Often when people think of Europe, they think of great society; Beautiful cities, peaceful borders, and prosperity. However, as in all places of the world, Europe also knows struggle and poverty. Here, we list the ten poorest countries in Europe by way of Gross National Income per capita.

After China, the European Union has the world’s second-largest economy. Economic prosperity, on the other hand, varies greatly between countries. Despite the fact that it is home to some of the world’s wealthiest countries, such as Luxembourg, the continent has other countries with significant levels of poverty. With a total surface area of 10,180,000km2, Europe is the world’s second smallest continent, after Australia. Europe is made up of 44 countries. During World War I and World War II, Europe’s economy suffered greatly. During the Cold War, many central and eastern European countries succumbed to Russian pressure and established COMECON (Council for Mutual Economic Assistance). The United States provided significant funding to most of the other countries that chose a free-market approach. Many western European countries banded together to join the European Union in order to integrate their economies, boosting cross-border trade and improving their economy, whereas COMECON countries continue to struggle. The GDP (Gross Domestic Product) per capita measures the average wealth of each country’s citizens. It is calculated by dividing the country’s gross domestic product (GDP) by the total population, adjusted for inflation.

Having stayed in multiple different villages on my previous travels, I was inspired to do the same in Belarus. I reached out to several Belarusians and got the wonderful opportunity to visit Krupitsa village after meeting Ira through Couchsurfing. The past few days in Antananarivo, Madagascar have been overwhelming, intense and eye-opening. And I apologize for the delays in posting these videos -- it's been nearly impossible to find decent enough wifi.
Madagascar, as a whole, is a beautiful tropical island with stunning greenery, giant baobab trees and unique wildlife (like lemurs!). It's also massive -- about twice the size of my home state of Arizona -- floating 250 miles off the southeastern part of mainland Africa.
But putting the natural beauty aside, Madagascar is one of the World's poorest countries, with the 5th lowest GDP per capita. Walking on the streets of Antananarivo, I couldn't help but observe and analyze what I was seeing --- people just barely managing to survive, working labor-intensive jobs with very little pay.
My new local friends and I took a mini road trip to some outer villages, where I learned about the daily life of people working in the markets. Here's what I discovered.
If there's any takeaway from today (and through travel in general) -- it is to appreciate the life I live. If you are reading this as well, consider yourself lucky because you have internet, which most of the people in Madagascar cannot afford.

Adventures in Europe's Poorest Country (Nicer than you might expect) ????????
Chișinău, Moldova isn't exactly on Europe's tourist trail...
As the poorest capital in the poorest nation in Europe, this city often gets a bad rap. Though it is indisputably associated with stories of human trafficking, rampant prostitution, and Soviet-era corruption, there is much more that Chișinău has to offer to the keen observer. Look deeper and you'll find the capital of a country that is safe, pleasant, with the surrounding regions home to some of the best (and often most-overlooked) wineries in Europe.
Is it a sleepy capital? Due to its size, it would be hard not to be sleepy. But I definitely enjoyed my short time in this city, experiencing the generosity of its people, its verdant parks and squares, and some of the best coffee and cafes in eastern Europe. Is it worth visiting? Absolutely! And you'd better book your trip before too many people discover this place.

My second day in the capital of Moldova brought me to the vibrant Piața Centrală (Central Market), a bustling maze of vendors bursting at the seams with fresh honey, cheese, local delicacies, fruits, vegetables, meats, and every household good under the sun. Wandering this market is an adventure in itself; this is Moldovan culture, up close and personal, with the bounty of the entire country at your fingertips.
The market is as vibrant and colorful as an African or southeast Asian market, and you'd be hard-pressed to run out of things to do here. Grab a glass of cold-as-ice Kvass (bread soda), scarf down a local pastry, and dive right into the web of consumerist chaos that you'll encounter at Chisinau's largest market. This was the highlight of my trip to Moldova, and you'll quickly see why...
