Shimanami Kaido | The best cycling routes in Japan

I hope you enjoyed our trip to Shimanami Kaido. It is a beautiful bicycle route that runs through the islands. It connects Ehime prefecture with Hiroshima.
We started our trip in Ehime, but the route can also be started in Hiroshima. There are many places where you can rent bicycles (price: 2000円/60zl per day). We rented cyclo-cross bikes this time, so it was fun to ride, not counting the sore butt. There is also an option for lazy people with an electric bike. If you ride a bike and walk, the route is free. Unicycles, cars have to pay to cross the bridges.
We went there at the beginning of December, and at that time in Japan the temps calmly reach 15C. Unfortunately, as we came to face the route there was a temporary breakdown in the weather. We couldn't rebook our tickets, so we decided to just dress better. It wasn't so bad until the rain came.

The people in these parts of Japan were very friendly and hospitable. For example, when we encountered children returning from school along the route, they often greeted us. People there were more willing to strike up a brief conversation than in busy Tokyo.
Besides, the campaign from the government to support smaller areas of Japan continues in Japan. For one night's stay at a hotel, if one meets the criteria (PCR, or vaccination) one gets vouchers to use locally (in a given prefecture) in the amount of PLN 100 per person. It is worth taking advantage if one has the opportunity.
If anyone has any questions, please write in the comments, we will help as much as we can.
From us, that's it, we recommend Shimanami Kaido wholeheartedly and we'll see you in the next episode.

Hello everyone,

The Shimanami Kaido is listed as one of the world's most scenic bike routes, which I can definitely attest to.

Notes—

This is the Yatsugatake mountain range in Japan. Bordering Nagano and Yamanashi prefectures this volcanic mountain range is home to peaks over 3,000m and is thought to have once been higher than Mt Fuji. With its jagged summits the Yatsugatake is a popular spot with hikers and outdoors lovers of Japan.

Though I’ve ridden quite a bit of the area around the the Yatsugatake in the past I’ve not spent much time on the S or E sides, and as we were trying to decide where to plan our next bike packing adventure I thought a lap around the mountains would be a great way to ride both favorite roads in the area and explore new ones.

From Kiryu City in Gunma Prefecture I mapped out a 410km loop that we planned to tackle over 3 days.

Our goal was to cover around 120km the first two days where most of the elevation in the route was and a near century 150+km on the last day. But, because we wanted to do a camping bikepacking adventure this time we certainly had a fair bit of hours in the saddle ahead of us with all the extra weight.

While I got the bikes setup Michelle took lead on the packing. Once we had the bikes all setup we headed to bed pretty early, as the sun rises in Japan at around 5am this time of year and we wanted to get through the first 10km or so to get to the river paths before morning rush hour started. And with just under 100km and 1,800m of climbing to do we could use a good nights sleep.

Once we reached the river paths we took the Jakawa path to the Tonegawa path, and finally the Kannagawa path, for 30km of car free smooth sailing . We even came across some unexpected wildlife in the farm fields below. (Show fox clip)

After that we hopped off the river ways and began our first climb up the Kanna river to the historic town of Uenomura. This road is very popular with not only cyclist but also motorcycle and drivers looking to take their shinny toys out for a joy ride on the weekends. With that, like many roads in Japan that are known by the Tokyo motorcycle and driving clubs, the number of vehicles you will come across on a weekend or holiday is probably 10x what you will find on weekdays. So if you have the choice it’s always best to ride in popular areas of Japan on weekdays.

The road is beautifully scenic with the massive dam lake Kanna around half way up followed by exposed rock features capped with hanging forests that is really reminiscent of the iconic mountains of Yangshuo in SE China.

Once in Ueno town we were surprised to find the Michinoeki, a sort of travelers market, was closed. So, we headed back to a small local convince store in the first floor of a locals house and got a true bikepacking smorgasbord for lunch.

Then, with replenished energy we began our main climb for the day up the Budou Pass, or Warriors way pass. This was only the second time I have done this pass, and the last time was nearly 5 years ago so I was excited to get to ride this pass again. But, what started out as some fresh new pavement quickly turned to some pretty massive road damage.

Though never too serious that we couldn’t hike around it, this was probably one of the more heavily damaged roads from last years massive late season Typhoon Hagabis. Luckily after about 2km of on and off the bike, as we entered into a misty cloud hanging on the mountain, we were able to hop back on the bikes and summit the pass.

With the climbing work of the day behind us we were more than relieved to find the descending side was in impeccable condition, and had a lot of fun on the car free road flying down to town.

