Introduction To Ethiopian Food and Coffee | Injera, Shiro Wot and More

Ever wondered what Ethiopian food and coffee was like? I put together this food guide after spending several weeks there, from busy Addis Ababa to quiet villages.

I'm a huge lover of Ethiopian food and in this video I'm going to introduce you to a few staples. This is by no means a list of all the incredible dishes the country has to offer - Ethiopian cooking is extremely varied. Instead I'm going to give you an overview of a few things you'll find on the menu of every Ethiopian restaurant.

Our basic introduction to Ethiopian cuisine starts with shiro and will introduce you to other classics like beyaynetu, firfir and of course the ubiquitous injera. But it doesn't stop there - I've also included several drinks! We'll talk about Ethiopian coffee, beer, tej and even Ambo - a very special carbonated water the locals love.

I'm vegan so I've not included popular dishes like doro wat, a chicken stew, or kitfo, which is raw minced meat. But now that you know they exist you'll be able to check them out elsewhere if you'd like! :D

Have you ever tried Ethiopian food? Or have you only ever seen it in videos where people eat Ethiopian food for the first time? There really is nothing quite like it - unless you've eaten Eritrean food which shares a lot of similarities. Let me know how you enjoyed it. What's your favourite Ethiopian dish?

The Ultimate ETHIOPIAN FOOD TOUR - Street Food and Restaurants in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia!

Thank you to Go Addis Tours ( for taking me on this amazing ultimate food and market tour of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Ethiopia is one of my favorite countries in the world for food and travel, and this was my second time to visit, and I was eager to explore and eat as much as possible.

We started early, 5 am in the morning and Go Addis Tours picked me up to start at the wholesale market. Even though the city is still sleeping, Addis Mercato is buzzing from 3 am when trucks full of produce from all over Ethiopia, sell them at the market in Addis Ababa. You’ll find all the ingredients, and massive amounts, that you need to cooking Ethiopian food. It was a good warm up, to get to know some of the ingredients, before starting the day eating Ethiopian food.

We had coffee, and breakfast, both of which were excellent. Later after visiting another market, Dessie took me to his neighborhood to eat shiro wat, one of the greatest of all Ethiopian foods, a thick and rich chickpea stew. I’ve had shiro wat many times before, but never have I seen it fully prepared right in front of me. The shiro was incredibly good, piled onto a bed of injera, and we also ordered fir fir, a mashup of injera, simmered with tomato sauce and berbere.

Next we headed to a fish restaurant in Addis Ababa. Ethiopia is landlocked, so all fish is freshwater. We ordered fried fish, and asa lebleb, a mixture of fish sauteed with spices and herbs. Both were excellent, but the asa lebleb was the highlight because it was so flavorful.

Next Ethiopian food meal we went to one of the longtime classic restaurants to eat one of the best platters of beyaynetu in Addis Ababa. Beyaynetu is a mix of vegetarian dishes. It was again, a delicious meal, I especially love the tomato salad there.

For our final meal of the day, and to finish off this extreme Ethiopian food tour, we went to one of the most well known and best quality meat restaurants in Addis Ababa to eat tere siga - raw meat. You are served a variety of chunks of raw beef, delicately sliced. Then you slice it into bite sized pieces on your own, wrap in injera, and dip into chili sauce before taking a bite. It’s awesome. The fried meat version is also very good.

This was an amazing day, and an amazing Ethiopian food tour in Addis Ababa. Thank you Go Addis Tours!

????????Food in Addis | Things to do in Addis

So this vlog was entirely about Food in Addis Ababa. Now the video I made didn't do the food justice, a lot of the food was amazing its just that I only had my really heavy camera and my temporary phone's camera because my other phone (with better video quality) is broken. My favourite food in Addis was actually Kitfo, then Fatteh/Fetteh, Shiro came in at the 3rd spot. To be honest the Kitfo made me sick but it tasted pretty good so I'm sure it was just my stomach readjusting to Ethiopian food. Another thing to note was that injera came with almost every meal that I ate. So those visiting at this time of year should get accustomed to lots of injera with shiro. The Food in Addis Ababa vlog everyone, hope you like it.

BEST FOOD OF ETHIOPIA - Tibs, Shiro, Doro Wet and More!

Exploring the Ethiopian Cuisine on our own, it took quite some time to know all the ins and outs of Shiro, Tibs, Wet and Injera. But in the end, we had a pretty good understanding. Most Ethiopian dishes have the Injera sourdough bread. You get it in the morning as Firfir/Fitfit (Fir-Fir / Fit-Fit), which is Injera soaked in berbere sauce and butter. You get it with Tibs (Tips, Tibbes) and also with the vegetarian fasting plate (Yetsom Beyaynetu).
Shiro and Tibs are the staples you get at every restaurant. Shiro is mashed beans or chickpeas with some tomatoes and onions with added berbere sauce. At its best, it is served in a small pot and is still boiling creating a great experience for a rather simple dish.
Tibs is the more expensive dish since it contains meat, actually, it is mainly meat. Bite-sized stripes of sautéed meat with some onions and chili pepper. Apparently, there are different styles, mainly different in the meat used (beef, lamb, goat). It is slightly spicy most of the time and is always served with chili paste.
Ethiopia is also a country of coffee. The drink is celebrated and brings people together. You will find small ceremony tables and chairs all around the cities. Coffee is cheap and is prepared in a special way to get all the aromas and none of the bitter tastes. It is super cheap and a great way to relax and observe the woman or men prepare it. But actually, tea is also super great! Black tea is prepared with seasoned water. The spices used are cinnamon, cardamom, and cloves. It gets a great taste which enhances the black tea aroma.
Join us as we travel around Ethiopia and show you Shiro, Tibs and Doro Wet in Gondor, Lalibela and Addis Abeba!

Ethiopian cuisine (Amharic) characteristically consists of vegetable and often very spicy meat dishes. This is usually in the form of wat, a thick stew, served atop injera, a large sourdough flatbread, which is about 50 centimeters (20 inches) in diameter and made out of fermented teff flour.Ethiopians eat most of the time with their right hands, using pieces of injera to pick up bites of entrées and side dishes.
