Japanese Drinking Culture: Standing Bars, Kampai Etiquette, & Retro Drinks in Tokyo

Go bar-hopping with local guides in Japan:

Shizuka and Max chat about Japanese drinking culture while eating and drinking at izakayas (Japanese gastropubs) in Ueno and Asakusa.

First up is a “tachinomiya” (standing bar) in Ueno called Motsuyaki Otonba, which specializes in “horumon” (offal) dishes. Tachinomiya bars are great to stop by for a quick bite and a drink or two. Here, they try heart, beef tongue, liver, and “motsu nikomi” (stewed innards) and introduce “torizara” (personal plates used when sharing food among groups) and toasting etiquette.

Next, they visit Hoppy Dori (Hoppy Street) in Asakusa, Tokyo, and try the local beverage the area is named after. Hoppy is a beer substitute made from hops, with very low alcohol content (around 0.8%) and is often mixed with shochu (a Japanese distilled alcohol) to make it stronger. It was popularized after WWII at a time when beer was not affordable and Hoppy was more accessible. Today it’s still enjoyed as a retro beverage.

Featured foods/drinks:
1 - Heart skewer
2 - Beef tongue skewer
3 - Liver skewer
4 - Motsu nikomi
5 - White Hoppy
6 - Black Hoppy
7 - Otoshi (compulsory appetizer)
8 - Edamame
9 - Tonpeiyaki

TOKYO NIGHTLIFE GUIDE

Tokyo Nightlife Guide, 2017 - Let me take you around Tokyo, Japan and show you some of the best things to do in Tokyo at night!

As I mention in the Tokyo Nightlife Guide video, there are a million bars, nightclubs, and restaurants in Tokyo to choose from, so I wanted to break it down by popular nightlife neighborhoods in Tokyo to give you some ideas on things to do in Tokyo at night.

ROPPONGI - Known to be the most foreign-friendly nightlife neighborhood. Home to the Hard Rock Cafe and many other western bars, restaurants, and nightclubs. Some good nightlife areas around Roppongi include Azabujuban and Akasaka.

EBISU - A much more local environment than Roppongi, and home to the awesome Ebisu Yokocho, is Ebisu. My favorite nightlife area in Tokyo along with Nakameguro and Meguro nearby.

SHIBUYA - Famous for the Shibuya Crossing, Shibuya is where many of the biggest nightclubs in Tokyo are, but you can also find a million small, quiet, hidden Shibuya bars as well. Mega clubs like Whomb, Harlem, Club Camelot, Sound Museum Vision, Atom, are very big right now. Be sure to check online before visiting for specials, DJs, and cover charges.

SHINJUKU - Tokyo Red Light District is in Shinjuku, as is the popular Robot Restaurant, and Golden Gai. In all of Tokyo, you can probably find the most variety and options of Shinjuku bars than anywhere else.

ENJOY RESPONSIBLY! And please let me know in the comments if you have any recommendations, as I will add them to the Ultimate Tokyo Nightlife Guide on my travel blog:

Best TOKYO NIGHTLIFE Travel Guide 2024

TOKYO: Are you looking for the best Tokyo Nightlife? In this Tokyo Nightlife vlog we show you the best areas to hang out and party while in Japans largest city. Some of these tourist hotspots include Shinjuku Kabukicho, Shibuya, Roppongi, Ginza and the Golden Gai. I was here during Halloween and found it to be normal crowds as before. Basically Tokyo is a city that never sleeps especially in Shinjuku. The Golden Gai closes at 5am and opens around 7PM just to put things into perspective. You will find a similar time of nightlife experience in Shibuya. Ginza and Roppongi are a bit more mellow and do shut down around midnight and stay relatively calm until late afternoon. If you are looking for Tokyo nightclubs maybe consider Shibuya or Roppongi. If crazy and wild nightlife is what you are looking for then head over to Shinjuku.

Things Okay in Japan but Illegal Around the World

Use my code PAOLO15 at to get $15 off your first Bokksu Japanese snack box!

Shocking Laws okay in Japan, but illegal around the world. So I’ve made videos before on things you can’t do in Japan because of laws or unknown laws that could get you arrested, but in this video I wanted to switch things up a little and share with you some things that are legal in Japan but may be illegal in other parts of the world. Many think that Japan is a very strict country, but when you hear some of these Japanese laws you may be scratching your head. And to be clear from the start, I don’t recommend doing any of these things. I’m not providing legal advice and this is for entertainment only.

JAPAN GUIDE - 60 TINY BARS IN ONE ALLEY!!! -TOKYO'S MEMORY LANE - (OMOIDE YOKOCHO)

Just outside of the worlds busiest train station (Shinjuku) is this tiny alley way hidden under all the sky scrapers of the big city. Omoide Yokocho or Memory Lane in English is a small narrow street with about 60 ramshackle bars that can barely fit their patrons in.
While it is a touristy place now, the roots are genuine and have and are frequented by Japanese people after a hard day at work. The history dates back to the post-war 1940s and little has changed since then.
Get there before development drowns in more generic modern structures.

Let's enjoy a Snack Bar! | Some Japanese nightlife etiquette to enjoy at Snack Bars.

Experience the real nightlife based on Japan’s “Snakku” (Snack Bar) Culture.

- What is Snakku (Snack Bar)?
Snack bars are believed to have originated at the time of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 1964. They began as late-night restaurants, serving light meals (snacks) in addition to alcohol. Normally the snack bar customers sit at the counter, and are served by a barkeep called either mama (female) or master (male).

- Where to experience the Snakku Culture in Japan?
Fukuromachi is the best place that you can't find in big cities. Fukuromachi is a district in an old castle town of Hikone, Shiga. In the past, Fukuromachi was actually a red-light district, with brothels occupying much of the district, reaching a peak of 69 such establishments in 1929. But those businesses were ordered to shut down in 1958, and so the area began a transformation into the Fukuromachi of today. The new district thrived, becoming the largest nightlife district of Shiga’s Koto region (east side of Lake Biwa). Walking through the alleys, some of the buildings still retain elements of the former district such as Bengara-goshi (red lattice), offering a glimpse into the past. Fukuromachi now offers a variety of places to gather and socialize, from traditional snack bars to more casual, modern ones. Yet, the snack bar remains a popular favorite.

- How to enjoy some snack bars in Fukuromachi?
Typically, each snack bar has their own pricing system, including things like a “table charge” that includes small snacks and drinks, “bottle-keep” service allowing customers to purchase a private bottle that is kept for return visits, unlimited drinks for a set period of time, and so on. But for first-time visitors, these systems can be confusing, so we are offering easy-to-use tickets for your convenience to try some of the local bars and restaurants and enjoy a special night out in Hikone. You can easily buy the Hikone Bar-Hopping Drink Tickets online from the link down below with some detailed information. With many bars to choose from, you’re sure to find whatever you’re looking for, whether it’s a quiet place to unwind, a chance to enjoy mama’s cooking, or a night to show off your talent with karaoke!

- Fore more information of Hikone Bar-Hopping Drink Tickets

*NOTES
Hikone Bar-Hopping Drink Tickets are currently not available due to the pandemic.