Once in town we found a delicious local restaurant and got two of our favorite dishes. For Michelle, some local soba noodles, and for me a tasty fried Katsu-don.

Finally with full stomachs we headed off to the edge of town to find a campsite for the evening and setup camp.

Day 2 is the big elevation gain day. At just 115km long tomorrow’s ride has a planned 2,200m of gain with a massive climb to the top of the beautiful Venus Line road at the end summiting over 1,800m above sea in what is known as the Kirigamine, or the Misty Highlands.

Top 10 Things To Do In Shikoku, Japan

These are my Top 10 Favorite Things To Do In Shikoku, Japan:
-
10. Bike ride over the epic Kurushima Bridge.
This is one portion of the popular 70 kilometer Shimanami Kaido cycling route and the views along the way are absolutely stunning.
-
9. Kayak the Shimanto River
Another exciting sightseeing experience for the active traveler is a kayak or canoe trip down the Shimanto River. Said to be the “last clear stream of Japan” because it’s remote from any major cities and has no dams, The Shimanto River and surrounding area is as peaceful of a scene as it gets.
-
8. Tokushima Ramen
Changing gears for some culinary highlights is Tokushima Ramen in Tokushima City. It is a combination of Tonkotsu (or pork bone) broth and Shoyu (or soy-based) broths with pork slices, green onions, bamboo shoots, and a topped with a raw egg.
It’s rich, a little sweet, and very filling.
-
7. Katsuo Tataki & Green Tea Beer
In the south central Shikoku city of Kochi, their speciality is Katsuo Tataki. Bonito or Skipjack Tuna are seared on the outside over a sweet-smelling straw fire, sliced and eaten as Sashimi.
A bonus recommendation is to try the Green tea beer close by in the Hirome Market in downtown Kochi City.
-
6. Explore the Iya Valley
Back outdoors it’s into the Iya Valley. One of the most incredibly green landscapes I’ve ever seen and home to the famous vine bridges. It’s thought that these vine bridges of Iya Valley were created in the 12th century by one clan of samurai warriors after a big loss - If they were pursued, they could simply cut the vines. For a more secure line, and another scenic perspective, you can go zip lining right over the valley itself.
-
5. Matsuyama Castle
If you’re a history buff, the Matsuyama Castle in Matsuyama is a must-see. Originally constructed on top of Mount Katsuyama in 1602, it’s one Japan’s original 12 castles. Inside there’s exhibits of its history and the feudal period, and at it’s windows - the views of Matsuyama from above are beautiful.
-
4. Have Tea at Ritsurin Garden
Speaking of beautiful, the Ritsurin Garden in Takamatsu is one of the most pristine patches of landscapes you’ll come across. Dating all the back to the early 17th century, the property of an old Feudal lord is one of the most famous historical gardens in all of Japan. Make sure you stop into the tea house for a traditional matcha to get the full experience of this place.
-
3. Visit the Yusuhara Library
Another incredibly tranquil setup is the Yusuhara Community Library in the Kochi Prefecture. The Library was designed by famous Japanese Architect, Kengo Kuma, and includes plenty of reading space, a grand piano, and even a rock climbing wall. The architecture inside the library blends perfectly with the natural surroundings outside.
-
2. Learn Local Japanese Crafts from Shikoku
A few moments that I’ll remember most from my time in Shikoku was meeting and working alongside some of the most interesting local artists. I made paper the traditional way up in the mountains of the Kochi Prefecture. I Dyed indigo at an old indigo dyer’s property in Tokushima. I created the most incredible keepsake from scratch with an old school blacksmith. I danced my way into making udon in the heart of udon country.
-
1. The Henro Buddhist Pilgrimage
The number one thing I would recommend doing in Shikoku, Japan is to experience the iconic Buddhist Pilgrimage of henro (Ohenro) throughout the island.
-
There you have it, 10 things to do in Shikoku, Japan - a place that is still relatively undiscovered to most travelers who come to Japan, and for that reason - I would get here before it’s too late!

New Forest Roads | Cycling Japan Beyond Tokyo & Kyoto | Rindo Ep 7 Best Climbs Series

I recently stumbled upon a new map of Japan that listed a road I had never seen before in our area, and thought, awesome I gotta try that one!

So, off on this weeks adventure to explore uncharted territory, will the road be ridable? Will it cross the mountains, or come to a dead end? Will there even be a road or is this all a clever illusion made to torture poor souls like mine who spend way too much time on Google Maps satellite imagery trying to find new roads that aren't listed?

All this and more in store this week. let me know what you think in the comments below!

