The World's Northernmost Town | Longyearbyen, Svalbard

The Greatest High Arctic Town in the World! Longyearbyen (Svalbard) - A Cultural Travel Guide

At over 78 degrees north, Longyearbyen is the last substantial settlement before the North Pole and the main administrative centre of the Svalbard archipelago. Once a tough mining town, it is now a centre for scientific research as well as a prime tourism destination. It provides a home to over 50 nationalities, taking advantage of the visa free rules enshrined in the Svalbard Treaty. Most of the conveniences of a modern Norwegian town are present, but with the significant added pressure of a location in a polar bear environment and the hardship of 84 days of darkness in winter.

In this film I am indebted to the contribution of Katie Herlingshaw and also the kindness of Stuart Thomson in providing added photography.

What is Longyearbyen like?
Who can live in Longyearbyen?
Where is Longyearbyen?
What to see in Longyearbyen?
What is the best cafe in Longyearbyen?

Answers to all these questions and more!

Exploring an Abandoned Soviet Town in the Arctic (Barentsburg)

✅ Watch BTS of this story:
???? Get My Top 100 Travel Pics FREE!

Did you know that there is an abandoned Russian settlement in the Arctic called Barentsburg? Wait until you see this story, it will blow your mind!!

I had to take a 2-hour boat ride from Longyearbyen (the biggest town in Svalbard) which is under Norwegian control, over to Barentsburg (the second-biggest town in Svalbard) which is under Russian control.

The two towns could not be any more different.

After visiting 169 countries and more than 500 cities, I find Barentsburg to be the absolute most bizarre town in the world.

It was purchased by the Soviet Union about 90 years ago from the Dutch because of the on-site coal mine... While there are about 400 Russian & Ukrainian miners still working here today, it's a failing business, and it's obvious that Russia keeps this place alive because they want a presence in the Arctic (think natural resources, trade routes, etc).

Walking around Barentsburg gave me flash backs to North Korea. Abandoned buildings. Seemingly staged people and culture. I still can't quite wrap my head around this!

If you enjoyed this video, please share it! It's one of my top 10 favorites of all time.

Barentsburg - a piece of Russia in the Far North

Far away in the North there is a small, inconspicuous settlement hidden between the icy mountains and fjords of Spitsbergen. Barentsburg - a little piece of Russia on Svalbard; an extraordinary place, where the present and the past become one. A dream town for anyone craving for silence and a moment of simple solitude.
All material was shot during my Arctic excursion on Spitsbergen, in early September 2015.

Around the World | Guided tour at Barentsburg

At the roof of the world, lays the Norwegian archipelago Svalbard, Spitsbergen or Spitzbergen: depending on where you live and thus how you call it. Here in the Netherlands, we call it Spitsbergen. While it appears to be close to the north pole, it is actually only halfway between the north pole and the northern coast of Norway. This means that the area is ice-free and snow free in the summer.

This short video is a guide tour through Barentsburg, a small Russian village bought from the Dutch. The guide is a person that lives in Barentsburg and give a short guide tour and you will hear the Russian version of the history of Svalbard. According to our guide, for example, Svalbard was discovered by Russia rather then the Dutch.

Explore the Fascinating Soviet-Era Mining Towns of Barentsburg and Pyramiden in Svalbard

Embark on an Arctic adventure to the captivating Soviet-era mining towns of Barentsburg and Pyramiden in Svalbard. These two unique Arctic settlements are a must-visit and can be experienced in a single day trip from Longyearbyen. Their rich Soviet and Russian heritage adds a distinctive charm to the experience, as both towns are renowned by their Russian names: Пирамида (Pyramiden) and Баренцбург (Barentsburg).

Located approximately 800 miles from the North Pole, on the island of Spitzbergen, Barentsburg and Pyramiden offer an intriguing glimpse into the past and present of Arctic life. An Arctic Explorer expedition takes you first to Barentsburg in the morning and then to Pyramiden in the afternoon, providing an immersive encounter with these historical gems.

