Japan's Most Beautiful Cycling Route | Shimanami Kaido Travel Guide

Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan's most famous cycling routes connecting the main island Honshu with Shikoku.

Ever since I heard about this bikeway a few months ago, I knew I had to travel there some day to experience it for myself!!

So, I packed up my bags, bought a Shinkansen ticket and took a spontaneous trip down to Onomichi, Hiroshima.

Shimanami Kaido Bikeway runs between Onomichi in Hiroshima Prefecture and Imabari in Ehime Prefecture, hopping across 6 islands of the Seto Inland Sea.

You can start your journey from either the Hiroshima side or the Ehime side. I started from the Hiroshima side because the views get better and better as you go along towards Ehime.

So, hope you enjoy the new adventure with me and let me know in the comments something you have always wanted to do!! And then MAKE time for it and actually go do it! :D

Cycle the most beautiful coastal scenery route in Japan! CNN Travel wrote that this is one of the most incredible cycling routes in the world! And surprisingly, it is still the best-kept secret in Japan! Not many Japanese are familiar with the Shimanami Kaido cycling route from Onomichi, Hiroshima to Imabari, Ehime in Shikoku. In this video, I will cover 10-18 different observations and suggestions on what you should know before you attempt to cycle the Shimanami Kaido. There are a lot of YouTube videos about cycling, vlogging, and experiencing the Shimanami Kaido, but none of them cover in detail what you should know if this is your first time cycling the Shimanami. This video tries to cover everything that I noticed and wish I knew before I started cycling the Shimanami Kaido for three days.

The entire Shimanami Kaido one-way route is 75 kilometers, crossing over six islands and six massive suspension bridges. The last bridge before Imabari, the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, is the world's longest suspension bridge at four kilometers long. If you are planning to visit Japan or presently live in Japan and enjoy cycling, the Shimanami Kaido is a must on your bucket list!

Cycling the Shimanami Kaido (ALL 70 KM ????) | One of the World’s BEST Cycling Routes

Cycling the Shimanami Kaido was a challenge… but I had to bike this world-famous cycling route that connects Japan's main island of Honshu to the island of Shikoku, passing over six small islands in the Seto Inland Sea, before I would leave Southern Japan and move to my permanent home in Japan.

I am Noah takes the world. I am obsessed with hiking and biking in scenic places. The Shimanami Kaido is one of Japan’s most scenic biking routes. I started my route at Onomichi Station and ended at Imabari Station.

Japan's BEST Cycling Route 00:00-00:51

Onomichi 00:51-01:33

Mukaishima 01:33-01:54

The first of the islands, most of the highlights you’ll find here run along the blue-marked cycling route. The route runs along Tachibana, a stretch of coastline with some popular pit stops, like cafes, an artisanal chocolate store, and a verdant torii gate overlooking the water.

Innoshima 01:54-02:26

The journey through this island is short, only about 8 kilometers or so, meaning that if you really want to see the island and its sights, you’ll have to go a little off the main route. Innoshimaohashi Memorial Park is probably the most popular and easily accessed highlight on this island. Here you’ll find an unexplained, giant white dinosaur statue and rest facilities—seats, public toilets, vending machines, and the like—nested right by Shimanami Beach. If you have the time, energy, and motivation to go a little deeper, the island also boasts Mount Shirotaki, home to 700 Buddhist statues and spectacular views of the Innoshima Bridge.

Ikuchijima 02:26-03:03

Tucked neatly in the middle of the journey, Ikeuchi is possibly the most touristic island of the route, making it an excellent place to stop, take a rest, explore the area on foot, and even stay for the night. The biggest attractions here are Kosanji Temple and the Hill of Hope.

Omishima 03:03-03:16

Although it’s the biggest of the islands on the route, the journey through Omishima is short, about 5 kilometers running along the island’s east coast. If you want to explore in more depth, there are plenty of options to do so, with shrines, modern museums, and stunning nature spots dotted throughout the island’s landscape.

Hakatajima 03:16-03:42

If you stick to the main cycling route, Hakatajima is only briefly covered, as the road runs along the island’s western coast. If you’re so inclined, it is quite doable to cycle the island’s circumference, which clocks in at 20 kilometers and is relatively flat. Alternatively, you could scale the 149-meter high Hirakiyama mountain, which in spring offers incredible views with the landscape blanketed in soft pink cherry blossoms.

Oshima 03:42-04:36

Along this way, you’ll find beautiful long sandy beaches, quaint fishing ports, and impressive shipyards, and sweeping views across the water to the Kurushima Kaikyo Bridge, an iconic view of the Shimanami Kaido.

Imabari 04:36-06:01

The Shimanami Toso Map! A MUST for English speakers and the key to a successful Shimanami Kaido!

If you are planning to cycle the most stunning coastal scenic route in Japan, for English speakers, there is only one really comprehensive and easy-to-understand map series of the seven Shimanami Kaido islands called The Shimanami Toso Map. This map series explains clearly and includes much-needed detailed information on the terrain, roads, accommodation options, sights, as well as transportation options, including ferries and buses. Additionally, the maps provide information on rest areas, local attractions, and recommended restaurants.

This is the link: for ordering within Japan from Amazon.co.jp. However, there is an issue that the Shimanami Toso Map can only be bought on Amazon.co.jp (Amazon Japan) and only be delivered to a Japanese address. I tried searching for the Shimanami Toso Maps on Amazon.com (US), but they were not available. I tried to place an order on Amazon.co.jp and have it sent outside of Japan but it would not accept the address. It is unclear whether they can be ordered from other Amazon networks in other countries. If you live or have a friend or relative in Japan, you can order the maps on amazon.co.jp and have them shipped to your/their address. If you are coming to Japan as a tourist or short-term visitor, you can set up an Amazon.co.jp account and arrange for the maps to be delivered to your hotel or a nearby convenience store upon your arrival, ensuring that Amazon delivers to the selected convenience store. I am sorry that this may be an extra step for those of you living outside Japan. I only became aware of this issue after uploading the video. If anyone has a suggestion on how to make this ordering and receiving process easier, please write in the comments below. Thank you!

Why I want to do the Shimanami Kaido ????????????

Why I want to do the Shimanami Kaido, one of the world's best cycling routes in Japan, from Honshu to Shikoku.

The Shimanami Kaido is a 70km cycling route over the Seto Inland Sea in Japan. It's a beautiful track across several tall suspension bridges and islands, and the views are amazing. It's also a great way to get from Honshu to Shikoku if you're travelling around Japan. The video covers how long it takes, hiring bikes, places to stop, what there is to see and what to do if you get stuck. I'm just as excited about going to Onomichi, a town at the start/end of the route, which has a beautiful temple walk, a cat alley and a lucky cat museum!

Japan's Must-Visit Cycling Journey | Shimanami Kaido

The Shimanami Kaido cycle across Japan's Inland Sea is Incredible. To be honest you have to do it for your self to really feel how incredible it is. Even if it kills you for the next two days, you will not regret it. Even though it was really tough in the scorching hot temperatures, I decided on the bus back to Onomichi that I would come back here soon to cycle again.
Besides that, if you ever come make sure to wear cycling pants Tommy regretted not wearing any.
