Italy: Beautiful Lake Como and Bellagio
We take a ferry across the magnificent Lake Como. Passing by Villa del Balbianello, where the ending scene in James Bond: Casino Royale and one of the Star Wars movies were filmed (you can take a tour, but we were there on one of the days it was closed!) and float by Villa Carlotta. We end by walking through gardens of Giardini di Villa Melzi on Bellagio. Make sure to get a lemon drink after the gardens. And, we still don't know where George Clooney's house is.

Beautiful Bellagio - the pearl of Lake Como, Italy. Bellagio is a picturesque small village on Lake Como and probably the most popular and visited one by tourists. Bellagio is famous for its beautiful lakefront villas, charming steep alleys and numerous shops and cafes.
The old town of Bellagio has one main road, Via Giuseppe Garibaldi with plenty of small shops and gelaterias. Here you can find Piazza della Chiesa and admire the Basilica of San Giacomo, a Romanesque church built between the 11th and 12th centuries.
Don't miss to see the amazing Villa Serbelloni - a luxury five star hotel built in the 15th century and currently owned by the Rockefeller Foundation.
Another beautiful villa you should visit is Villa Melzi.
Villa Melzi d’Eril was created as the summer residence of Francesco Melzi d’Eril, vice president of the Italian Republic that was founded by Napoleon in the early 1800s.
The villa is not open to the public, but you can visit the spectacular botanical garden, the small chapel and a museum which exhibits Napoleonic memorabilia, evidence of Duke Francesco Melzi d’Eril’s loyalty to Napoleon.
Bellagio is just 15 min ferry ride from famous Varenna. Como is one hour fast service and 2,5 hour regular service from Bellagio by ferry.

Short History of Bellagio :
Bellagio was already famous in the Roman era
Its enchanting and strategic position has written its history
Holidays in Bellagio date back to ancient history.
The first person to leave a record of his stays in this spot was Pliny the Younger in the first century A.D. He owned two villas on the lake where he combined studying and writing with hunting and fishing. Over the centuries, the strategic position at the centre of the lake made Bellagio important enough to be the object of contention many times.
For a long period during medieval times, the village was dominated by nearby Como, but in 1100, it was already a free commune with its own court. However, in 1154, Frederick Barbarossa brought it under allegiance to Como once more. In the 13th century, Bellagio became part of the Duchy of Milan under the Visconti family. The town was responsible for the surveillance of the lake, and for this reason the Magistrate known as ‘Capitano del Lario’, was armed with two boats, each with twenty oarsmen and sixty soldiers, which he used to patrol the waters against piracy and smugglers.
The town of Bellagio extends from 229 meters. Above sea level up to 1686 meters. height of the top of Mount San Primo and is divided into 22 hamlets.

Italy offers a wonderful series of lakes, which have always attracted tourists and visitors. These ancient glacial lakes vary from the great expanses of Lake Garda (370 sq. km) to the tiny lakes of Olginate and Segrino (less than a single square kilometer each).
Lake Como is the richest of Italy’s three major lakes in terms of charm and culture. Its unmistakable upturned Y shape was carved out by a glacier that was forced to split into two by the mountain that stood in its path. The lake offers the visitor the longest and most indented coastline of all the Italian lakes (170 km) as well as some of the most delightful natural, architectural gems of the entire peninsular.
Lake Como is a true oasis of beauty where history, art, culture and nature merge to create a unique harmony in the world.

Welcome to Lake Como, one of the most beautiful and romantic destinations in all of Italy. Nestled in the foothills of the Italian Alps, this stunning lake is a favorite among locals and visitors alike, offering breathtaking scenery, charming towns, and world-class cuisine.
Lake Como is the third largest lake in Italy, stretching over 56 square miles, and surrounded by steep, forested hills and snow-capped peaks. Its deep, clear waters have inspired artists, writers, and musicians for centuries. With its mild climate and stunning natural beauty, Lake Como has become a popular vacation spot for people from around the world.
SUGGESTED TRIP ITINERARY
Day 1: Arrival in Varenna and Lake Como Boat Tour
Morning: Arrive in Varenna and check into your accommodation. Easily accessible by train via Milan, Varenna is a charming and picturesque town with colorful houses and narrow alleys. Enjoy a traditional Italian breakfast in one of the local cafes.
Afternoon: Take a boat tour on Lake Como to explore the stunning scenery and charming villages along the lake's shores. The boat tour will take you to Bellagio, Menaggio, and Tremezzo, where you can enjoy the beautiful villas and gardens. You can also stop for a swim in the crystal-clear waters of the lake.
Evening: Return to Varenna and enjoy a delicious dinner in one of the local restaurants. Try some of the local specialties.
Day 2: Explore Varenna, Vezio Castle, Villa Monastero
Morning: Start your day with a leisurely breakfast and then explore the town of Varenna. Visit the Church of San Giorgio and admire the stunning views of the lake from the churchyard. Stroll through the narrow alleys and admire the colorful houses and flower-filled balconies. Then head over to Villa Monastero, a beautiful villa and botanical garden located just a short walk from the center of the village. The villa dates back to the 12th century and has been owned by several prominent families over the centuries.
Afternoon: Take a hike to Vezio Castle, a medieval fortress perched on a hill overlooking the lake. The hike will take you through olive groves and ancient woods. Once you reach the castle, you can explore the ruins and enjoy the breathtaking views of the lake and the surrounding mountains.
Evening: Enjoy dinner in Varenna at one of the local restaurants. Try some of the local wines and enjoy the charming atmosphere of the town. Take a walk by the lakeshore and take in the quiet serenity of the lake.
Day 3: Day Trip to Bellagio
Morning: Take a ferry to Bellagio, one of the most beautiful and charming towns on Lake Como. The ferry ride will take you along the lake's shores, where you can admire the stunning villas and gardens.
Afternoon: Explore the town of Bellagio, with its narrow alleys, elegant boutiques, and charming cafes. Visit the Villa Melzi, a beautiful villa and garden that dates back to the 19th century. You can also take a hike to Punta Spartivento, a panoramic viewpoint that offers stunning views of the lake and the Alps.

