Istiklal Street Istanbul Walking Tour 2019 | Walking in Istanbul

This Istanbul Walk was filmed February 2019. The sun made us a nice surprise and was shining warm over Istanbul. I left home early and could luckily arrange some time for a short walk on the Istiklal Street (İstiklâl Caddesi) in Istanbul Beyoğlu district. Please note that this is not a full walk of the Street, which would start from the Taksim Square. I started walking from the middle of the Istiklal Avenue, a place which is called Galatasaray. But on this video you will see the Istiklal Street quite empty, because it was made in the morning hours. For me it is the best time to enjoy this historical street.

A detailed Full Istanbul Walk on the İstiklâl Street will come soon. I am also preparing a Beyoğlu Istiklal Street Guide, which will give you detailed information about separate historical buildings and their functions, restaurants and street food, shops and cultural activities. The first video is already made and will be online soon.

When it comes to Istiklal Street (Istiklal Avenue), it is a must for all travelers in Istanbul. Located in the Taksim neighborhood of the Beyoglu district, Istiklal Avenue, once known as Grande Rue de Pera, is one of the most popular streets in Istanbul and without a doubt, is one of the most popular meeting points, a center for leisure activities and beautiful streets in Istanbul. Istiklal means “Independence” in Turkish.
Istiklal Street is the busiest street in Istanbul. And, every single day and night, in both summer and winter, on any hour of the day you can always see a flood of both locals and tourists here. It is situated within the district of Beyoglu, formerly called Pera, which is the center of arts and culture.
stiklal Street runs all the way from the Taksim Square, northern end, and ends at the Tunel Square, southern end, which leads to Galipdede Street and than to famous Galata Mevlevihanesi (Dervish Lodge) with its historic gate and if you go further downhill, to famous Galata Tower. On the half way, there is a break on the Galatarasay square.

Istiklal Street is lined with 19th century former palaces, mansions and embassies which are now home to high street brands. It is just as busy at night with numerous great shops, bars, cafes, discos, clubs and restaurants. It’s said that up to a million people walk up or down through Istiklal Street every single day.
The French Consulate building is a beautiful one situated just at the beginning of the Istiklal Street, on the right. It is also a cultural center offering French lessons, events and festivals throughout the year. There is also a Armenian Catholic Surp Voskeperan Church located behind the consulate.
Nevizade is a popular street and night time entertainment area that is situated at the back of the Flower Passage, in the middle of Istiklal Street, where visitors may enjoy the lively atmosphere of its narrow streets with eateries, cafes, fish restaurants, meyhanes, dining places and more.

Situated right beside the Flower Passage, the Fish Market (Balik Pazari) is a historical market area and a place that you may have an impressive culinary experience. There are variety of stands selling delicious street food like midye dolma (rice-stuffed mussels), midye tava (mussels fried in sizzling oil), kokorec (seasoned intestines from mutton or lamb that are skewered and grilled) and more. And if you go further into the market, you may find variety of shops selling vegetables, fruits, caviar, fish and more.

Located in the historic Beyoğlu (Pera) district, it is an elegant pedestrian street, 1.4 kilometres (0.87 mi) long, which houses boutiques, music stores, bookstores, art galleries, cinemas, theatres, libraries, cafés, pubs, nightclubs with live music, historical patisseries, chocolateries and restaurants.

The avenue, surrounded by late Ottoman era buildings (mostly from the 19th and early 20th centuries) that were designed with the Neo-Classical, Neo-Gothic, Renaissance Revival, Beaux-Arts, Art Nouveau and First Turkish National Architecture styles; as well as a few Art Deco style buildings from the early years of the Turkish Republic, and a number of more recent examples of modern architecture; starts from the northern end of Galata (the medieval Genoese quarter) at Tünel Square and ultimately leads up to Taksim Square.

Many dignitarie, intellectuals and affluent people visit this cosmpolitan street for hanging out.After Turkish war of independence in 1923, this avenue was renamed to Istiklal Caddesi or Independence Avenue. This street was neglected place till late 1970s but it got its fair bit of renovation by 1990 and was transformed into what it is now.
People have love and hate relationship with this bustling street which runs from Taksim Square to landmark Galata Tower. This place is a microcosm of Istanbul where you can find from food chains to higher end shopping malls

Together with the churches of St. Mary Draperis (also on Istiklal Avenue), and of SS. Peter and Paul in Galata, it was one of three Levantine parishes in Beyoglu. Today it is run by Italian priests. Saturday Mass in Italian begins at 19:00; Sunday Mass in Polish is at 9:30, in English at 10:00 and at 17:00 in Turkish; and Tuesday Mass in Turkish begins at 11:00. Weekday Masses are in English at 8:00.

The original Church of St. Anthony of Padua was built in 1725 by the Italian community of Istanbul, but was later demolished and replaced with the current building which was constructed on the same site. The current basilican church, along with the adjacent residential buildings (known as the St. Antoine Apartmanları) was built between 1906 and 1912 in Venetian Neo-Gothic style, again by the city's Italian community (mostly made up of people of Genoese and Venetian descent, the community amounted to about 40,000 at the start of the 20th century). The building was designed by the Levantine architect Giulio Mongeri, who also designed other important buildings in Turkey, such as the Maçka Palas in Nişantaşı and the Neo-Byzantine Karaköy Palas bank building in Karaköy (Galata), Istanbul, as well as the first headquarters of the Türkiye İş Bankası in Ankara.

Çiçek Pasajı, Istiklal Street No. 172, just northeast of Galatasaray Square, is a long narrow courtyard within a historic building. The courtyard is lined with restaurants offering generally good food (including seafood) in pleasant surroundings.

Nevizade Sokak is chock full of meyhanes (Turkish tavernas) serving good food and copious booze at outdoor tables in a bright, active, noisy atmosphere.

Istiklal Street (İstiklal Caddesi) is a pedestrianized street in the Beyoğlu district of Istanbul. It’s one of the most popular places in the city for both tourists and locals.
The street runs for 1.4 kilometers from Taksim Square to Tünel and is lined with shops, restaurants, cafés, museums, theatres, cinemas, libraries, churches, and consulates. Several of the buildings were constructed in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
On September 6 and 7, 1955, Istiklal Street witnessed the anti-Greek Istanbul pogrom. Greek-owned shops and churches were pillaged, tombs were vandalized, women were raped, and cars were wrecked all over the city, but the epicenter was on Istiklal Street. The riots were secretly organized by the Turkish government, who falsely claimed that a Greek had bombed the Turkish consulate in Thessaloniki, Greece, which also happened to be the birthplace of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk in 1881. It was a dark period in Turkish history and accelerated the emigration of ethnic Greeks from Turkey.
In the 1970s and 1980s, many of the street’s original inhabitants left. Migrants from rural areas of Anatolia took their place and it became a seedy area full of bars and bordellos.
In the late 1980s and early 1990s, Istiklal Street was renovated and completely pedestrianized. Several historic buildings were restored and new restaurants and shops opened. Its charm and popularity were restored and it became a lively destination once again.
