Jordan River

Recorded October 28, 2009.

The Jordan River or River Jordan flows into the Dead Sea. It is considered to be one of the world's most sacred rivers. It is 156 miles long. The river drops rapidly in a 75 kilometer run to swampy Lake Hula, which is slightly above sea level. Exiting the lake, it drops much more in about 25 kilometers to the Sea of Galilee. The last section has less gradient, and the river begins to meander before it enters the Dead Sea, which is about 400 metres below sea level and has no outlet. Two major tributaries enter from the east during this last phase: the Yarmouk River and Jabbok River. Its section north of the Sea of Galilee within the boundaries of Israel, and forms the western boundary of the Golan Heights. South of the lake, it forms the border between the Kingdom of Jordan (to the east) and Israel and the West Bank (to the west).

Jordan River Crossing Miracle into Promised Land, Baptismal Site of Jesus, Qsar al Yahud, Jericho

This miracle was much, much bigger than we think. This video shows amazing facts that you most likely didn't know. What you'll see will drastically change your perception of how big this miracle really was. You'll also see other important sites in this area.

BOOKS ABOUT ISRAEL BY TODD FINK:

Location
1. The crossing place where the Israelites entered the Promised Land is just opposite Jericho.
2. It’s amazing that it’s in the same area where John the Baptist baptized many, and where John baptized Jesus.
3. Today, it’s known as Qasr el Yahud (Kasser Al Yahud, Qaser, the Baptismal Site of Jesus.
4. It’s about 2 miles (3.3 km.) east from Hwy. 90, opposite Jericho.

Historical Background
1. The nation of Israel spent 430 years in Egypt. Four hundred of these years they were slaves (Gen. 15:13), and thirty years they enjoyed peace during the time Joseph was alive.
2. God supernaturally delivered the Israelites out of the hands of the Egyptians through Moses.
3. After the Exodus, they crossed the Red Sea on dry ground.
4. They spent a year at Mount Sinai receiving the Law and then headed to Kadesh Barnea to enter the Promised Land.
5. After the 12 spies returned from scouting out the land, 10 spies convinced the people that the inhabitants of the land were too strong for them to conquer and they should return to Egypt (Num. 13:25–33).
6. Because of their unbelief and disobedience, they were banned from entering the Promised Land and ordered to wander in the desert 40 years until every person 20 years old, and older, died (Num. 14:20–25).
7. During the 40 years of wandering in the desert, entering the Promised Land became a deep yearning within the souls of the new generation. Day after day they dreamt about a new life in the Promised Land, which would bring an end to their seemingly vain wandering in the desert eating Manna day after day.
8. After 40 long years, they were poised to enter the Promised Land, and their hearts were overflowing with enthusiasm and expectation as the time had finally arrived.
9. The word “Hebrew” means to cross over. Abraham crossed over from false gods to the one and only true God. He crossed over physically by leaving his homeland and coming to the Promised Land. The Israelites were delivered from the Egyptians as they crossed through the Red Sea and then crossed through the Jordan River into the Promised Land. All these acts are pictures of deliverance and salvation. We also cross over from death to life through Christ.

Places of Interest
1. Crossing site of the Israelites into the Promised Land.
2. Baptismal Site of Jesus (Qsar al Yahud): The believed place where Jesus was baptized and where many are baptized today.

BOOKS ABOUT ISRAEL BY TODD FINK:

