The level of plastic surgery in Korea is rated as the best in the world. The market size is $4.5 billion per year, accounting for 25% of the world's plastic surgery industry. Each year, 130,000 foreigners visit Korea's plastic surgery and dermatology clinics, and more than half of them are Chinese. Of course, it was before Covid-19 came.
The streets of Gangnam, Seoul from Apgujeong Station to Sinsa Station are full of plastic surgeons. Double eyelid surgery or Botox procedures are now very common. Many people undergo double jaw surgery, fat removal surgery, and face lifting. There are also many signs in English, Chinese and Japanese on the street. However, due to the pandemic, foreign guests were cut off. Are plastic surgeons in crisis?
Younger people use plastic surgery to look more beautiful and older people to look younger. Foreigners are often charged higher prices than locals for cosmetic surgeries in Korea, a local media outlet reported Sunday.
According to Ilyo Shinmun, four of 10 randomly selected plastic surgery clinics in Gangnam charged foreigners nearly twice as much as locals.
For breast augmentation, one clinic charged 6.6 million won ($5,870) for local patients and 12 million won for their foreign counterparts. Another clinic charged 10 million won and 17 million won for local and foreign patients, respectively, for the same breast surgery.
Both of the clinics were popular and had received patients from other countries.
The clinics attributed the price difference to the inclusion of foreigner-exclusive options, such as translation services.
According to clinic officials, foreigners who visit Korea for plastic surgery have more time-sensitive demands since they often have a limited period of stay in Korea. Since periodic postoperative checkups are difficult once they leave Korea, clinics provide them additional services like special scar care following the surgery. Officials added that non-local patients are also given priority in scheduling the surgery date.
However, foreign patients are often not given the freedom to opt out of these additional services. When asked about whether a patient could bring a personal translator from outside and be charged less, one official refused the notion and said the clinic-provided translation service is mandatory.
Lawmaker Jang Jung-sook of the National Assembly’s Education, Culture, Sports and Tourism Committee said, “However popular it has grown, cosmetic surgery tourism has given rise to many problems. Policy measures should be developed to address these problems.”
At the moment, there aren’t any legal sanctions against these discriminatory pricing practices, apart from administrative guidelines from the Health Ministry, which has no legal binding.
