While the battlements of ancient fortresses standing on shore are occasional reminders of the region’s violent past, he is able to contemplate that era from the relative peace of the wide river.

The King of the Nile - The Shilluk (Nilotic Tribe Documentary) | TRACKS
We closely follow a change of throne in the Shilluk kingdom in this documentary.
The Shilluk are Nilotic people living along the Nile in Sudan. According to local history, their kingdom was founded in the 16th century by Nyikang who united the various groups living in the area. The Shilluk dynasty rules from the royal capital Pashoda and when there's a change of throne, the tradition requires specific acts where everyone in the tribe participates.
The documentary series “Disappearing World” was originally broadcasted between 1970-1975.
As an anthropological landmark of its time, the series tells the story of traditional communities endangered by the modern world’s progressions.
The series stands as a historical document of daily life in remote and threatened societies, such as the Cuiva, Embera and Panare Indians of Colombia, the nomadic Tuareg of the Sahara, the Kurdish Dervishes and the Meo of China.

The actress recalls her journey around mainland Greece. She begins in Athens with a trip to the Parthenon, a temple to the goddess Athena built nearly 2,500 years ago. Joanna also visits a festival where fortunes are read out to large crowds, although the revelations are often quite shocking and rude, watches the singer Nana Mouskouri perform at the ancient Epidaurus theatre and ends her trip with a visit to the mountain monasteries of Meteora.
Joanna Lumley's Postcards - The Greek Islands (Travel Documentary)
The actress recalls her journey across the Greek islands. She starts out on the island of Evia, where she engages in an ancient language of whistling with the local people, and on Kos she visits the birthplace of Hippocrates, the father of modern medicine. Travelling to Nysros she carefully climbs a slumbering volcano, before setting sail for Crete, where she spends time in the mountains with shepherds and learns how their ancestors played a key role in the fight against Nazi occupation.

Joanna’s journey takes her from train to boat and huskysled to snowmobile as she is pulled ever northwards and finally, in a breathtaking climax to the film, Joanna gets to see with her own eyes the spectacular beauty of the Northern Lights. She learns how the waters at the source of the river in Uganda are believed to have powers of healing - and gets accidentally baptised. Joanna also goes on safari, where she encounters shoebills, hippos, rhinos and crocodiles, attends an early morning service at one of the many monasteries and samples the national dish.
