The Complete Louvre Part 42: The Apartments of Napoleon III

I think it only fitting that I end this 42-film series with the decorations of The Louvre’s last inhabitant: Emperor Napoleon III, the nephew of you know who. He lived in The Louvre when it also served as a museum. I’ll bet he had his own entrance. I hope you enjoyed watching this series as much as I did making it. Since this department is quite small, I’ve added a few surprises from La Tour d'Argent and Taillevent.

Bon Apetite!

Located on the right bank of the river Seine in the heart of Paris, it is the perfect example of French Baroque architecture. Best known as the home to the Mona Lisa, the museum has the most impressive art collection in the world.

The Louvre was first built as a fortress to protect Paris from Viking attacks in the 12th century. In 1546, it became home to the French monarchs. In 1789, during the French Revolution, it was decided that The Louvre would be home to the country’s art. Since then, the museum has become world-famous as the holy shrine of art.

The Louvre is home to over 3,80,000 artworks, of which only 35,000 make up the permanent exhibition. These exhibits are spread across eight departments - Egyptian Antiquities; Greek, Etruscan, and Roman Antiquities; Near Eastern Antiquities; Islamic Art; Decorative Arts; Sculpture; Paintings; Drawings and Prints.

The Louvre Palace houses the largest museum in the world. The twelfth century fortress was extended and refurbished several times throughout the centuries. Before it opened as a museum, King Charles V and Philippe II chose this palace as their residence, decorating it with their ever growing art collections.
When the Royal Family moved to Versailles, the impressive building that covers a total area of 160,000 square meters was transformed into one of the most important museums in the world.
A glass pyramid, which is currently the museum’s principle entrance, was built in the palace’s main courtyard in 1989, piercing the monotony of the Louvre's exterior.
Arguably the most famous museum in the world, the Louvre has had an interesting journey in terms of its history in Paris.

We find the Louvre in the 1st arrondissement of Paris, close to the les Halles district. It has won the award for most visited museum in the world for many consecutive years now, attracting close to 10 million visitors annually.

The buildings on this site have been occupied since 1678 by the Ministère de la Défense Nationale, which currently occupies about half of the site, along with the Army Museum and other military museums.

Napoleon's tomb is located in the garden of Les Invalides near the École Militaire in Paris called the Dôme des Invalides (The Dome). Napoleon was a much loved man that had an illustrious military career, who died at St. Helena on May 5, 1821 at the age of 51.

His coffin is laid out under a saucer-shaped vault beneath a 24-ton gilded bronze statue atop it, representing Napoleon as emperor, with an imperial crown on his head and cross in hand.

Napoleon's tomb is not the only one that lies within Les Invalides, there are also tombs of Empress Josephine Bonaparte, King Louis XVI, André-Antoine Houdon and Jean- Baptiste Lassus.

His tomb was constructed in 1840 and is located in Les Invalides in Paris, France. The construction of the tombs took approximately two decades to officially complete which occurred in 1861. Napoleon's Tomb was designed by architect Louis Visconti and sculptor James Pradier.

Address: Rue de Rivoli, 75001 Paris, France
Established: August 10, 1793

The Louvre (English: /ˈluːv(rə)/ LOOV(-rə)[2]), or the Louvre Museum (French: Musée du Louvre [myze dy luvʁ] (About this soundlisten)), is the world's largest art museum and a historic monument in Paris, France. A central landmark of the city, it is located on the Right Bank of the Seine in the city's 1st arrondissement (district or ward). Approximately 38,000 objects from prehistory to the 21st century are exhibited over an area of 72,735 square meters (782,910 square feet).[3] In 2018, the Louvre was the world's most visited art museum, receiving 10.2 million visitors.[1]

The museum is housed in the Louvre Palace, originally built as the Louvre castle in the late 12th to 13th century under Philip II. Remnants of the fortress are visible in the basement of the museum. Due to urban expansion, the fortress eventually lost its defensive function, and in 1546 Francis I converted it into the primary residence of the French Kings.[4] The building was extended many times to form the present Louvre Palace. In 1682, Louis XIV chose the Palace of Versailles for his household, leaving the Louvre primarily as a place to display the royal collection, including, from 1692, a collection of ancient Greek and Roman sculpture.[5] In 1692, the building was occupied by the Académie des Inscriptions et Belles-Lettres and the Académie Royale de Peinture et de Sculpture, which in 1699 held the first of a series of salons. The Académie remained at the Louvre for 100 years.[6] During the French Revolution, the National Assembly decreed that the Louvre should be used as a museum to display the nation's masterpieces.

