Israel : Dream of the Future

Israel: Crossroads of Civilizations and Cultures

This documentary, directed by Pierre Brouwers, dives into the heart of Israel, a small yet profoundly westernized country positioned uniquely on the geopolitical map of the Near East. Exploring its necessity to fight for existence, defense, and development, the film uncovers the rich historical tapestry of a region that has been a pivotal crossroads for major civilizations, leading religions, and significant commercial and cultural flows enriching European, Arabic, and Asian worlds. Through extensive travels across the land—from the vibrant streets of Tel Aviv and ancient ports of Jaffa to the serene landscapes of the Dead Sea and the historic fortifications of Massada—Brouwers captures the essence of Israel's incredible vitality and diversity. Highlighting the country's intense immigration, commitment to preserving the past, and determination to shape its future, the documentary presents a comprehensive view of Israel's unique blend of history, culture, and innovation, set against the backdrop of its natural beauty and strategic locations like Jerusalem, the Golan wine region, and the Negev desert.

BOOKS ABOUT ISRAEL BY TODD FINK:

Israel . . . Land of the Bible . . . Land of Faith . . . the Holy Land, revered throughout recorded history as the cradle of monotheistic religion. For a person of faith whose beliefs are rooted in the Bible, there is no place on earth like the Holy Land. In this narrow strip of land lies the source of religious belief of much of mankind. Here, amongst the barren hills and fertile plains, man’s spirit learned to soar and from here a new message went out to all the world: “. . . and many peoples shall come, and say, “Come, let us go up to the Mountain of the Lord, to the House of the God of Jacob; that He may teach us His ways and that we may walk in His paths. For out of Zion (Hill next to Jerusalem) will go forth the law, and the word of the Lord from Jerusalem (Isaiah 2:3,4).
The unique factor about the Holy Land is its special location in the World. Situated as it is, straddling the divide between Africa and Asia, the area has almost always been a battleground. Wave after wave of conquerors poured into it, anxious to control the strategic trade routes linking the centers of the ancient world. It’s not by accident that it’s virtually in the center of the world. In God’s master plan of creation, He decided to place Israel exactly in the center of His creation. Located on a tiny land bridge between Africa and Asia, there is no other way to get between the two of them except through Israel. It’s located on the crossroads of the world. Whoever wanted to trade between the two continents, or control the known world, had to conquer and control Israel. For this reason, there have been more wars and events that have taken place in Israel than any other country on earth. God positioned Israel in its unique location in order to influence the world and be on “Center Stage” so all of creation would know that He alone is God.
For nearly 2,000 years, Christian visitors from all over the world have come to the Holy Land, the land of their spiritual heritage. With Bible in hand, they have walked the places Jesus walked and prayed in the places He preached and prayed. For Christians, Israel is a place like no other. It provides them a one of a kind opportunity to experience the land of the Bible, to deepen their faith, and to be spiritually transformed for a lifetime.

BOOKS ABOUT ISRAEL BY TODD FINK:

Location
1. The Valley of Elah is about 15 miles (23 km.) west of Bethlehem and about 20 miles (32 km.) east of the Mediterranean Sea.
2. It’s located on the western edge of the Judean lower hills and was an important travel route from the coastal cities up to the center of the land of Judah and its main cities of Bethlehem, Jerusalem, and Hebron.
3. It’s an undeveloped site that can be seen in its natural state. It has parking alongside Hwy 38.
4. The Valley of Elah is best known for the epic battle between young David and the giant Goliath, a skilled veteran warrior.

Historical Background
1. The Philistines were a Canaanite people who inhabited Israel before the Israelites arrived.
2. The Israelites were unable to conquer them, and there were battles between the two nations for much of Israel’s history.
3. The Philistine’s stronghold was on the coastal plane in the Gaza area.
4. They were powerful, cultured, and possessed iron. They were the high-tech people of the day and did all they could to prohibit Israel from gaining iron and access to their technology (1 Sam. 13:19).
5. They worshipped many false gods, among them was the worship of Baal.
6. At this time in Israel’s history, the Philistines were attempting to push up through the Valley of Elah towards the heart of Judah. King Saul and his army engaged with the Philistines here to stop them.
7. The battle was one of the most pivotal between the two nations with the loser agreeing to serve the winner. It was a “winner takes all” kind of battle.
8. Later in King Saul’s life, he would be killed by the Philistines in the Gilboa area.
9. David would eventually subdue the Philistines, and during the time of Solomon, there was peace between the two nations.
10. David was probably around 16–18 years old when he fought Goliath. We'll see this as the story unfolds.

