ROAD TRIP MIDDLE EAST: Iran (Part 3 - Yazd, Isfahan)

Welcome back to the next part of my journey as I travel through Iran, filming my experience as a tourist, sharing with you the kindness of Iranian people. This time, I go from Shiraz to Yazd and then up north to the beautiful city of Isfahan. In this episode, we rent a car and drive to the magnificent historical ruins of Persepolis. I sleep in a little ecolodge homestay called Nartitee in the mudbrick village of Taft. The next day, I explore Yazd, a former centre for Zoroastrianism, and meet a sweet local girl and her mother. The adventure continues as our road trip takes us up to Isfahan - a sophisticated cultured city with inspiring architecture and history. We stay in the home of a kind local couple and I speak with their son, Amir, who is a professor at a university in Isfahan.
I continue to see examples of the kindness of strangers, Persian hospitality and signs that this population truly wants peace and friendship with the rest of the world. I hope that in sharing this journey with you, I can give you some insight into their hearts and connect this troubled but beautiful country with humanity.

IRAN: Country and people

A fascinating journey of the famous traveler Valery Shanin and his friends on Iran in the framework of the project World without visas. Iran is a unique country. In the opinion of UNESCO specialists it is included in the list of three countries with the wealthiest cultural and historical heritage. And at the same time it is not included in TOP 100 on number of tourists. The reason is evident — image of “country of evil”. But one may reject prejudices and look at Iran with his own eyes.

We leave our bakery and continue to cycle along the Caspian Sea. We keep getting surprised by people from passing cars or along the road who stop us just to take a picture or to give something small. We also very much enjoy the beautiful nature, especially on some parts off the main road and closer to the mountains. And we reach an important milestone...

This is Strait of Razianeh or Strait of Razianeh in iIlam province. I brought you another world. Fennel Strait or in the local term the Strait of Wishes has been eroded due to severe erosion. If you do not have the opportunity and you can not take a fennel stalk or fennel tag, I took you, the only very important point is the Strait of Razianeh is that in no way when it rains do not enter the fennel stalk because it kills 100 percent. You have no escape route. I hope you enjoy watching this part of Strait of Razianeh or Fennel Strait in Ilam province. You really went to Fennel Strait.

Student Speaker Competition - Seyyed Hatam Tamimi Sa'd - Not official TEDx Talk-TEDxPurdueUSalon

Disclaimer: This is not an official TEDxPurdueU. This is for TEDx use. It is an application students used to compete for the opportunity to give a talk at our official TEDxPurdueU Main Event.

Hatam did eventually give an official talk. This will be available soon.

Almost sixty years ago, a 20-year-old man named Hanash living in a small farming town named Sadat Tawaher in southwest Iran lost his hearing. Since Hanash had not gone to school, he had no reading or writing literacy and thus writing was not an option for communication with him. There was no deaf school in Sadat Tawaher or nearby, either. The solution that Hanash’s family members came up with to communicate with him was simple but creative: they decided to gesture to him! In linguistic studies, this rare phenomenon is referred to as homesign: gestural communication systems that emerge in families with deaf members but with no access or exposure to sign language or deaf education. Over the decades, Hanash’s family’s ‘gesture system’ has now evolved into a homesign that exhibits many characteristic features of a fully-fledged independent language. Having used this homesign for six decades, signers can do a wide range of linguistic functions, from making statements to asking questions, to refusing others’ statements, to discussing hypothetical situations and telling jokes, stories, and lies, to name but a few. What is unique about this homesign is that, despite their lack of access to any other sign language, Hanash’s family created a sign language that surprisingly resembles other sign languages like American Sign Language in many ways. This story provides a novel insight into the natural emergence and development of language without any explicit educational intervention from the outside world.

Laughing and Talking with Iranian Youth

I noticed a group of young people and got one of our translators to help facilitate a dialog. Though we didn't understand most of what the other was saying, we all felt connected to each other through the laughter. This is the extended cut from a shorter clip that I took from the end with their message of oneness. I did later get a better translation from some of my Iranian viewers about what was being said.
