Tokyo
Tokyo, Japan is the original mega-city, a throbbing, dynamic metropolis of 32.5 million people, well over 50 percent more massive than the world's next largest metropolitan areas. With populations clustering around 20 million people, the metro regions of Seoul, Mexico City, New York and Mumbai are all less than two-thirds the magnitude of the Tokyo metro area.
Tokyo's ranking as the world's number one city goes well beyond the sheer scale of its population. Its lively Shibuya district is home to the world's busiest intersection, a vibrant pedestrian scramble which people traverse from every direction at the same time. Tokyo's famously bustling Tsukiji Market plays fishmonger to the world as the largest wholesale fish and seafood market on the planet.
Yet, despite its immense proportions, many worldly, well-traveled observers marvel at how well Tokyo functions. Tokyo's subway trains, packed to the gills during peak rush hour travel times, are known for arriving and departing with impressive precision. Moreover, the city manages to keep a comfortable handle on pollution, crime and other challenges that often accompany such immense urban environments.Tokyo officially Tokyo Metropolis (東京都 Tōkyō-to), is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan. Tokyo is the capital of Japan, the center of the Greater Tokyo Area, and the largest metropolitan area in the world. It is the seat of the Japanese government and the Imperial Palace, and the home of the Japanese Imperial Family. Tokyo is in the Kantō region on the southeastern side of the main island Honshu and includes the Izu Islands and Ogasawara Islands. Tokyo Metropolis was formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture (東京府 Tōkyō-fu) and the city of Tokyo (東京市 Tōkyō-shi).
The Tokyo Metropolitan government administers the 23 special wards of Tokyo (each governed as a city), which cover the area that was the city of Tokyo, as well as 39 municipalities in the western part of the prefecture and the two outlying island chains. The population of the special wards is over 8 million people, with the total population of the prefecture exceeding 13 million. The prefecture is part of the world's most populous metropolitan area with upwards of 35 million people and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy with a GDP of US$1.479 trillion at purchasing power parity in 2008, ahead of New York City metropolitan area, which ranks second on the list. The city hosts 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, the highest number of any city.
Tokyo has been described as one of the three command centers for the world economy, along with New York City and London. The city is considered an alpha+ world city, listed by the GaWC's 2008 inventory[ and ranked fourth among global cities by A.T. Kearney's 2012 Global Cities Index. In 2012, Tokyo was named the most expensive city for expatriates, according to the Mercer and Economist Intelligence Unit cost-of-living surveys, and in 2009 named the third Most Liveable City and the World's Most Livable Megalopolis by the magazine Monocle. The Michelin Guide has awarded Tokyo by far the most Michelin stars of any city in the world. Tokyo hosted the 1964 Summer Olympics and is currently a candidate city for the 2020 Summer Olympic Games.

Tokyo, Japan - Part 1

Tokyo

Tokyo, officially Tokyo Metropolis, is one of the 47 prefectures of Japan. Tokyo Metropolis was formed in 1943 from the merger of the former Tokyo Prefecture and the city of Tokyo.

Tokyo is often thought of as a city but is commonly referred to as a metropolitan prefecture. The Tokyo metropolitan government administers the 23 Special Wards of Tokyo (each governed as an individual city), which cover the area that was formerly the City of Tokyo before it merged and became the subsequent metropolitan prefecture. The metropolitan government also administers 39 municipalities in the western part of the prefecture and the two outlying island chains. The population of the special wards is over 9 million people, with the total population of the prefecture exceeding 13 million. The prefecture is part of the world's most populous metropolitan area with upwards of 35 million people and the world's largest urban agglomeration economy with a GDP of US$1.479 trillion at purchasing power parity, ahead of the New York metropolitan area in 2008. The city hosts 51 of the Fortune Global 500 companies, the highest number of any city.

Tokyo Tower
Source: Wikipedia
Tokyo Tower is a communications and observation tower located in Shiba Park, Minato, Tokyo, Japan. At 333 metres (1,093 ft), it is the second-tallest artificial structure in Japan. The structure is an Eiffel Tower-inspired lattice tower that is painted white and international orange to comply with air safety regulations.

Built in 1958, the tower's main sources of revenue are tourism and antenna leasing. Over 150 million people have visited the tower since its opening. FootTown, a four-storey building located directly under the tower, houses museums, restaurants and shops. Departing from there, guests can visit two observation decks. The two-storey Main Observatory is located at 150 metres (490 ft), while the smaller Special Observatory reaches a height of 250 metres (820 ft).

The tower acts as a support structure for an antenna. Originally intended for television broadcasting, radio antennas were installed in 1961, but the tower is now used to broadcast signals for Japanese media outlets such as NHK, TBS and Fuji TV. Japan's planned digital television transition by July 2011 was problematic, however; Tokyo Tower's height (333 meters) was not high enough to adequately support complete terrestrial digital broadcasting to the area. A taller digital broadcasting tower, known as Tokyo Skytree, was completed on February 29, 2012.

JAPAN: TOKYO TRIP AND ITINERARY PART 1

Our first day in Japan!!
We stayed at an airbnb in Shinjuku. The cheapest we found in the area! We wander around the area, and visited the Tokyo Metropolitan Building, Sensoji Temple, and the Golden Gai. All and all, it was a fun day trying to beat the jetlag after a 15 hours flight from Toronto!!

1st day: Arrived in Tokyo at 3pm, and went straight to our airbnb in Shinjuku. We got into the wrong train but the local was so helpful and friendly! We took a rest as we had jetlag and went out for dinner, and walked around Shinjuku for a bit

2nd day:
-Woke up super early because of jetlag and went out for sushi for breakfast. Price varied (100-250 Yen per piece). It was Steve's first time eating sushi!
-Then we walked to the Tokyo Metropolitan Government building to get a good look of Tokyo from the 43rd floor observation deck. Entrance is free.
-Finally got a train map, and figured out how the subway system work. So we went to Sensoji temple in Asakusa. It was super crowded for New Years, and many girls wearing beautiful kimonos. So Kawaii! I tried Takoyaki for the first time! It was ok.
-Went to a local cafe as we were in serious need for a coffee. Jet lag hit us hard. Btw, coffee is super expensive here (400-500Yen for a small cup)!!
-Went back to Shinjuku, and went to a traditional korean restaurant where we had to sit on the floor, and just had some beers while we searched on the next activity. Steve really wanted to visit a samurai museum, and so we found one near us!
-Plenty to do in Shinjuku including many restaruants, clubs, garden, museums, shops - all within walking distance. Went to the samurai museum and we are glad we did because we learned a lot about the Japanese history!
-Went back to the Golden Gai - an area full of tiny bars that fits about 6 people each. Fun area, and we went to Kenzo's bar as it has a sign Foreigners welcome. Kenzo loves leopards and his bar is covered by the prints. Not to mention, he has the best housemade sake in Tokyo! Also a good place to meet other travellers.