Places of Interest
1. Israelite Camp
2. Philistine Camp at Ephes-dammin
3. Valley of Elah
4. Tel Azekah
5. Tel Socoh (Socho)
6. HaEla Stream (where David selected 5 smooth stones)
7. Battle Location
8. King David’s Palace (built when David became King as a memorial to his victory)

Bible Passage: 1 Samuel 17:1–51

Faith Lesson from the Valley of Elah
1. The outcome of the battle was far more significant than we might realize. If the Israelites lost, they would become the servants of the Philistines. It was a “winner takes all” battle.
2. David’s motivation in the battle was the glory of God and the protection of His name. “So that all the earth may know that there is a God in Israel” (1 Sam. 17:46).
3. During David’s youth as a shepherd, he developed many skills. He learned music, how to write, use a sling, how to fight to protect his sheep, and how to love the Lord and obey Him.
4. God used David’s skill of using a sling, along with his love for the Lord, to defeat Goliath.
5. The skills David developed as a youth he used throughout his life. He faithfully led the nation Israel, he instilled a love for the Lord in his kingdom, and he wrote many Psalms that were not only used in his day but throughout history to this day.
6. David knew that it’s not the size of our weapons but the size of our faith in God that matters. He went into the battle full of faith, and confident God would give him the victory.
7. Do I understand that it’s my responsibility to develop my abilities, and it’s God’s responsibility to direct me in how I use them?
8. Do I realize that the most important skill I possess is my love for the Lord and my heart to obey Him?
9. What miracles might God want to do in my life that would show the whole earth that there is a God in the land?

Rick Steves on Israel and Palestine Today

In the last month, I’ve traveled to both Denver and Palo Alto to share my experiences in the Holy Land and help raise money for Bright Stars of Bethlehem, a nonprofit that promotes peace and justice in Palestine through Bethlehem’s Dar al-Kalima University of Arts & Culture. Policymaking in the US and the Middle East has been impulsive and erratic lately, making it more important than ever for American citizens to reach out and gain a little context on the Holy Land — and that was the focus of my talk.

I put this report together after traveling to the Holy Land to produce a public television special, which you can stream at — but I’d say it’s more important to watch this hour-long talk, recorded at Grace Lutheran Church in Palo Alto. While the production is simple, the content is both timely and important.

We don’t need a one-sided narrative about the Holy Land told by someone dug-in on this complicated issue. To understand this situation, we need a “dual-narrative” approach that respects both sides. And that was what I shared in this talk: the lessons I learned by walking with caring people on both sides of the wall that divides this land.

The Dead Sea in the Bible
There are many mentions of the Dead Sea in the Bible, and it has long been associated with mysticism, wonderment, and religious significance.
1. It appears the area around the Dead Sea was lush and well-watered before God destroyed the area with fire and brimstone (Genesis 13:10).
2. It appears that after God destroyed the area, it changed to the state it is today, a dry, barren desert (Deuteronomy 29:23).
3. It is referenced often to describe the borders of Israel (Numbers 34:12).
4. It was a densely populated area during the time of Abraham before God destroyed the area (Genesis 14:1-3).
5. Sodom and Gomorrah, along with the other cities of the valley, were wicked, sinful people (Genesis 18:20–21).
6. God destroys Sodom and Gomorrah (Genesis 19:23–29).
7. The slopes of Mount Sodom are located in the southeast corner of the Dead Sea, and they feature salt formations that look like pillars – which are traditionally referred to as Lot’s wife.
8. The Bible talks about how this area will change during the Millennial Reign of Christ on earth after the Great Tribulation Period (Ezekiel 47:7-11; Zechariah 14:8-9).

Egypt: The WORST Country I Ever Visited – My WARNING to Future Travelers

When I visited Egypt, I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I was very excited to witness ancient Egypt, I've always been fascinated by the pyramids and their construction. From exploring the top ten sites, from the pyramids of Giza, the Giant Sphinx, Temple of Luxor, Temple of Karnak, avenue of Sphinxes, to the valley of kings and queens we explored it all in this travel vlog. From dangerous cities to sketchy neighborhoods, I experienced it all. In this video, I share my journey and the lessons I learned along the way. I was sad to see travelers exploited from the second they arrived in the airport. Constant solicitation and scammers take away from once a magical place. I don't even know how to begin to describe the animal cruelty I witnessed. From Cairo to Luxor there wasn't much of a difference, but I can definitely recommend Luxor over Cairo. This is my warning to all future travelers: tread lightly, and be prepared for anything!
