Cycling 70km Across 6 Islands In Japan | Shimanami Kaido Travel Guide

Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan's most famous cycling routes connecting the main island Honshu with Shikoku.

Ever since I heard about this bikeway a few months ago, I knew I had to travel there some day to experience it for myself!!

So, I packed up my bags, bought a Shinkansen ticket and took a spontaneous trip down to Onomichi, Hiroshima.

Shimanami Kaido Bikeway runs between Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture, hopping across 6 islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

You can start your journey from either the Hiroshima side or the Ehime side. I started from the Hiroshima side because the views get better and better as you go along towards Ehime.

So, hope you enjoy the new adventure with me and let me know in the comments something you have always wanted to do!! And then MAKE time for it and actually go do it! :D

The Most Beautiful Cycling Route in the World I Shimanami Kaido I Japan

Ever wanted to explore the most scenic biking route in the world? The Shimanami Kaido runs through six islands in the south of Japan. It is known for its natural beauty and towering suspension bridges. This video covers the entire route from Onomichi to Imabari and back in two days.

24 hours in Onomichi | Cycling the Shimanami Kaido | Japan in Summer | Solo Travel Guide

Onomichi is a cruisy sea-side town that offers hiking, ramen and more cycling than your butt can handle. Ferry across the peninsula and cycle the Shimanami Kaido as it slowly dawns on you how woefully wrong you were to overestimate your cardio fitness.

The Shimanami Kaido: The best bicycle route in Japan しまなみ海道

Subscribe to my channel here. Thank you so much for a thumb-up!

Behind the scenes:
The Shimanami Kaido is 70-kilometer-long bicycle route that stretches from the city of Onomichi on the main island of Honshu to Imabari on Shikoku. It crosses several bridges and islands, offering a different side of Japan. All the bridges have designated bicycle lanes. In my opinion, this is the best bicycle route in Japan. We did this travel adventure in May 2018 within two days, spending the night in a ryokan on Omishima Island.

Technical infos:
I fixed a DJI Osmo+ (the DJI Osmo Pocket didn’t exist at the time) and a Crystal Sky display on the front of my bicycle. Additionally I used a DJI Mavic Pro drone for the aerial shots.

Cycling Japan VLOG: Shimanami Kaido

The Shimanami Kaido is a 70km (150km return) long toll road that connects Honshu to Shikoku, crossing over 6 islands and 7 of the worlds longest suspension bridges to do so. There is a bicycle-only route so you don't even have to interact with cars.

Cycling the Shimanami Kaido

The Shimanami Kaido (しまなみ海道) is one of my favorite cycling routes in Japan. While the route sounds quite intense, most of the inclines are manageable—as long as you stick to the main route—and speeding down the mountains can be very rewarding. Crossing the first few islands from Onomichi can feel tough at times with frequent ups and downs, and some busy urban areas. However, pressing on makes it all worth it as you get used to cycling the long distance and the views just keep getting better. We've covered the route in a few articles on AAJ, as it tops our top three cycling routes in Japan list, but this time we're giving you the full experience.

Watch the video above to experience the journey and then read below for the key spots along the route 75-kilometer (46.6-mile) journey along the Shimanami Kaido.

The route starts in Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and ends in Imabari in Ehime Prefecture. Rent a bike and get going on one of the most beautiful routes with plenty of perfect beaches and sea views. Get that perfect snap as you hit the halfway point or go for a quick swim to cool off before hitting the trail again.

Cycling The Shimanami Kaido Japan movie

The Shimanami Kaido (しまなみ海道, Shimanami Kaidō) is a 60 kilometer long toll road that connects Japan's main island of Honshu to the island of Shikoku, passing over six small islands in the Seto Inland Sea. It is also known as the Nishiseto Expressway. There are two other land connections between Shikoku and Honshu, but the Shimanami Kaido is the only one traversable by foot or bicycle.

The Shimanami Kaido begins on Honshu in Onomichi City. It then leads across the six islands of Mukaishima, Innoshima, Ikuchijima, Omishima, Hakatajima and Oshima, before terminating on Shikoku in Imabari City. The route was opened in 1999, so the bridges are modern and attractive. Along the way, travelers can enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Seto Inland Sea and the islands' small towns.

