Inside Norway's $47 Billion Floating Highway

Norway is Building a $47 BILLION Floating Highway! o_O'

Norway is a land of contrasts, from snow-capped mountains to lush green valleys and alpine tundras to breathtaking fjords. It has a natural beauty that the Norwegians strive to preserve.
However, like every other country, Norway must progress and the natural beauty they treasure is also an obstacle that has hindered them, until now.

Norway is a long and thin country that is mainly coastline, this means that to travel the 700 miles from Kristiansand in the south to Trondheim in the north takes 21 hours, that’s an average speed of around 30mph! It also uses 7 different ferries and over $200 in fuel, making the transport of materials and goods a long and costly process.

They are working to change this, How?....by building the” e39 coastal highway”.
This $47 billion project is designed to cut travel costs and time in half.
The idea is to build a coastal highway that consists of bridges and tunnels to create a more direct route and allow higher average speed to be maintained.
Due to the extreme weather experienced in Norway, bridges and tunnels aren’t always the best option, high winds can be dangerous to bridges and the sheer width they have to span in some cases make them impractical. Tunnels can be drilled when the fjord isn’t too deep but the wider the fjord is, the deeper it is, which makes them impractical too.
The solution? Floating Tunnels!.... Yes, FLOATING TUNNELS.

These S.F.T.Bs or submerged floating tube bridges are designed to balance the weight of the tunnel with its buoyancy so the tunnel can literally float below the surface. Cables attached to the sea bed or to floating pontoons will secure them and the tunnels will be sunk to a sufficient depth so as not to be in danger of collision from boats or ships.

These tunnels will have emergency exits, lights, and phones at various intervals as well as their own dedicated emergency services in case of a breakdown or accident.

The project is estimated to cost $47 billion although some estimate it to be closer to $90 billion to finish the project. Once finished, tolls will be charged for the first 20 years to cover the costs.
While this project may seem extravagant and expensive the estimated benefits to commerce and tourism are far superior!
I mean who doesn’t want to drive through a floating tunnel?

China's longest underwater highway tunnel opens the Taihu tunnel

After nearly four years of construction, China's longest underwater highway tunnel is now open to vehicle traffic.

At a length of 10.79 kilometers (6.65 miles), the Taihu tunnel stretches under Lake Taihu in eastern China's Jiangsu Province, about 50 kilometers east of Shanghai.

According to government officials in Jiangsu, the tunnel was built at a cost 9.9 billion yuan (about $1.56 billion). Construction began on January 9, 2018.

Over 2 million cubic meters of concrete were used to build the two-way tunnel, which has six lanes and is 17.45 meters wide, reports China's official news agency, Xinhua.

The ceiling of the tunnel has been outfitted with colorful LED lights, designed to prevent driver fatigue.

The tunnel is part of the 43.9-kilometer Changzhou-Wuxi Highway, which opened to the public on December 30, 2021. It provides an alternative expressway for travelers journeying between Shanghai and Nanjing, Jiangsu's capital.

Connecting the expressways of Suzhou, Wuxi and Changzhou, it was built to alleviate traffic pressure on the cities next to Lake Taihu while promoting the economic development of the cities in Yangtze River Delta area.

So how does the Taihu tunnel stack up against its global counterparts? The world's longest underway highway tunnel is Norway's 14.3-kilometer twin-road Ryfast tunnel, which runs between the city of Stavanger and the municipality of Strand.

The underwater tunnel portion of the Tokyo Bay Aqua-Line, a vehicle highway that travels under Tokyo Bay, is 9.6 kilometers.

In terms of underwater tunnels in general, though, the top honor goes to the Channel Tunnel, which connects England and France by rail. Its submerged portion runs for 37.9 kilometers, the longest of any underwater tunnel in the world.

Breathtaking road tunnel in Norway

This old road tunnel on Sørøya island in Northern Norway is equipped with a rockfall barrier around the entrance to protect against rocks falling down from the tall cliffs above. The nets that have been put up are quite solid and they are there for a reason! This kind of protection is used on many roads in Norway; but normally they tend to be a bit more discrete.

The landscape around the tunnel is quite amazing and with scenic views of fjords and mountains that you will remember for a long time. The road is located in Hasvik municipality and connects the villages Sørvær and Breivikbotn. Because the island is remote there are few tourists here and that makes the place a lot more charming than the tourist traps around Lofoten to the south. So a visit to Hasvik and Sørøya island will give good memories and a taste of the wild north:)

Sørøya (Northern Sami: Sállan, English: South island) is Norway's fourth largest island in terms of area. The 811-square-kilometre (313 sq mi) island is divided between Hasvik Municipality and Hammerfest Municipality. It is often claimed to be one of the most beautiful of the islands in Norway. In 2012, the population of the island was 1,092. The island is very rocky and mountainous. The highest point on the island is the 659-metre (2,162 ft) tall mountain Komagaksla on the southern shore of the island. The coastline is very jagged and has numerous fjords that cut inland from the open ocean. The island is surrounded by the Norwegian Sea on the north and the Sørøysundet strait to the south.

A Trip Across HARDANGERBRUA ????????The Hardanger Bridge, Norway’s longest suspension bridge

Hardangerbrua or the Hardanger Bridge is one of the longest suspension bridges in the world, and Norway’s longest suspension bridge. It is also world’s longest tunnel-to-tunnel suspension bridge.

On the south end of the bridge, cars immediately enter the 1.2-kilometre (0.75 mi) Bu Tunnel that goes under the village of Bu, while on the north side of the bridge, cars immediately enter the 7.5-kilometre (4.7 mi) Vallavik Tunnel which includes a 500-metre (1,600 ft) long segment to a roundabout inside the tunnel. At the roundabout, cars can take another 500-metre (1,600 ft) long tunnel that leads to Ulvik or they can take a 7-kilometre (4.3 mi) long tunnel to Granvin.

It is not only the country's longest suspension bridge, but also the eighth longest of this type of bridge in the whole world. The main span is 30 meters longer than the famous Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

The Hardanger bridge project had a budget of 2.3 billion kr (€290 million) and more than half of this will be paid by toll and saved ferry subsidies.

The Norwegian Administration is considering a different route over a future bridge as the main connection between East and West.

[Statens Vegvesen anbefalte i en utredning som ble lagt frem onsdag denne uken, at E134 over Haukelifjell blir en av to nye hovedveier mellom Østlandet og Vestlandet.]

Today we are telling you about the world's finest, and amazing theme. Which floats inside the ocean. To make travel easier from city to city, Norway is going to make an extremely shocking experiment.
The roads built on this tunnel make up 1,330 km Traveling up to only a few hours will be complete. It takes longer than 21 hours to decide on this journey through the ship. Norway is building a floating tunnel to connect two cities.
This tunnel combines two villages named Opodic and Lavik. The first phase of the tunnel is completed in western Norway. This tunnel is a total of 205 km long. This tunnel is the world's second longest tunnel.
This tunnel is being prepared from about 4000 feet of long concrete. There will be two lanes in this tunnel. By which the vehicles will be easily accessible. To control the position of the tunnel, two pants will be prepared on the surface of the water, there will be enough distance between them, so that ships and cruises can easily pass.
These tunnels are expected to be completed by 2035. This tunnel will be so strong that there will be no impact of any weather on this. However, this tunnel will take longer than 19 years to build.
It is believed that around $ 23 billion will be spent in this entire project. People will be quite comfortable with the construction of this bridge. The journey that they used to meet in 21 hours, the journey can be completed in a few hours.
