Cameroon: WAZA NATIONAL PARK

Waza National Park was initially formed as a hunting reserve in 1934. Later, in 1968, it was made a national park, and in 1979, a UNESCO biosphere reserve. The Waza National Park has a surface area of 17,000 square kilometers and is known for its Sahel and savannah vegetation.

Waza National Park is one of the most significant parks in Africa and the most famous wildlife park in Cameroon's capital city. It is also the only park where you can observe endangered creatures.

Waza National Park is reportedly the most stunning and spectacular wildlife refuge in West Africa.
It's also one of the ten parks and reserves where the big five lions, elephants, rhinoceroses, leopards, and buffaloes can be found, which Cameroon takes great pride in. This Park contains one of Africa's best-preserved rainforest portions

Cameroon
Country in Central Africa
Cameroon, on the Gulf of Guinea, is a Central African country of varied terrain and wildlife. Its inland capital, Yaoundé, and its biggest city, the seaport Douala, are transit points to ecotourism sites as well as beach resorts like Kribi – near the Chutes de la Lobé waterfalls, which plunge directly into the sea – and Limbe, where the Limbe Wildlife Centre houses rescued primates. ― Google

Yaoundé
Capital of Cameroon
Yaoundé, spread over 7 hills, is the capital city of Cameroon. It is in the southern part of the country. The 20th-century Notre Dame des Victoires cathedral has a striking triangular roof. Nearby, in the Lake Quarter, the former presidential palace is home to the National Museum, with cultural exhibits such as masks and sculptures. Farther west, Mvog-Betsi Zoo is home to primates rescued from the bushmeat trade. ― Google

Climbing Mount Cameroon, Cameroon Day 1

I know what you're thinking... Yesterday you had a big crash on your scooter, and today you're going to climb the highest mountain in Western Africa? Are you high?? Well, the truth is that I felt better when I woke up and didn't want to postpone. But after a little bit of climbing I realized it was a mistake. Still, you've got to press on. Climbing Mount Cameroon was a top my bucket list for the region, so I didn't want to miss the opportunity.
The hike up Mount Cameroon isn't easy. It doesn't mess around with switchback or anything like that. It's essentially just straight up the mountain. It doesn't help either that I've managed to pull my groin this morning too. I'm out of shape.
Still, Mount Cameroon is absolutely breath-taking and I wish I were in better shape to really appreciate it rather than just feeling like I'm about to die.
Tomorrow, I summit the mountain... stay tuned.

Mefou National Park in Yaounde, Cameroon

Mefou National Park, also known as Mefou Wildlife Sanctuary and Mfou Reserve, is a national park and zoo in the forested area of Mfou in Cameroon. Within it, Mefou Primate Park is used as a shelter for primates that are native to Africa: the monkey, chimpanzee and gorilla.
Ape Action Africa established the sanctuary to house primates which were housed at the Mvog-Betsi Zoo at Yaoundé. Eventually, it would act to protect primates that were affected by illegal pet and bushmeat trades in the country.
A 45-minute drive south of Yaoundé, Mefou is run by Ape Action Africa, an organisation established to protect primates in Cameroon. Well-informed guides will show you gorillas, drills, chimps and mandrills living in beautiful natural surrounds, all rescued from the bushmeat trade. A taxi to the park from Yaoundé costs around CFA50,000; call ahead if it's rainy to check if the park's open.
In 2010, the shelter's manager, Colonel Avi Sivan, was killed in a helicopter crash.

View from Mount Cameroon

A view from the Summit of Mt. Cameroon. Video was taken in Dec 2013 which is the dry season in Cameroon. Summit was windy but not as cold as expected. Evidently there is ice during the rainy season which makes the hike up there in that particular season very difficult

A la decouverte du Mont Fako, Cameroun

A tourist going up Mount Fako in Cameroon will be amazed at the wonderful scenery. Mount Cameroon national park has animals you would never imagine existed there. Tourists can also now sleep in warmth and bathe with warm water in the lodges powered 24 hours by solar energy.

Day 2 Hiking the Trail up Mount Cameroon, Cameroon

Today the hike up Mount Cameroon continued, and it didn't get any easier. Sure, it wasn't nearly as steep as my first day climbing the mountain, but the altitude, my sore groin, the fact that I just crashed a scooter 2 days prior, and my being completely out of shape has made it very difficult. Honestly, by the time I reach the summit of Mount Cameroon, I could care less that I'm there. I take some photos and start booking it back down the mountain.
On the decent down Mount Cameroon, we head across lava fields and through some incredible landscapes. For the most part, we only drop slightly as we circle the mountain down to a place called Mann Springs on the backside of Mount Cameroon. I'm in pain by the end of the day for sure, I'm proud of myself. I can't wait to get back down to Buey for a shower though!
Tomorrow, I finish the 3 day hike of Mount Cameroon.