Location
1. The Jordan River begins at Mount Hermon in the northernmost part of Israel, and flows into the Sea of Galilee, and then out and down to the Dead Sea.
2. The lower part of the river has the lowest elevation of any river in the world.
3. It’s the border between Israel and Jordan for much if its length.
4. Today, because of the high demands of water by both Israel and Jordan, little water makes it to the Dead Sea area.
Historical Background
1. The Jordan River is mentioned over 180 times in the Bible.
2. It is the main River in Israel, supplying much of the country with water.
3. Its total winding length is about 125 miles (200 km.).
4. The meaning of “Jordan” in Hebrew is “descend.” This is true of the Jordan River as it literally descends thousands of feet from its inception to its ending, and all but the beginning part is below sea level.
5. However, there’s a deeper spiritual meaning to the word. In the same way we must descend to access the Jordan River’s waters, spiritually we must descend and humble ourselves before we can ascend spiritually. This concept is seen in many of the miracles that happened in and around its shores.
Places of Interest
1. Mount Hermon: Rises to around 9,232 ft. (2,813 m.) above sea level and supplies the Jordan River with most of its water.
2. Hermon Stream Nature Reserve: Beginning area of the Jordan River.
3. Jordan River View: Nice viewing place where the river is wide and calm.
4. Sea of Galilee: The Jordan River flows into and out of the Sea of Galilee.
5. Yardenit Baptismal Site: Located just south of the Sea of Galilee. It’s a popular place where many pilgrims get baptized in the Jordan River.
6. Adam – Place the waters of the Jordan backed up to when the Israelites crossed the river (20 miles, 32 km. above crossing).
7. Baptismal Site of Jesus: Located across from Jericho, this is the believed place where Jesus was baptized. It’s also a popular place where many people get baptized today as well.
8. Crossing of the Jordan River by the Israelites: Located close-by to the Baptismal Site of Jesus.

Jordan River and Dead Sea, Jordan Side ||Jordan||

The Jordan River or River Jordan (Arabic: نَهْر الْأُرْدُنّ‎, Nahr al-Urdunn, Hebrew: נְהַר הַיַּרְדֵּן‎, Nahar ha-Yarden; Classical Syriac: ܢܗܪܐ ܕܝܘܪܕܢܢ‎), also known as Nahr Al Sharieat (Arabic: نهر الشريعة‎), is a 251-kilometre-long (156 mi) river in the Middle East that flows roughly north to south through the Sea of Galilee (Hebrew: כנרת Kinneret, Arabic: Bohayrat Tabaraya, meaning Lake of Tiberias) and on to the Dead Sea. Jordan and the Golan Heights border the river to the east, while the West Bank and Israel lie to its west. Both Jordan and the West Bank take their names from the river.

The Dead Sea (Hebrew: יָם הַמֶּלַח About this soundYam ha-Melah lit. Sea of Salt; Arabic: البحر الميت‎ About this soundAl-Bahr al-Mayyit[5] or Buhayrat,[6][7] Bahret or Birket Lut,[6] lit. Lake/Sea of Lot) is a salt lake bordered by Jordan to the east and Israel and the West Bank to the west. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River.

Its surface and shores are 430.5 metres (1,412 ft) below sea level,[4][8] Earth's lowest elevation on land. It is 304 m (997 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With a salinity of 342 g/kg, or 34.2% (in 2011), it is one of the world's saltiest bodies of water[9] – 9.6 times as salty as the ocean – and has a density of 1.24 kg/litre, which makes swimming similar to floating.[10][11] This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which plants and animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea's main, northern basin is 50 kilometres (31 mi) long and 15 kilometres (9 mi) wide at its widest point. ????Music in video: ????

Qasr al-Yehud (Castle of the Jews) is a baptismal location on the Jordan River. The site is in the Palestinian Authority of the West Bank 15 km from the northern end of the Dead Sea and southeast of Jericho. Qasr Al-Yehud is believed to be the Biblical site where John baptized Jesus; this symbolized his spiritual birth.

This stretch of the river is also where Joshua led the Israelites to cross the River Jordan into the Promised Land. The Prophet Elijah is said to have ascended to heaven from this location. The area covers both banks of the Jordan River – on the east bank in the Kingdom of Jordan and on the west bank at Qasr al-Yehud.

Visiting Qasr al-Yehud
Qasr al-Yehud was closed to visitors from 1967 to 1994 when the area was a no man’s land. Following the peace agreement between Jordan and Israel the site was reopened in 2011 and restored. It is now accessible to visitors with the addition of handrails and steps leading down into the water.

