When we first started van life, I (Crystal) had air conditioning as one of my non-negotiable items because I had clients and wanted to ensure I could stay in the van even during the summer heat. BUT thankfully we had a lot of people tell us to NOT install an AC unit and I am so glad we didn't! Between the cost, electrical and solar considerations, sound, leakage, and more I know we made the right decision.

How We Use Air Conditioning Off Grid! Battery Powered AC In Our VAN!
Hello Everyone!! This is our off grid, compact air conditioning setup! It is an Ecoflow Wave with 1 add on battery. It will work on that battery on full blast for 4hrs, or 8hrs on economy mode. We are charging the Ecoflow battery using a 24v step up converter coming from our 2 100ah 12v lithium batteries which are getting a charge from 300w of solar. If we were to go to a campsite, I would probably plug into shore power using our 2500w Magnum Energy Inverter / Charger, and then plug my Ecoflow Wave directly into one of our 110v outlets. This setup works awesome and if I had a chance to redo things, I would do this over again. Thanks For Watching!

Mindy and her family are currently transforming their Mitsubishi bus into a mobile home. After careful consideration when looking for an air conditioner to cool their bus in the warmer months they opted for an underbunk air conditioner instead of a rooftop unit. This decision was based on both aesthetics and the desire to preserve space for a rooftop deck on top of their bus.
They decided on the Cool-J HB9000 PLUS Underbunk Reverse Cycle Air Conditioner. This no-fuss underbunk air conditioner option provides efficient cooling or heating for vehicles up to 6.5m. Our Mitsubishi Rosa bus conversion into a tiny off grid home continues, as I enlist the help of my older brother Matthew to install the Dometic Harrier Plus Air Conditioner. The weigh of the air conditioner meant i couldn't do it alone, thus big brother to the rescue. I expected this to be a long slow process, but as it turned out we had it done in 6 hours.
