Jeddah City Tour - The Liberal Saudi Arabia? Middle East Travel جدة مدينة المملكة العربية السعودية

Welcome to Jeddah, the second largest city in Saudi Arabia. A more liberal and cosmopolitan city than other parts of the country?

I traveled here on the last leg of my journey and visited the stunning Unesco World Heritage Al Balad area, the bustling Central Fish Market, a modern shopping mall, and the beautiful Cornice stretching for kilometers along the Red Sea Coast. A personal tour through a fascinating city.

Saudi Arabia is mostly known in the ‘Western world’ for its petroleum export, the birthplace of Islam, and unfortunately also poor human rights record. But as I discover there is much more to this massive country than first meets the eye. Jeddah City Tour - The Liberal Saudi Arabia?

Saudi Arabia. Most of us heard about this country... but hardly anyone has actually visited it, spoken to the people, got to know their culture. Most of our understanding of the country and the people comes from the media.. and let's be honest, that covers only a tiny fraction of what this country is. So I wanted to find out more. What is it like to be a Saudi, what does a normal day look like.. and how will I be welcomed.

As always, please be respectful to the people who were so kind to let me (and also you!) in their lifes. This video is not about politics, it's about cultures and the wonderful people on this globe.

About Jeddah: Jeddah (English: /dʒɛdə/ JED-ə), also spelled Jedda, Jiddah or Jidda (/dʒɪdə/ JID-ə; Arabic: جِدَّة, romanized: Jidda, Hejazi pronunciation: dʒɪd.da), is a city in the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia and the countrys commercial center. With a population of about 4,697,000 people as of 2021, Jeddah is the largest city in Makkah Province, the largest city in Hejaz, the second-largest city in Saudi Arabia (after the capital Riyadh), and the tenth-largest in the Middle East. Jeddah Islamic Port, is on the Red Sea, is the thirty-sixth largest seaport in the world and the second-largest and second-busiest seaport in the Middle East (after Dubais Port of Jebel Ali). Jeddah is the principal gateway to Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, 65 kilometers (40 mi) to the east, while Medina, the second-holiest city, is 360 kilometers (220 mi) to the north. Economically, Jeddah is focusing on further developing capital investment in scientific and engineering leadership within Saudi Arabia, and the Middle East. Jeddah was independently ranked fourth in the Africa – Mid-East region in terms of innovation in 2009 in the Innovation Cities Index. Jeddah is one of Saudi Arabias primary resort cities and was named a Beta world city by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network (GaWC). Given the citys close proximity to the Red Sea, fishing and seafood dominate the food culture unlike other parts of the country. In Arabic, the citys motto is Jeddah Ghair, which translates to Jeddah is different. The motto has been widely used among both locals as well as foreign visitors. The city is widely perceived as the most liberal city in Saudi Arabia and is a popular tourist destination in the region. [Source: wikipedia // Google]

Saudi Arabia Travel - One Day in Riyadh ???????? المملكة العربية السعودية مدينة الرياض السفر سياحة أجنبي

Saudi Arabia has long been off limits to foreign tourists and travelers. Since a few months, however, it’s possible to visit the country on a tourist visa. I made use of this opportunity and traveled to Saudi Arabia for 2 weeks, including Riyadh, the Edge of the World, Jeddah, Medina, Al Ula, Umluj, and the Red Sea coast.

In this video I travel to Riyadh, the capital city in the center of the country. After visiting a mosque for Friday prayer and eating lunch with the locals, I tour to modern shopping malls, museums, traditional bazaars, a construction site with migrant workers, the famous Sky Bridge Kingdom Tower, and finally the Riyadh Season Festival, designed to promote tourism and culture. While I spent almost 3 days in Riyadh, I comprised the video to make it into one single day.

Medina as Non Muslim - Solo Travel in Saudi Arabia المدينة المنورة المملكة العربية السعودية أجنبي

Medina is the second holiest city in Islam after Mecca, and one of the most visited places in Saudi Arabia. As a non Muslim, it was unsure whether I could travel to the city center, reading conflicting reports beforehand. I decided to check for myself, and found that I was allowed to visit everywhere, except inside the main mosque, the Al Masjid an Nawabi.

Medina is known as the City of the Prophet, and considered the second holiest site in Islam after Mecca. This is where Islam’s main Prophet, Muhammad, lived and was eventually laid to rest. All able Muslims are supposed to make the journey to Medina and Mecca once in their life.

Jeddah Fish Market in Saudi Arabia جدة سمك سوق المملكة العربية السعودية

The Central Fish Market in Jeddah is a fascinating and busy place to visit. It has at least 50 species of sea creatures for sale, mostly from the Red Sea.

A lot of fish is supplied from all over the region, and is not just what’s being caught by local fishermen. It’s arguably best to visit the market in the morning when fresh fish is being brought in.

It’s mostly men that work and shop at the market, and many of the workers come from other countries like Bangladesh, India, and Egypt.

Middle East Travel - Tropical Paradise in Saudi Arabia? Umluj islands أملج المملكة العربية السعودية

Umluj is an island group on the tropical Red Sea coast in Saudi Arabia. It is known for its unspoiled islands and beautiful beaches. There are a total of 104 islands here, varying in size. Some people have nicknamed Umluj as the Maldives of Saudi Arabia. In this video, I travel to the islands with a local fisherman, and explore the islands from various angles.