Several churches have been built near Qasr al-Yehud over the years beginning in the Byzantine era but only ruins have survived. Two new outdoor chapels are now used by visiting Christians of all denominations. Special celebrations take place here on January 6th for the Feast of Epiphany by the Western Churches; January 19th for the Theophany by Eastern Orthodox Churches and during the Easter weekend.

Two Baptismal Sites of the Jordan River
You may have heard of an alternate baptismal site called Yardenit, located in northern Israel near the southern end of the Sea of Galilee. Yardenit is also on the Jordan River and was created as an alternative site for Christian pilgrims who wanted to be baptized in the Jordan but could not reach Qasr al-Yahud due to logistic and security obstacles. Qasr e-Yahud is closer to the geographical location described in the Bible as Jesus’ baptismal site but Yardenit is a good alternative when it is not possible to reach Qasr al-Yahud.

Livestream:

Divine Liturgy for the 1st and 2nd Finding of the Head of John the Forerunner and Baptist with Parastas, February, 24, 2024

The first and second findings of the head of the Prophet, Forerunner, and Baptist John. Tradition tells us that the first finding was by two monks, in the palace of Herod the King. They brought the relic to the city of Emmesia. The second finding was much later, during the reign of the emperor Marcianus.

The glorious Prophet and Forerunner John the Baptist is also referred to as John the Forerunner because he was the forerunner of Christ. He was an ascetic and great prophet, who baptized Christ and became one of the most revered saints in the Orthodox Church. John is a cousin of Christ through his mother Elizabeth who was the daughter of Zoia. Zoia is the sister of Christ's grandmother. He was later beheaded by Herod in the first century to satisfy the request of Herod's stepdaughter, Salome, and wife Herodias. Because he baptized Christ, he is the patron saint of godparents. He is sometimes called the Angel of the Desert; because of this title, he is sometimes depicted with wings.

Isaiah 40:3-5 is commonly read as a prophecy of John. His father, Zacharias, was a priest of the course of Abia (1 Chr. 24:10), and his mother, Elizabeth, was of the daughters of Aaron (Luke 1:5). John held the priesthood of Aaron, giving him the authority to perform baptisms of God.

His birth took place six months before that of Jesus, and according to the Gospel account was expected by prophecy (Matt. 3:3; Isa. 40:3; Mal. 3:1) and foretold by an angel. Zacharias lost his power of speech because of his unbelief over the birth of his son, and had it restored on the occasion of John's circumcision (Luke 1:64).

As an adult John started to preach in public, and people from every quarter were attracted to his message. The essence of his preaching was the necessity of repentance and turning away from selfish pursuits. He denounced the Sadducees and Pharisees as a generation of vipers, and warned them not to assume their heritage gave them special privilege (Luke 3:8). He warned tax collectors and soldiers against extortion and plunder. His doctrine and manner of life stirred interest, bringing people from all parts to see him on the banks of the Jordan River. There he baptized thousands unto repentance.

The fame of John reached the ears of Jesus in Nazareth (Matt. 3:5), and he came from Galilee to Jordan to be baptized by John, on the special ground that it became him to fulfill all righteousness (Matt. 3:15). John's special office ceased with the baptism of Jesus, who must now increase as the King come to his kingdom. He continued, however, for a while to bear testimony to the Messiahship of Jesus. He pointed him out to his disciples, saying, Behold the Lamb of God. His public ministry was suddenly (after about six months probably) brought to a close by his being cast into prison by Herod, whom he had reproved for the sin of having taken to himself the wife of his brother Philip (Luke 3:19). He was shut up in the castle of Machaerus, a fortress on the southern extremity of Peraea, 9 miles east of the Dead Sea, and here he was beheaded at the instigation of Herodias; later tradition also implicates Salomé. His disciples, having consigned the headless body to the grave, went and told Jesus all that had occurred (Matt. 14:3-12). John's death occurred apparently just before the third Passover of Jesus' ministry.