Though most people think of the dense urban landscapes of Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka when they picture Japan few know that Japan is some 80% uninhabited wilderness. It is this vast wild mixed with amazing small roads that snake through the forests, hot springs, hidden shrines, and amazing eats that makes Japan one of the best places to ride a bike in the world. If you haven't already ridden a bike in Japan I highly recommend making sure your next trip to Japan includes a bit of cycling outside of the cities in the rich natural satoyama countryside.

Undiscovered Climbs Cycling in Japan | Road Riding Japan Beyond Tokyo and Kyoto | Rindo Ep 8

This week I cycle one of Japan's best kept secrets, the Sakuhara Pass! A bicycle riders paradise of car free roads and epic adventure

I would like to invite you on a ride deep into the inaka countryside of Gunma and Tochigi to a pass not known by many, even the locals! At over 1,200m above sea and starting at 200m this climb is an epic summit with sweeping views of the best of the Japanese countryside. What more, did I mention how I spent over 4hrs on this road and didn't come across a single car?! Cycling heaven can be found out here in Japan and this is my attempt to capture the pure riding bliss of this beautiful slice of the country.

- We've been having some pretty amazing weather lately. Though a bit cold in the morning still, by about 10 a.m. or so, sun's up high enough where it gets really warm, perfect for a midday ride. So, I thought this morning, I'd head out early, do one of my favorite loops here. It's one of our bigger climbing loops, that we call our big backyard loop. I ride about 100 kilometers, and somewhere over 2,000 meters of gain. It's a pretty sizeable loop for the day. that spends almost the entire day on forward stroke. I'm glad I brought these gloves. Almost seven degrees at the top here. 502. Like a lot of the climbs in this area, this climb starts off with a nice gentle gradient as you follow a river. Maybe averaging two, 3% for the first five or 6 kilometers or so, until it reaches the beginning of the real climbing where you'll probably hold somewhere around seven to 9% average to the top. That can make it pretty deceptive if you're looking at the full profile of the climb out here, as it might only say that the average is something like four or 5%. The reality is to have a gentle beginning followed by a very steep final approach to the top of the mountain. This is probably my favorite road in this area. It's been over two hours now and I haven't seen a car. That's awesome! Look at that view! Wow! Time for a snack break. I love this little energy bars. I came up with the recipe a couple of years back when I first moved to Japan. And Michelle took it to the next level by making one of these cute little onigiri shapes just like the rice balls you can find here at the convenience stores. There's the top. 1100 meters, wow! Oh, I love that downhill. All right, one climb to go. About one big climb really and then a little bump on the way home. What beautiful day here at the Lake Kusagi. Wow! Incredible! Wuuh, that's a long way down! Look at all the stairs! Man, even if it started out cold today, it is nice and warm now. 26 degrees , we're at 820 meters above the sea. Might be near 30 by the time we get down to the valley. It's over 2,200 meters climb. The elevation 925 meters. 1K to go. About 10, 11%. Wuuh, almost there. Ooh, there's the top. Oh great, 1,025 meters, wuuh! Oh yeah! Oh, that feels good! Wow! Check out this view, wow! There's Mt. Akagi. If you'd like to see a video of me climbing Mt. Akagi, click here, here, here. Looking forward to this, 900 meters descent coming up. All right, let go! The flat fill climb is about a 100 meter gain. It's a nice little way to bypass the busier road down the valley and pop you out right on the river pass. Man, this is getting toasty down here. It's gonna pushing 30 degrees at this point. All right, so really, it's just down hill from here. Ooh! Love ending the rides on this river path here. No cars, nice smooth pavement, really flat, great way to wind down after a long hard ride. Fantastic ride. And the ride by numbers, 7 hours 45 minutes, 103 kilometers and 2,435 meters a gain. Hope you enjoyed, see you next time.

60 km bicycle ride | RIDE2020 - Jogashima Islands | Japan Bicycle Vlog

60 km bicycle ride | RIDE2020 - Jogashima Islands | Japan Bicycle Vlog is a Vlog of my exciting 60 Km ride to Jogashima Islands (One of Hidden Gem) from Yokohama. This is ride-1 of my #RIDE2020 Series.

This ride was done on 1st day of Summer, Aug 1st 2020, It was a hot & Dry day perfect for a ride. This 60 Km bicycle ride takes us throgh a relaxed path which has its own share of Tunnels, Rural roads, and long coastal path to culminate at Misakiguchi station, which became an entry point to Jogashima Islands, one true hidden gem of the Miura peninsula.

Watch the Vlog to experience the ride and live the Jogashima Islands through my lens
