Travel Insurance Tips: 7 Things to Know Before You Buy

Should you insure your next trip? Do you really need travel insurance? These are questions I’ve been getting more often due to the recent pandemic and I will take some time in this video to answer those questions about travel insurance. The reason to buy travel insurance can be simply put: Travel Insurance minimizes the financial risks associated with travel.

Does it make sense for you?
For some people it makes financial sense. Others it doesn’t.
How willing are you to take risks? How much if peace of mind worth for you?
If your potential loss is a few hundred dollars in airfare, travel insurance is probably not worth the cost or aggravation. On the other hand, a once-in-a-lifetime $20,000 vacation is worth protecting.

Types of Travel Insurance:
Trip cancellation: Refund if you cancel due to a covered reason. CORONAVIRUS TYPICALLY ISN’T ONE.
Trip interruption: Refund for the rest of your trip if you have to return home
Trip delay: Refund for expenses due to a delay. Usually has to be 6 to 12 hours.
Medical: Emergency medical expenses on the trip. Optional: Medical Transport
Death/Dismemberment:
Baggage: Lost, Stolen, Damaged, Delay
Rental Car
Change Fees
=== Less common types:
Political evacuation: Transport to the nearest safe place
Comprehensive insurance covers all of the above (plus expenses incurred if your trip is delayed, if you miss your flight, or if your tour company changes your itinerary).
Reimbursement only -- you pay first… then submit some paperwork to get your money back.
Travel alot? Look in to Annual policies

Flight delay compensation Air New Zealand

Flight delay compensation Air New Zealand -

Can you make an EU flight delay compensation claim against Air New Zealand?

The answer to this question is yes, but.

The ‘but’ relates to the fact that Air New Zealand is a non-EU flight operator.

This means that with non-EU carriers, you’ll only be able to claim for flight delays that departed from an UK airport (this includes all EU airports).

So as Air New Zealand are not an EU operator, you will NOT be able to claim for Air New Zealand flights arriving TO the UK (plus all EU airports) where they have been delayed, whether or not the delay is more than three hours.

Rules for making a valid flight delay compensation claim against Air New Zealand?
- The flight arrival must be more than 3 hours late from the scheduled arrival time. Also, remember, this only applies for flights departing from the UK (or other EU airports) on Air New Zealand, not on those that arrive TO the UK. For departing flights, the destination does not matter.
- The amount of compensation is then affected by the distance travelled. The compensation you could be entitled to can be anything from €250 to €600. Or for cancelled flights or denied boarding the amount of the claim ranges from €125 to €600. The amount you receive will depend on the distance travelled and the amount of the delay where you chose to take the replacement flight.
- Due to the fact that Air New Zealand tend to fly to long-haul destinations, where a delay has occurred that satisfies the EU flight delay rules, your flight delay compensation is likely to be to the higher end of the scale.
- The delay must be the fault of Air New Zealand. Reasons that would be the fault of Air New Zealand would include crew of sick or late arrival of the crew, technical faults with the aircraft and where the delayed arrival of the inbound aircraft impacts the outbound flight. In each of these cases, where Air New Zealand didn’t have adequate backup plans, which then caused the flight to be delayed, compensation may become due to you.
- Flight delays caused as a result of bad weather, erupting volcanoes, strikes, bird strikes and political unrest would not be the fault of Air New Zealand. This would mean that a compensation claim against Air New Zealand could not be made in this instance.
- Flight delays on Air New Zealand from the UK within the last 6 years (in Scotland 5 years), are covered by these rules.

What about what Air New Zealand’s policy about flight delay claims for compensation?

Before making a claim for flight delay compensation, some people worry about the airline’s policy with reference to flight delays, cancellations and denied boarding. However, it is not the company’s policy that governs the amount of compensation and whether a claim is valid or not. Whether or not the claim would be successful, which in this case is in regards to Air New Zealand, this is down to the EU law 261/2004, not their policy on this.

Follow Air New Zealand’s procedure for compensation claims yes, but ultimately all airlines are bound by these rules.

But how do you make a flight delay or flight cancellation claim against Air New Zealand?

To make your Air New Zealand compensation claim, you either write to Air New Zealand. You’ll find their address details on their website. Or complete their online forms. Provide evidence for your delayed flight with them, plus your flight number. It’s a good idea to include a copy of your boarding card with your compensation letter.

Alternatively, you engage the services of an expert company which has a legal department who are experts on flight delay compensation claims, cancelled flight compensation claims and denied boarding compensation claims. A professional company that gets flight delay compensation claims from airlines day-in-day-out. They will write to Air New Zealand on your behalf. This is more often done on a no win no fee basis, which means there’s no risk to you. In this case, they only get paid when you receive your compensation.

For details on engaging an expert option to make a flight delay compensation claim against Air New Zealand, please follow this link. This also applies for claims for cancellations and for denied boarding too -
