Jaffna Town: Travel Video of Northern Tamil, Sri Lanka (யாழ்ப்பாணம்)

Visit: for more travel tips and street food!

Jaffna is the northern capital of the Tamil area of Sri Lanka. Not long ago it was the center of the Sri Lankan civil war, but today Jaffna remains safe to visit as a tourist.

Jaffna town (யாழ்ப்பாணம்) is full of rich Tamil culture, a great place to hit the streets are explore the local food and flavors of town.

During this Jaffna travel video I walk around on Beach Road, eat a delicious Sri Lankan food breakfast of paratha bread and pol sambol (coconut garnish), check out the Jaffna Fort, walk past countless old building ruins, take a chaotic walk straight through the center of Jaffna town, eat a sour Jaffna mango, visit Nallur Kovil Hindu Temple for a 4pm traditional ceremony, dine on traditional local style Tamil Jaffna food, and finally taste for the first time a cup of thick wood apple juice!

Jaffna town (யாழ்ப்பாணம்) is an amazing town with a rich history and a very interesting culture. There are many things to do in Jaffna and a lot of places to see.

I hope you enjoyed this Jaffna travel video! Thanks for watching!

Friendly Local Man in Jaffna, Sri Lanka ????????

People in Jaffna in the north of Sri Lanka are so friendly and welcoming. When I roaming around Colombo I was always suspicious when I was approached by a stranger, because most of the time they were trying to scam me. However in Jaffna, which doesn't get a lot of tourists, everyone I spoke to were genuinely nice.

Exploring Sri Lanka's Peaceful City. ????????

After a 6 and a half hour train journey from Colombo we arrived in Jaffna, the capital city of Sri Lanka's northern province.

Jaffna is so far from other points of interest in Sri Lanka that I hadn't visited up until now. We took the first morning train so that we'd arrive just after midday and not waste a whole day travelling.

My hotel, North Gate by Jetwing was conveniently right next to the train station so no need to deal with the tuk-tuk guys. At 11,000 rupees (without breakfast) I felt like it was overpriced for the size of the room and hotel facilities. My friend @Wonderboyjeremy stayed at a nearby hotel that was much cheaper and was just as good as mine.

Our first mission was to explore for food outside of our hotels. We went searching for seafood but somehow ended up at some local vegetarian joint where we ate some stale Dosa.

Our exploration of Jaffna by foot eventually led us to Jaffna Fort which is amazingly free to enter. Tourism is so low in Jaffna that they haven't yet though about screwing over the foreigners with absurd ticket prices like they do in places like Sigirya and Horton Plains National Park.

Apart from a few that came off the train I didn't see another white face the whole day. Although Jaffna is easily accessible by train from Colombo, it doesn't fit in well with a typical tourist's itinerary. Especially if they are either limited by time. You would have to take another 6-9 hour train journey back to Colombo before taking another 7 hour train journey to somewhere like Ella or Sigiriya. It seemed that every bus only went to Colombo too. We tried and failed to find a bus to Kandy.

I found Jaffna to be a peaceful and relaxing city to explore by foot. There's no touts harassing you and no scammers targeting tourists, just genuine people going about their everyday lives.

At the end of the day I did get that Jaffna Seafood Curry and was feeling pretty good about the day's adventures.

Fresh King Coconut in Jaffna, Sri Lanka ????????

This type of yellow coconuts are called King Coconuts and are also known as Thambili in Sri Lanka. I've only ever seen these in Sri Lanka and the south of India.

These coconuts are very popular in Sri Lanka and highly valued for their refreshing and nutrient-rich water. King coconuts are typically harvested when they are young, as they contain more water than mature coconuts.

Compared to regular coconuts, King coconuts have a bright orange outer shell that is softer and more pliable than the tough brown shell of regular coconuts. The water inside King coconuts is also sweeter and less acidic than that of regular coconuts. Additionally, King coconuts contain a higher amount of electrolytes, making them an excellent source of hydration for people who are engaging in physical activities or suffering from dehydration. The flesh of the King coconut is also softer and more jelly-like than the meat of regular coconuts, making it a popular ingredient in local desserts and beverages.

SRI LANKA | Nobody Visits This City ????????

Introducing you to a new city in the north part of Sri Lanka where not many people visit for several reasons. First of all, it is very far away from everything else - you need 8 hours bus ride from Colombo. Also, the area is less developed in comparison with other regions in Sri Lanka. Also north part of Sri Lanka was a hotspot for the recent civil war in the country.

Regardless of anything else I loved my time in Jaffna and made several videos to share with you! In this video I am sharing my interactions with the locals with no cuts - enjoy! Davud

FOREIGNER'S VISITING JAFFNA, SRI LANKA!

In today's video, we said yes to the 5 hour drive north to the city of Jaffna.

After spending nearly 2 months in predominantly the Sinhala speaking regions, we got a taste of what the Tamil culture feels like.

Whilst in Jaffna, we sampled plenty of local food (that has similarities to the South Indian cuisine), embraced the Hindu religion whilst attending the Nallur Temple and cooled off in a freshwater natural springs located next to the sea.