Beautiful VILLA DEL BALBIANELLO / Lake Como / Italy (4K)
The beautiful Villa del Balbianello is known for its scenic terraced gardens and stunning views of Isola Comacina and the western shore of Lake Como. It's the setting for several movies, including James Bond - Casino Royale, Star Wars Episode II: Attack of the Clones, and A Month by the Lake.
Villa del Balbianello is located near the town of Lenno from where you can get a taxiboat for a short ride or walk 1km through a park.
You can buy tickets to see only the gardens or you can join a guided tour to see the interiors.
The whole complex consists of two residential buildings, a church, and a portico that overlooks a little dock. The main building of Villa del Balbianello hosts some English and French furnishings, which date back to the 17th and 18th centuries.
The villa was built in 1787 for Cardinal Angelo Maria Durini who set out to create the most beautiful garden on the Tremezzo Riviera.
In 1976 the property was bought by the famous explorer Count Guido Monzino who dedicated much effort to restoring the house and its grounds. The upper floor of the villa is dedicated to him and his life.
Today, the villa belongs to FAI (a fund for the preservation of the environment ) and is home to private events such as weddings, ceremonies and even film or photographic sets.

Lake Como Day Trip! - Varenna & Bellagio | Lake Como, Italy | Full Tour

If you’re staying in Milan, taking a day trip to visit Lake Como can be a very easy trip via train. We took the train from Milan Centrale and The trip took about an hour and 15 minutes to the Varenna-Essino Perledo stop in Varenna, Lake Como.
We went to Varenna & Bellagio. The ferry was 18 Euro for a round trip, and it was a quick really nice ride.
The Gelato we had in Bellagio was some of the best, and we got it from “Gelateria del Borgo,” definitely worth the hike up the stairs.
In Varenna we ate at :
and not only was the food good, we had the risotto and lake fish, but the view is incredible.

Lake Como, also known as Lario, is the third largest Italian lake (after Lake Garda and Lake Maggiore). Located at the foot of the Alps, Lake Como offers some of the most romantic and picturesque sceneries in the world.
Its characteristic shape, resembling an inverted Y, comes from the melting of glaciers combined with the erosive action of the ancient Adda river. This led to the formation of the two southern branches that culminate in the cities of Como and Lecco, in the middle of which lies the famous Bellagio. Short History of Bellagio :
Bellagio was already famous in the Roman era
Its enchanting and strategic position has written its history
Holidays in Bellagio date back to ancient history.
The first person to leave a record of his stays in this spot was Pliny the Younger in the first century A.D. He owned two villas on the lake where he combined studying and writing with hunting and fishing. Over the centuries, the strategic position at the centre of the lake made Bellagio important enough to be the object of contention many times.
For a long period during medieval times, the village was dominated by nearby Como, but in 1100, it was already a free commune with its own court. However, in 1154, Frederick Barbarossa brought it under allegiance to Como once more. In the 13th century, Bellagio became part of the Duchy of Milan under the Visconti family. The town was responsible for the surveillance of the lake, and for this reason the Magistrate known as ‘Capitano del Lario’, was armed with two boats, each with twenty oarsmen and sixty soldiers, which he used to patrol the waters against piracy and smugglers.
The town of Bellagio extends from 229 meters. Above sea level up to 1686 meters. height of the top of Mount San Primo and is divided into 22 hamlets.

From dawn to sunset, when the sky is full of stars, a flow of emotions and experiences: breakfast by the lake lulled by the gentle waves, walk in the shade of the ancient arcades, visits to gardens and villas, sports activities and new art and culinary experiences .
Italy offers a wonderful series of lakes, which have always attracted tourists and visitors. These ancient glacial lakes vary from the great expanses of Lake Garda (370 sq. km) to the tiny lakes of Olginate and Segrino (less than a single square kilometer each).
Lake Como is the richest of Italy’s three major lakes in terms of charm and culture. Its unmistakable upturned Y shape was carved out by a glacier that was forced to split into two by the mountain that stood in its path. The lake offers the visitor the longest and most indented coastline of all the Italian lakes (170 km) as well as some of the most delightful natural, architectural gems of the entire peninsular.
Lake Como is a true oasis of beauty where history, art, culture and nature merge to create a unique harmony in the world.