The museum opened on 10 August 1793 with an exhibition of 537 paintings, the majority of the works being royal and confiscated church property. Because of structural problems with the building, the museum was closed in 1796 until 1801. The collection was increased under Napoleon and the museum was renamed Musée Napoléon, but after Napoleon's abdication, many works seized by his armies were returned to their original owners. The collection was further increased during the reigns of Louis XVIII and Charles X, and during the Second French Empire the museum gained 20,000 pieces. Holdings have grown steadily through donations and bequests since the Third Republic. The collection is divided among eight curatorial departments: Egyptian Antiquities; Near Eastern Antiquities; Greek, Etruscan and Roman Antiquities; Islamic Art; Sculpture; Decorative Arts; Paintings; Prints and Drawings.

Napoleon III Apartments, Louvre, Paris, France Walking Tour [HD 4K 60fps]

The Louvre was a palace before it became a museum. Kings, emperors, ministers and courtiers wandered its maze of hallways long before the first museum visitors arrived. And the palace’s dazzling past is best reflected in the Napoleon III Apartments.

The expansion of the Louvre under Napoleon III in the 1850s, known at the time and until the 1980s as the Nouveau Louvre or Louvre de Napoléon III, was an iconic project of the Second French Empire and a centerpiece of its ambitious transformation of Paris. Its design was initially produced by Louis Visconti and, after Visconti's death in late 1853, modified and executed by Hector Lefuel. It represented the completion of a centuries-long project, sometimes referred to as the grand dessein (grand design), to connect the old Louvre Palace around the Cour Carrée with the Tuileries Palace to the west. Following the Tuileries' arson at the end of the Paris Commune in 1871 and demolition a decade later, Napoleon III's nouveau Louvre became the eastern end of Paris's axe historique centered on the Champs-Élysées.

The project was initially intended for mixed ceremonial, museum, housing, military and administrative use, including the offices of the ministère d’Etat and ministère de la Maison de l'Empereur which after 1871 were attributed to the Finance Ministry. Since 1993, all its spaces have been used by the Louvre Museum.

[4K HDR] Walk inside Napoleon III Apartments with me #Paris ????????

This is a walking tour and 4k visit of the Louvre Museum. The Louvre is the world's largest art museum and a historic monument in Paris, France, and is best known for being the home of the Mona Lisa painted by Leonardo Da Vinci as well as Napoleon III's apartments.
The Napoleon III apartments are unique in that they have retained all the splendor of their original décor and furnishings.

Napoleon III, the nephew of Napoleon I, was the emperor of France from 1852 to 1870. Born in 1808 in Paris, France, he grew up in exile. He began his quest for to gain back the throne in 1832, writing to let his ideas be known to the people. He became the Emperor of the Second French Empire. He was the first President of France elected by a popular election.

Almost every king of France put hands in the Louvre. Adding and demolishing wings or changing the intended use of the building. Starting from Philipp August II that built a little fort on the Seine river in 1223. To Catherine ‘de Medici, that built Le Tuilerie Palace and used it as a royal residence for the first time. To Luis XIV that lived here while Versailles Castle was under construction. Until Napoleon III that lead the palace to the maximum extent, calling the whole ‘Cité Impériale’.
And the current aspect of the Louvre is due to Napoleon III himself. During his reign, in the second half of XIX century, great architect such as Louis Visconti and Hector-Martin Lefuel re-designed the palace. Until that time the Louvre complex was formed by unattached building and the half of them were in ruin because of abandonment and riots.
After Sedan defeat, in 1871, the wrath of the crowd came across Tuileries Palace that was burned and later destroyed. So, nowadays, the Sate Rooms in the wing that used to connect the old Louvre to Tuileries Palace, called Napoleon III Apartments, are the only survivors of the Napoleon III style within Louvre building.
These state rooms, even if called Napoleon III Apartments, have never been personally used by the monarch, but by his State Minister Achille Fould, that personally took care of their decoration. Napoleon III apartments open in the enormous state drawing room that encloses all the opulence of that time: gilded decorations, red damasks, and bronzes are the main decorative leitmotif. The ceiling has been frescoed by Charles-Raphael Marechal with a Napoleon III commemorative scene.
