantled and demolished for the future Mission: Space.

Since the beginning of EPCOT Center planning, there was always a plan for a Space Pavilion. Due to the size and scope of the planned Space Pavilion, it, uh, never really got off the ground.

Still, that doesn’t mean that Disney wasn’t always planning for a Space Pavilion or a replacement for Horizon.

I ran across a 1996 concept plan for a space attraction that would re-use the Horizons building and much of the ride layout. This 26-page book shows a themed attraction in the vein of the great Epcot attractions like the original Living Seas and the World of Motion. Let’s take a look at the this 1996 concept.

Looking at the cover, it s very reminiscent of the mural at the entrance to Space ship Earth and the long lost Horizons Mural. The bottom of the image shows our past and what we thought of and how we discovered space. As we move up the image, we see science-based and actual depictions of space exploration. On the right are the guests and they are leaning towards the center of the image and the words: EPCOT Space: A journey to Imagined Realities.

Tibetan Wives Can Be Shared Between Brothers - Tibet Documentary

A land enshrouded in spirituality, Tibet is home to distinct cultural traditions and astounding natural scenery. Cradled amidst the towering peaks of the Himalayas, Tibet is a region where the sky seems to embrace the earth. In this journey, we'll explore deep into the heart of Tibet, unveiling a world where ancient traditions thrive and where the lives of its people are as captivating as the landscape they inhabit.

Amidst this cultural mosaic, we encounter practices as intriguing as it is uncommon – fraternal polyandry. A practice in which one woman can marry two or more siblings simultaneously, most commonly brothers. This unique marital arrangement, rooted in economic necessity and social tradition, forms a complex yet fascinating facet of Tibetan society. It challenges our understanding of family structures and invites us to explore the intricate balance between survival, culture, and the preservation of heritage in this magnificent land.

Join us as we journey into the life of the urban Tibetans, who weave the threads of tradition with the sinews of modernity. Through the lives of the nomadic Drokpa, herders of the high plateau whose tents dot the vast expanse like stars in the night sky. We'll delve into the agrarian rhythms of the Tibetan Agriculturalists, custodians of the fertile valleys where barley and wheat sway in the mountain breeze. We'll also journey into the serene Buddhist monasteries of the Tibetan monks, diving into a world of spiritual pursuit and ancient wisdom.

By retrieving a sample of Bennu, OSIRIS-REx will teach us more about the raw ingredients of the solar system and our own origins.
The animation was produced in an 8 x 3 aspect ratio at a resolution of 5760 x 2160 and is available in its full resolution, 4K Ultra HD, 1080HD and 720HD versions in letterboxed format.

1996 Epcot Space Pavilion Part Two: Enter The Speculator!

George shares Part Two of his video covering the proposed concept for a Space Pavilion at EPCOT in 1996. In the second part of the video, we experience the Digital Imaging Center and get take a ride on the Speculator, a new attraction experience that has ties to Soarin' and flight of the Banshee.

Part One of the video is here:

In the 1990s, General Electric dropped their sponsorship of Horizons. Disney couldn't find another sponsor for the Horizons attraction and embarked on a journey to create a new experience and attract a new sponsorship partner.

This concept for a Space Pavilion would have straddled pre- and post-millennium Epcot with an attraction that, well, had the best of both worlds. The first segment, which would have retained a major portion of the original attraction layout showed us how we saw space throughout our history. It would have been a bit slower, like World of Motion and Spaceship Earth, as it explained how we came to understand outer space. The second half of the attraction took us into another pre-show and debuted a fairly new style of vehicle that would have been a cross between Soarin' and Flight of Passage. Sort of...