Barentsburg, now an active Russian coal mining town, boasts the distinction of being the northernmost inhabited place on Earth. Immerse yourself in its unique atmosphere and enjoy a stay at Barentsburg's exclusive hotel. Be sure to indulge in the renowned 78 degrees cocktail at the second northernmost brewery in the world, adding a flavorful touch to your visit.

Meanwhile, Pyramiden, a Soviet-era mining town abandoned in 1998, stands as a fascinating testament to history. Once the world's northernmost human settlement, it lies merely 800 miles from the North Pole. Today, this abandoned ghost town draws adventurous souls who are eager to explore its well-preserved remnants. The extreme Arctic conditions have contributed to its remarkable preservation.

Delve into the experience further by choosing to stay at the only hotel in Pyramiden—an unforgettable opportunity for daring travelers. April is an especially thrilling time to visit, as Svalbard Polar Bears begin to awaken from their hibernation. The area becomes a hub of Polar Bear activity, making it an unparalleled adventure.

Barentsburg 2017

#svalbard #barentsburg #snowmobiletour
Barentsburg is a Russian settlement in Spitsbergen, the largest among Svalbard Islands. Actually property of Artikugol, an oil company, it has been renewed in last years. Less than one thousand people live there, mostly mine workers with their families.
No roads to reach the town, from Longyearbyean you must travel by boat in summer and by snowmobile in winter.
And winter, probably, or early in Spring are the best periods for a visit, when snow covers everything in a touch of elegance. In the settlement there is a school for children, a beautiful sport center, the Pomor museum and some other historical and modern buildings. For those who want to stay overnight there is a comfortable hotel. There is also an orthodox church made in wood, a gift of Norway to remember the victims of an air crash in 1996.

Barentsburg is a must while traveling in Svalbard for its particular location on a beautiful fjord and for its strange atmosphere, a mix between vintage Soviet soul and modernity.
Moreover, if you choose to travel in winter (and this is what I suggest), the trip from Longyearbyen will offer you some wonderful landscapes you'll never forget.

If weather is not too bad, of course. As it happened to us in March 2017.
This film is a brief summery of that excursion to Barentsburg, leaving Longyearbyen under a snowy sky, climbing Longyear pass in the fog, crossing some incredible valleys till the sea where clouds opened for a short period to show us the best views.
To come back, late in the afternoon, it was really hard. A sort of challenge against snowfall and critical visibility. I had to stop footage because my action cam was iced. We arrived late in the evening after 120 kilometers ride, completely exhausted but really happy.

Special thanks to Knut, our guide from Poli Arctici. We were all absolute beginners for the Arctic and he helped us to overcome all difficulties.
Special thanks to Lorenzo e Kate Casini, it was a great luck for us to meet them in Svalbard. Some footage and photos are theirs.

#Andy1803 #svalbard #barentsburg

Footage are from Olympus OM-D EM5 MKII, Eken H8R and a GoPro4. Photos are shot with Nikon D3100 and Sony A6000.
Post-production and editing with Cyberlink PowerDirector 12.
Map is obtained with my Suunto Traverse and Suunto Movescout app.

This is one of my first YouTube film. I had no experience when I did it, nor on the field, neither in post-production. I chose a playlist for soundtrack not royalty free. I beg your pardon for this but this is not a commercial film and I didn't earn anything in doing or publishing it.

World From Above | Barentsburg

At the roof of the world, lays the Norwegian archipelago Svalbard, Spitsbergen or Spitzbergen: depending on where you live and thus how you call it. While it appears to be close to the north pole, it is actually only halfway between the north pole and the northern coast of Norway. Its land is mainly covered by Glaciers and some small towns including Barentsburg.

Barentsburg is a small Russian village bought from the Dutch and was first named Rijpsburg. This village, while it feels as Russian, is actually in Norway and hence Norwegian law's are in place. Having a Russian village is Norway is possible as all countries in the world can open an mine as citizens of signatory countries have equal rights to exploit natural resources. Currently, only norway and Russia are mining and most likely at a lose. The drone footage was shot during a short trip to Barentsburg.