Tokyo Bike Review | Biking In Japan

A very well made documentary by StreetFilms details the cycling culture within Tokyo and why 14% of all journeys are made by bicycle.

It begins with an urban cycling consultant's concerns that Tokyo lacks significant dedicated cycling infrastructure for such a significant global city, I disagree that such cycling infrastructure is needed. The results speak for themselves, could they be be better, maybe, but the system works so well now.

I found cycling in Tokyo much more pleasant than cycling in Sydney. The only thing that shocked me about Tokyo was the fact that parking inspectors could simply take your bike from the street without notice and dump it in a compound if its parked in the wrong place. This can be especially surprising for non native speakers of Japanese, where in their culture it's considered theft. But the rules are the rules and when in Rome.

Please have a look and if you've ridden in Tokyo let me know your experience.

[Cycling Japan] Road Bike Day Trip to Inuyama Castle From Nagoya

In today's cycling Japan vlog, Thuong and I will be riding road bikes from Nagoya to Inuyama Castle. The distance is short enough to do a day day trip by bike, which is much better than taking the train in my opinion. Unfortunately there is a lot of busy road city riding on the way there, but there are still plenty of beautiful sights along the way. Today's ride was mostly done at a relaxing pace, while taking some nice food breaks along the way with some yummy Japanese food.

[Cycling Japan] Bikepacking 170KM From Nagoya to Kyoto (Lake Biwa Route)

I had a 4 day weekend break from work, and we (I) really wanted to do another big cycling trip. Since we both had to renew our passports in Osaka, we decided to cycle there, but first head to Kyoto from Nagoya on day 1 and enjoy a day there.

This is day 1 part 1 of our Kansai Cycling Trip and this video includes our first part of our ride from Nagoya to Lake Biwa. Part 2 (the same ride, but different video) will document our ride along the coast of Lake Biwa to Kyoto.

Our road bikes are loaded up in a semi bikepacking setup with my restrap saddle bag, our top tube bags from Giant, and Thuong's full size oldschool framebag.

We went into this weekend trip after an extremely busy week of work for me. I didn't get to bed until 2am, and we finished packing and reserving our first hotel the morning of our departure.. Felt great to finally escape the daily routine and get out on the bike.

We also had spectacular weather all weekend, probably the best weather we've had for cycling in Japan in a long long time.. Anyway, hope you enjoy the video and you can check out our cycling route here..

Cycle the Shimanami Kaido

Shikoku is waiting for you! The Shimanami Kaido runs from Onomichi (near Hiroshima) to Imabari (in Ehime). Some people do this 70km journey in one day, but we encourage guests to explore this area slowly, to go swimming, to climb mountains, to really get a feeling for the pace of life of this area. We provide detailed maps with cultural and historical information, advice on where to go and what to eat, and make hotel arrangements. We can arrange guides if needed. We also provide luggage transfer, breakfast and dinner at the hotels, bike rental, and (if needed) bike support and phone rental. We work with small local hotels - an inn owned by a fisherman who serves what he catches and a more traditional ryokan with only four rooms. We believe our 2 night/3 day tour offers travellers the chance to experience the best this area has to offer!

Come to Shikoku! The island few make it to, but those who do never forget!

Cycling the Shimanami Kaido Cycling Route near Onomichi, Hiroshima Prefecture, Japan

The Shimanami Kaido Cycle Route links the main islands of Honshu and Shikoku in Japan through a series of bridges and islands in the Seto Inland Sea.

The 70km cycle trail takes you between islands across a series of impressive bridges with special cycle lanes and for added fun there's a network of ferries to help you get back. We rented bikes in Onomichi and set off to explore some of the trail which is a great day out for those who enjoy cycling.

Between two of Japan's main 4 islands is an inland sea boasting over 3,000 islands. Connecting the towns of Onomichi on Honshu and Imabari on Shikoku is a highway. This highway passes through six of these islands and uses 6 bridges (which span as long as 4km).

The route has been developed to cater for cyclist and is now famous for its variety of aesthetic bridges and natural scenery.