SAUDI ARABIA Solo Travel | Jeddah is different! جدة ????????

#saudiarabia #jeddah #solotravel

Exploring Jeddah, my favourite city in Saudi Arabia. I discover this amazing city wandering through its Corniche, the traditional fish market and the wonderful UNESCO Heritage Site of Al Balad, the old historical centre where time seems to be stopped.

During centuries, Jeddah has served as the gateway for millions of pilgrims who have arrived in Saudi Arabia due to its proximity to both Makkah and Medina. With a population of about 4,697,000 people as of 2021, Jeddah is the largest city in Makkah Province, the largest city in Hejaz, the second-largest city in the Saudi Arabia (after the capital Riyadh), and the ninth-largest in the Middle East.

Jeddah is my fourth stop within my 10 days solo travel experience in Saudi Arabia, a country which opened to international tourism in 2019 only and it is is still partly misunderstood.

Exploring Jeddah, Saudi Arabia (city tour of the Corniche & Al Balad)

ABOUT THIS VIDEO
Today I explored my new home here in Jeddah جدة, Saudi Arabia, visiting the beautiful Corniche (Red Sea coastal path) during the day and then at night, and the stunning old city of Al Balad (a Unesco World Heritage site). I also visited some other places of interest along the way, such as Al Rahma Mosque (the floating mosque), the giant King Fahad’s Fountain and the tallest flagpole in the world.

We ate amazing vegan food at:
The Medd Cafe - vegan chia seed pudding and matcha latte.
Cafe Magad - We had the local tea with mint.
مطاعم فول فتاح - This is where I tried ful. We also ordered hummus, salad and bread. So yummy!
مقهى جداوي - We didn’t stop for very long in the video but I have since been back and I would recommend sitting on the roof terrace and having the arabic coffee with dates.

Saudi Arabia is nothing like I expected, I came here with an open mind and I continue to be so pleasantly surprised everyday. The people here have been so friendly and I feel totally safe. I am so grateful to have been greeted with nothing but the most incredible hospitality by each and every Saudi local I have met. Thank you to everyone who has been so kind and welcoming.

Today was amazing and i cant wait to show you more about how incredible this country is! Subscribe to follow my journey and to see what my days look like here. In my upcoming videos I will be exploring more restaurants, the beaches in Jeddah and I will being doing trips to Umluj and Al Ulah. There are so many magnificent gems here to explore, I can’t wait to show you!

A DAY IN JEDDAH CITY | SAUDI ARABIA

DescriptionJeddah, a Saudi Arabian port city on the Red Sea, is a modern commercial hub and gateway for pilgrimages to the Islamic holy cities Mecca and Medina. Resort hotels, beaches and outdoor sculptures line the Corniche, a seafront promenade anchored by the iconic King Fahd’s Fountain. The city’s Al-Balad historic district dates to the 7th century and retains traditional homes built from coral.

Exploring JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia. Middle East Travel

JEDDAH, Saudi Arabia. Middle East Travel. Jeddah is the second largest city in Saudi Arabia. It also spelled Jedda, Jiddah or Jidda is a city in the Hejaz region of Saudi Arabia and the country's commercial center. With a population of about four million people (as of 2017), Jeddah is the largest city in Makkah Province, the second-largest in Saudi Arabia (after the capital Riyadh), and the tenth-largest in the Arab world.Jeddah Islamic Port, located on the Red Sea, is the second-largest and second-busiest seaport in the Arab world (after Dubai's Port of Jebel Ali).
Jeddah is the principal gateway to Mecca, the holiest city in Islam, located just 65 kilometres (40 mi) to the east, while Medina, the second-holiest city, is located 360 kilometres (220 mi) to the north. Economically, Jeddah is focusing on further developing capital investment in scientific and engineering leadership within Saudi Arabia, and the Middle East. Jeddah is one of Saudi Arabia's primary resort cities and was named a Beta world city by the Globalization and World Cities Study Group and Network (GaWC). Given the city's close proximity to the Red Sea, fishing and seafood dominates the food culture unlike other parts of the country. Jeddah Tower (Arabic: برج جدة‎), previously known as Kingdom Tower (برج المملكة), is a stalled construction project of a skyscraper on the north side of Jeddah, Saudi Arabia. It is planned to be the world's first 1 km (3,281 ft) high building, and the centrepiece and first phase of a development and tourist attraction known as Jeddah Economic City. There was steady progress but in January 2018 building owner JEC halted structural concrete work with the tower about one-third completed due to labor issues with a contractor following the 2017–19 Saudi Arabian purge. JEC has said they plan to restart construction in 2020. The design, created by American architect Adrian Smith, who also designed the Burj Khalifa, incorporates many unique structural and aesthetic features. The creator and leader of the project is Saudi Arabian prince Al-Waleed bin Talal, a grandson of Ibn Saud, and nephew of the Kings of Saudi Arabia before him. Al-Waleed is the chairman of Kingdom Holding Company (KHC), which is a partner in the Jeddah Economic Company (JEC), which was formed in 2009 for the development of Jeddah Tower and City.
