هَمِدان، هَمَدان یا به گویش محلی هِمِدان یکی از کلان‌شهرهای ایران در منطقهٔ غربی و کوهستانی ایران و مرکز شهرستان و استان همدان است. این شهر در دامنهٔ کوه الوند و در بلندای ۱٬۷۴۱ متری از سطح دریا واقع شده‌است و از شهرهای سردسیر ایران به‌شمار می‌آید. همدان قدیمی‌ترین شهر ایران و از کهن‌ترین شهرهای جهان است.

Hamedan has a green mountainous area in the foothills of the 3,574-meter Alvand Mountain, in the midwest part of Iran. The city is 1,850 meters above sea level.
The special nature of this old city and its historic sites attract tourists during the summer to this city, located approximately 360 kilometres (220 miles) southwest of Tehran.
The major sights of this city are the Ganj Nameh inscription, the Avicenna monument and the Baba Taher monument. The majority of the population is Persian; however, there is a considerable Azerbaijani minority.

در سال ۱۳۸۵ مجلس شورای اسلامی در مصوبه‌ای همدان را «پایتخت تاریخ و تمدن ایران» اعلام کرد.
همدان اولین پایتخت نخستین شاهنشاهی ایران، مادها بوده‌است.
با این حال قدیمی‌ترین آثار یافت‌شده از محوطهٔ باستانی هگمتانه و نیز کتیبه‌های گنج‌نامه مربوط به دوران هخامنشیان هستند. همچنین این شهر در روزگار هخامنشیان، اشکانیان، ساسانیان، آل بویه و سلجوقیان نیز یکی از پایتخت‌های کشور بوده‌است. هم‌اکنون استان همدان به دلیل داشتن مراکز تاریخی و دیدنی به عنوان پنجمین شهر فرهنگی و توریستی کشور شناخته می‌شود و از نظر علمی نیز با وجود مراکز دانشگاه بوعلی سینا، دانشگاه صنعتی همدان، دانشگاه آزاد اسلامی همدان، دانشگاه پیام نور همدان و مراکز دیگر، به عنوان یکی از قطب‌های دانشگاهی کشور شناخته شده‌است.
آرامگاه بوعلی سینا نماد شهر همدان و همچنین یکی از نمادهای پیشینهٔ ایران در فرهنگ جهان و دانش و علم به‌شمار می‌رود.

Hamadan Hegmatane Hill:
In the mud beneath this scraggy low hill lies Hamadan’s ancient Median and Achaemenid city site. Small sections of the total area have been fitfully excavated by several teams over the last century, most extensively in the 1990s. The most interesting of several shed-covered ‘trenches’ allows you to walk above the excavations of earthen walls using plank walkways on wobbly scaffolding. The walls’ gold and silver coatings are long gone of course and it’s hard to envisage the lumpy remnants as having once constituted one of the world’s great cities. A nicely presented museum tries to fill the mental gap, showing some of the archaeological finds including large amphorae, Seljuk fountains, Achaemenid pillar-bases and Parthian coffins.
A few decades ago when the government relocated inhabitants from the hill and demolished their homes in the name of archaeology, they spared a pair of 19th-century churches , which remain at the southern edge of the site.

Hamadan province lies in a temperate mountainous region to the east of Zagros. The vast plains of the north and northeast of the province are influenced by strong winds, that almost last throughout the year.The various air currents of this region are: the north and north west winds of the spring and winter seasons, which are usually humid and bring rainfall. The west-east air currents that blow in the autumn, and the local winds that develop due to difference in air-pressure between the elevated areas and the plains, like the blind wind of the Asad Abad region.
According to the survey of 1997, the population of Hamadan province was 1,677,957. Based on official statistics of 1997, the population of Hamadan county was 563,444 people. the majority population are Persians and Hamadan has a sizeable minority of Azeris, and a small group of Jews.
Hamadan is home to many poets and cultural celebrities. The city is also said to be among the world's oldest continuously inhabited cities.
Hamadan has always been well known for handicrafts like leather, ceramic, and carpets.
Iran's Cultural Heritage Organization lists 207 sites of historical and cultural significance in the city of Hamadan alone.
A tomb believed by some to hold the remains of tomb the biblical Esther and her cousin Mordechai is located in Hamadan.
The scientist and writer known in the west as Avicenna (Abu Ali Sina) is buried in Hamadan. The 11th-century Iranian poet Baba Taher is also interred in Hamadan.Wikipedia

The Ali Sadr Cave غار علی صدر originally called Ali Saadr or Ali Saard (meaning cold) is the world's largest water cave which attracts thousands of visitors every year.
It is located in Ali Sadr Kabudarahang County about 100 kilometers north of Hamadan, western Iran (more accurately at 48°18'E 35°18'N). Because of the cave's proximity to large cities such as Hamadan, it is a highly recommended destination for tourists from all corners of the world. Tours of the cave are available by pedalos.

