HISTORY OF EMANCIPATION PARK
After the devastating earthquake of 1692 in Port Royal, several English settlers recognized the enormous value of the Liguanea Plain in St. Andrew. Following the earthquake, a wealthy sugar plantation owner named Colonel Beeston sold 2,000 acres of the lands on the plain to the British colonial government for the re-development of Kingston. Before then, Port Royal had been the centre of Jamaica's bustling commercial activities.
During the post-emancipation period and the decline of the sugar plantations, several Jamaicans living in the rural areas as well as immigrants from countries such as China, Lebanon, Syria and India, flocked the city of Kingston by the thousands in search of better working conditions and business opportunities.
As Kingston's population mushroomed, many merchants who previously lived above their business places in central Kingston relocated to the upper circles of the Liguanea Plain now known as uptown. The earthquake of 1907, further encouraged migration from Downtown Kingston to St. Andrew – Kingston now being divided into two parishes (Kingston and St. Andrew) because of its immense growth. As the business activities and persons who were then considered being from the upper crust of the society shifted to St. Andrew, there was now a need for social and sporting activities uptown.

Flat Bridge
Parish: St. Catherine
While it cannot be positively ascertained when this bridge was built, it was definitely constructed after 1724. Edward Long describes it in his History of Jamaica printed in 1774: This bridge is flat and composed of planks on frame of timberwork which rests upon two piers and two buttresses projecting from the banks, constructed with piles and braces interlaced with masonry.
When this bridge was being constructed, the sixteen plantations in the Bog Walk area were obliged to send one slave in every fifty to work on the River Road, sometimes called Sixteen Mile Walk. Gravel, marl, lime, sand and stone had to be dug. Slaves often lost their lives as they performed dangerous tasks in the Gorge. Contracts for timber and for masons to work on the bridge were authorized at vestry meetings.
Between 1881 and 1915, the floor of the bridge was washed away and later re-floored with iron girders and buckle plates taken from the original flooring of the May Pen bridge. Today, the bridge of three spans is supported by two piers and two abutments. In the 1930s it had metal handrails and later wooden ones, but these were devoured by the river at different times. Semi-circular spheres are now the only protection on the bridge itself.

KINGSTON, JAMAICA - I’ve wanted to visit Jamaica for a long time, from the famous jerk and curries, to the unique mix of culture, and reggae music - I was thrilled to finally have a chance to go. And 10 days in Jamaica didn’t let me know - the food, amazing people, and adventure we had on this island were unforgettable. Stay tuned for a full Jamaican food and travel video series throughout this gorgeous Caribbean island.
We begin this trip with a Jamaican street food tour in Kingston, the largest city in Jamaica, and a great place to explore and get a feel of city life, and a mix of cultures represented in Jamaica.
Coronation Market - As one of the biggest outdoor food markets in Jamaica and the Caribbean, you can be assured, Coronation Market is a bustling, colorful, paradise of fruits and vegetables. You’ll find everything you need here to make Jamaican food - from Scotch bonnet chilies to ackee. It’s fantastic. On the way out of the market, we found a man selling soup - Jamaican bean soup with cow skin, and pumpkin soup with chicken feet. It was spectacular. Soup - 120 JMD ($0.88) per bowl
National Heroes Circle - Alice Stall - Next up on this Jamaican street food tour, we headed to National Heroes Circle, known for its street food stalls that sell spicy crabs, soups, and corn. The crab was delicious, simmered with thyme and scotch bonnet chilies. The corn was served with chunks of mature coconut, an amazing combination. And finally Alice, makes some amazing pumpkin soup, full of chicken feet and organs - don’t miss it in Kingston. Crab and everything - 2,600 JMD for everyone - there were about 8 of us.
Ibo Spice Portal - This was an unplanned spot on this food tour - we found it and decided to go check it out. Turned out to be an amazing experience. So Ital food, comes from the world Vital, which is typically a Rastafari way to eat - typically vegetarian, focusing on natural and local ingredients. Ibo Spice Portal is a small Rasta community yard where they always have food cooking and juices brewing. It’s friendly, relaxed, artistic, and the food is delicious. We all enjoyed the mix of vegetarian food, served in a calabash. Also, the guava soursop juice was one of the best I’ve ever had. Ital vegan food - 700 JMD ($5.12) per bowl
Jerk Pan Chicken - Red Hills Road - Finally to finish this Jamaican street food tour of Kingston, we had to eat jerk pan chicken, a staple street food of Jamaica, and something so tasty, you can’t resist. Red Hills Road is the famous pan chicken spot in Kingston and vendors line the road with the barrel grills. The chicken is grilled, slathered in sauce, and topped with bread. Pan chicken - 500 JMD ($3.66) per pack

St. Ann's Bay is a historic town located on the northern coast of Jamaica. It is the capital of the parish of St. Ann, which is named after Saint Anne, the grandmother of Jesus. St. Ann's Bay is known for its rich history, beautiful beaches, and vibrant culture. Here are some key points about St. Ann's Bay:
History: St. Ann's Bay is one of the oldest European-settled areas in Jamaica. It was founded in 1536 by Christopher Columbus's son, Diego Columbus. The town served as the first Spanish capital of Jamaica until it was destroyed by the English in 1655. After the English took control, St. Ann's Bay became an important trading port and played a significant role in Jamaica's colonial history.
Landmarks: One of the notable landmarks in St. Ann's Bay is the St. Ann's Bay Courthouse, which was built in the early 19th century. MIND BLOWING???? Ocho Rios Town Jamaica The Tourist Capital Full Tour 2021
Ocho Rios (Spanish for Eight Rivers) is a town in the parish of Saint Ann on the north coast of Jamaica, and is more widely referred to as Ochi by locals. Beginning as a sleepy fishing village, Ocho Rios has seen explosive growth in the last decade to become a popular tourist destination featuring duty-free shopping, a cruise-ship terminal, world-renowned tourist attractions and several beaches and acclaimed resorts. In addition to being a port of call for cruise ships, Ocho Rios also hosts cargo ships at the Reynolds Pier for the exportation of sugar, limestone, and in the past, bauxite.The estimated population of the town in 2011 was 16,671, which is nearly 10% of the total population of St. Ann. The town is served by both the Donald Sangster International Airport (97 km west of Ocho Rios) and the Ian Fleming International Airport (17 km east of Ocho Rios). Scuba diving and other water sports are offered in the town's vicinity.
The name Ocho Rios is a possible misnomer, as there are not currently eight rivers in the area. It could be a British corruption of the original Spanish name Las Chorreras (the waterfalls), a name given to the village because of the nearby Dunn's River Falls. In 2008, the attraction Mystic Mountain opened with a bobsled experience inspired by the Jamaican bobsled team that participated in the 1988 Olympics in Calgary. The attraction received a $570-million upgrade in 2019.
The North Coast Highway from the Sangster International Airport at Montego Bay to Ocho Rios has been improved since 2007 and the journey is now an hour and forty five minutes drive. On 26 August 2011, the Jamaican government announced a $21 million revitalization plan for the resort area. Since March 2016, with the opening of the North-South portion of Highway 2000 (whose North terminus is located at Mammee Bay, a suburb of Ocho Rios), driving and commute times into the nation's capital, Kingston, have gone from over 2 hours to a little under an hour. The opening of this highway has reduced traffic on the old route between Jamaica's two cities (through the town and onto Fern Gully) immensely.