Jesus himself testified regarding John that he was a burning and a shining light (John 5:35). John was the last of the Old Testament prophets, thus serving as a bridge figure between that period of revelation and Jesus. They also embrace a tradition that, following his death, John descended into Hell and there once more preached that Jesus the Messiah was coming.

Bethsaida & Jordan River | Israel video tour

With David Hyman, professional tour guide. Bethsaida is mentioned in the New Testament as the hometown of three of the Apostles: Petre and his brother Andrew, and the apostle Phillip. The name of the town in Hebrew means the hose ( Beth) of hunting ( Saida) and might refer to the fishing economy of the inhabitants of the region. For many years the site was not accessible as it was on the border between Israel and Syria, but after 1967 during a survey, the site was identified as Bethsaida when dwelling s and artic]facts from the 1st century were uncovered. Under the 1st century layer, the excavations revealed many walls, fortifications, and an enormous city gate, all dating back to the 10th century BCE. The scholars agree that the town could be identified as the Biblical town of Geshur, home town of Talmai King of Geshur and his daughter Maacha. Maacha is mentioned as one of King David's wives. Maacha and King David had a son Avshalom - who later rebelled against his father David. The site is within the Jordan River Park, which is a popular picnic and hiking site during the summer season. It is possible to choose one of the hiking trails in the park and advance as close as possible to the Jordan River, at the section just before it enters into the Sea of Galilee.

Zahi Shaked A tour guide in Israel and his camera zahigo25@walla.com +972-54-6905522 tel סיור עם מורה הדרך ומדריך הטיולים צחי שקד 0546905522
My name is Zahi Shaked
In 2000 I became a registered liscenced tourist guide.
My dedication in life is to pass on the ancient history of the Holy Land.

Following upon many years of travel around the world, which was highlighted by a very exciting emotional and soul-searching meeting with the Dalai Lama, I realized that I had a mission. To pass on the the history of the Holy Land, its religions, and in particular, the birth and development of Christianity.

In order to fulfill this calling in the best way possible, I studied in depth, visited, and personally experienced each and every important site of the ancient Christians. I studied for and received my first bachelors degree in the ancient history of the Holy Land, and am presently completing my studies for my second degree.(Masters)

Parralel to my studies, and in order to earn a living, I was employed for many years in advertising. What I learned there was how to attract the publics attention, generate and, increase interest, and assimilate information. All this I use as tools to describe, explain and deepen the interest in the sites that we visit. From my experience, I have learned that in this way, the Holy Land becomes more than just history, and that the large stones that we see scattered about in dissaray, join together one by one until they become - a Byzantine Church. This also happens when I lead a group of Pilgrims in the Steps of Jesus. We climb to the peak of Mount Precipice, glide over the land to the Sea of Galilee, land on the water and see the miracle which enfolds before us. This is a many faceted experience. Not only history which you will remember and cherish, but an experience which I hope will be inplanted in your hearts and minds, and will accompany you all the days of your life.

JORDAN RIVER: You are my son! - Holy Scriptures, Holy Places

The Holy Land and its Holy Places constitute a Fifth Gospel, deepening the understanding of who Jesus is, how the Old Testament prepared the people to welcome him and how He calls us in the New Testament to follow him. Come with us to the Jordan River.

“We come here to the Jordan not only to be cured of our leprosy; not only to be free of our sins, but to be born again together with Jesus for we too desire to hear those words “YOU ARE MY SON, YOU ARE MY DAUGHTER in you I am well pleased”.

“In those days Jesus came from Nazareth of Galilee and was baptised by John in the Jordan. And when he came up out of the water, immediately he saw the heavens being torn open and the Spirit descending on him like a dove. And a voice came from heaven, “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well pleased.” Mark 1:9-11