هَمِدان، یا به گویش محلی هِمِدان یکی از کلان‌شهرهای ایران در منطقهٔ غربی و کوهستانی ایران و مرکز شهرستان و استان همدان است. این شهر در دامنهٔ کوه الوند و در بلندای ۱٬۷۴۱ متری از سطح دریا واقع شده‌است و از شهرهای سردسیر ایران به‌شمار می‌آید. همدان قدیمی‌ترین شهر ایران و از کهن‌ترین شهرهای جهان است. در سال ۱۳۸۵ مجلس شورای اسلامی در مصوبه‌ای همدان را «پایتخت تاریخ و تمدن ایران» اعلام کرد. همدان اولین پایتخت نخستین شاهنشاهی ایران، مادها بوده‌است. با این حال قدیمی‌ترین آثار یافت‌شده از محوطهٔ باستانی هگمتانه و نیز کتیبه‌های گنج‌نامه مربوط به دوران هخامنشیان هستند. همچنین این شهر در روزگار هخامنشیان، اشکانیان، ساسانیان، آل بویه و سلجوقیان نیز یکی از پایتخت‌های کشور بوده‌است. هم‌اکنون استان همدان به دلیل داشتن مراکز تاریخی و دیدنی به عنوان پنجمین شهر فرهنگی و گردشگری کشور شناخته می‌شود و از نظر علمی نیز با وجود مراکز دانشگاه بوعلی سینا، دانشگاه صنعتی همدان، دانشگاه آزاد اسلامی واحد همدان، دانشگاه پیام نور همدان و مراکز دیگر، به عنوان یکی از قطب‌های دانشگاهی کشور شناخته شده‌است. آرامگاه بوعلی‌سینا نماد شهر همدان و همچنین یکی از نمادهای پیشینهٔ ایران در فرهنگ جهان و دانش و علم به‌شمار می‌رود.
نخستین باری که اسم این شهر برده شد، در حدود ۱۱۰۰ سال پیش از میلاد بود که نام همدان را اَمدانه ذکر شده‌است. این شهر تحت نام‌های دیگری از قبیل هگمتانه، هگمتان، اکباتان، اکباتانا، آمدانه، آنادانا نیز نوشته شده‌است. در کتیبه‌های آرامی نو آشوریی نام آن شهر آمدانه آمده، این اسم بایستی مشتق از کلمهٔ ماد باشد چنان‌که آشوریان قوم ماد را آمادای ذکر کرده‌اند. از این رو آمادانه به معنی محل مادها و جایی‌است که مادها زندگی می‌کردند در دوران مادها به زبان پارسی باستان این شهر هگمتانه یا هگمتانه به معنی «جای تجمع» خوانده می‌شد. اکباتان نیز همان تلفظ هگمتانه به زبان یونانی است.نام هگمتانه به مرور زمان در دوران ساسانیان به اَهمتان، اَهمدان و سپس به همدان دگرگون شده‌است.همدان به گویش محلی هِمِدان خوانده می‌شود.
همدان در روزگار، ماد، هخامنشیان، اشکانیان، ساسانیان، آل بویه و سلجوقیان یکی از پایتخت‌های کشور بوده‌است
این شهر از لحاظ جمعیت چهاردهمین شهر پرجمعیت ایران به‌شمار می‌آید و در مرداد سال ۱۳۸۸ به عنوان یکی از کلان‌شهرهای ایران معرفی شد. در سال‌های ۱۳۰۰ تا ۱۳۰۴ خورشیدی مهندس آلمانی کارل فریش طرحی مدرن را برای همدان طراحی کرد که از نوع نقشه‌های شعاعی محسوب می‌شود اما امروزه به دلیل تراکم جمعیت و طرح شعاعی، ترافیک مرکز شهر بسیار زیاد است. به این میدان ۶ خیابان اصلی شهر وصل شده‌اند. شهرداری همدان در میدان آرامگاه بوعلی قرار دارد.

آتشکده (ارگ) نوشیجان به عنوان قدیمی‌ترین نیایشگاه خشتی دنیا از دوران مادها به جای مانده است. این بنای تاریخی بعنوان اصلی ترین و قدیمی ترین الگوی معماری ایرانی نیز مطرح است.
این ارگ در استان همدان، شهرستان ملایر و در روستای شوشاب واقع شده است.
