Indonesian Street Food Tour of Glodok (Chinatown) in Jakarta - DELICIOUS Indonesia Food!

►Check out 50 of the Best Indonesian Dishes:

Glodok is the Chinatown of Jakarta, and my wife and I decided to spend the day walking around Glodok and exploring some Indonesian street food throughout the day. At the end of the day, we also stopped by Fatahillah Square, with is an old Dutch square in colonial Jakarta, where you'll find some interesting buildings and some street food snacks as well.

Since we were staying at a hotel (here’s information on the hotel I stayed at: not too far from Glodok, we decided to beat the traffic and just walk over there. It didn’t take more than 15 minutes to walk, and soon we arrived in Jakarta’s Chinatown. Glodok is a very interesting area to walk around and explore. There are fresh markets and plenty of restaurants and food to choose from.

The Indonesian street food I tried on this tour was siomay, an Indonesian Chinese dish. From the back of a motorbike, I chose a few of the siomay dumplings he had steaming, and the cut them up and added some peanut sauce to the plate. The texture was a little mushy, but they were alright. Right opposite the siomay, the owner of an Indonesian vegetarian restaurant greeted me and asked if I might like to eat some of his vegetarian food. His vegetarian rendang was particularly good.

One of the most famous places to go in Glodok is Kopi Es Tak Kie, a legendary coffee shop. After wandering around a while we found it. I had a cup of coffee and also a plate of nasi campur from outside the shop.

We continued on our Indonesian street food tour throughout Glodok and I tried a sweet snack called kue ape, which is a green colored little pancake. Next, I had a variety of deep fried snacks including fried bananas, and fried breadfruit. They are definitely pretty greasy, but interesting to sample, and they are very popular street food snacks in Indonesia.

It probably wasn’t the greatest idea to walk, but we decided to walk over to Fatahillah Square. The traffic was pretty intense, but we made it. And along with checking out the old colonial buildings one of my main goals was to try kerak telor, which is a traditional Indonesian Betawi street food snack. Luckily I found it and it turned out to be a very interesting and amazing snack to watch being made!

Here’s the list of the things we ate and the prices:

Siomay - 15,000 IDR ($1.11)
Vegetarian food - 20,000 IDR ($1.48)
Kopi Es Tak Kie - 10,000 IDR ($0.73)
Nasi campur - 35,000 IDR ($2.58)

Kue ape - 1,000 IDR ($0.07) each
Fried snacks - 12,000 ($0.88)
Kerak telor - 20,000 IDR ($1.48) - Possibly overcharged? Do you think?

Hope you enjoyed the Indonesian street food tour of Glodok and Fatahillah Square, I sure enjoyed eating it!

Jakarta Indonesia OLD Chinatown vs NEW Chinatown | Glodok & PIK Street Food Tour

Visiting Jakarta Indonesia is not complete if you don't visit Pancoran Glodok - Chinatown of Jakarta.
Whilst Glodok Pancoran is famous for Petak 9 (meaning Block 9), there is a new street food spot called Petak 6 (meaning Block 6). In this street food tour episode, we show you what to do in Jakarta, what to eat in Jakarta and where to eat in Jakarta including the hidden gems of Glodok Chinatown and PIK Pantjoran Chinatown!

Petak Enam in Glodok Chinatown is fairly new and its one of the best place to savour some traditional Indonesian food, Chinese Indonesian food and also street food. They have a lot of variety from Nasi Sapo, Nasi Campur (combination rice) from Sedap Wangi, to one of my favourite Indonesian fish cake - Pempek Palembang. There are a lot of street food vendors here, which felt like a nice cleaner establishment options if your stomach isn't trained yet for the side of the street type of vendors yet. They also have a lot of halal options which caters greatly to most of the Indonesian people here. If you are heading down to Glodok Petak 6 (Enam), it is also worth visiting Kota Tua (Old City) which has retained their Dutch history and heritage.

At night, we went to Pantjoran PIK or Pantai Indah Kapuk to explore their Chinatown, which is also fairly recent a new addition to the North Jakarta precinct. Now this Chinatown is equipped with well known retailer. Famous Indonesian street food and restaurant vendors, they even have Michelin Star Kam Roast Goose from Hong Kong. It's the perfect place if you don't know what to eat in Jakarta Indonesia because everything is basically here in one place.

If you are wondering how to go around or transportation options in Jakarta, download Grab or GoJek - ride sharing app on your mobile phone. We used Grab and GoCar around Jakarta and it was very convenient and inexpensive.

I hope you enjoy our second Jakarta vlog, more food vlog coming out in the next few weeks.

Welcome to the 4th episode of our Street Food in Indonesia series! Today we are in Jakarta, eating our way through Glodok Chinatown! Here you can find authentic Chinese restaurants and street food!

We started our day in Chinatown with Bakmi (meat + noodles) made fresh to order. Served with char siu pork (barbecued), blanched vegetables and pickles on the table, this is a satisfying bowl of noodles (Rp. 26.000 / USD $1.82).

For our next food stop, we go to a street side shop serving Kuo Tieh (pot stickers). Outside of the restaurant you can watch the chefs preparing the dumplings from scratch, starting with making and rolling the dough, stuffing the dumplings with meat and chives and then cooking them over a huge flame. The pot stickers were delicious, but slightly more expensive than we expected in Jakarta (Rp. 50.000 / USD $3.49 for 10 pieces).

Next we check out the fresh market in Glodok, which is full of traditional Chinese ingredients you normally don’t see in Indonesian wet markets. Next, we visited Dharma Bhakti Temple (Jin De Yuan) which is the first and oldest temple in Jakarta, built in 1650. It is historically significant, and very important for Chinese living in Jakarta, especially around Lunar New Year.

We wanted to experience a full meal after eating street food, so we went to a Hakka restaurant, known as the first Hakka restaurant in the city fro 1925. The owner was very friendly and recommended several dishes to us. We ordered braised noodles (Rp. 50.000 / USD $3.49), red yeast fried eel (Rp. 60.000 / USD $4.19), minced pork steamed with pickles (Rp. 80.000 / USD $5.59), pork ball soup (Rp. 15.000 / USD $1.05) and several other complimentary dishes. The food was authentic and the setting was traditional set back in the twisting alleyways of Jakarta.

Restaurant addresses:

1. Bakmi at Bakmi Loncat Elda
Jl. Kemenangan Raya No.56, RT.2/RW.1, Glodok

2. Kuo Tieh at Santong Kuotieh 68

Indonesian Street Food Tour of Glodok (Chinatown) in Jakarta - DELICIOUS Indonesia Food!

Indonesian Street Food Tour of Glodok (Chinatown) in Jakarta - DELICIOUS Indonesia Food!

Delicious Street Food in Jakarta, Indonesia Chinatown ( Glodok )

Glodok, Jakarta Chinatown is a place where you can find great Chinese and Indonesian foods. Hot & Spicy Crab, Chinese Pan Fried Dumpling ( Kuoh Tieh ), Pork Offal Stew ( Sekba ), Barbeque Port, Roast Duck, Moon Cake, Chinese Pancake ( Mi Pan ) and other delicious food.
