Surviving the Sulu Sea | Bizarre Creature Encounters in Malaysia ???????? [SE E43]

For Tim and I, diving into the ocean is like arriving on a distant planet – it’s full of strange and exotic creatures that are completely unknown to us, some of which can be quite dangerous. So as we found ourselves on the shores of the Sulu Sea, one of the most biodiverse expanses of ocean on earth, we were apprehensive to go into the waters where there were spiky and bizarre marine creatures living just below the surface.

But it was the beauty of our rustic beachside cabin in East Malaysia (a place with a view to die for) that finally drew us into the Sulu Sea. Because we might only be here once in our lives…

And so why not?

Amazing Stilt Houses of the Bajo Sea Gypsies - Rumah-rumah panggung dan perahu Gipsi Laut Bajo

We went in search of the Sea Gypsies of the Indonesian Archipelago, the Bajo Laut, having heard stories of their incredible diving and fishing skills and their lives spent living as whole families aboard tiny boats, the 'lepa' . We found a world in transition as fishing for subsistence becomes an economy, we found amazing stilt houses build in the middle of the ocean many miles from the nearest settled islands. But did we find any sea gypsies?

I traveled to the Philippines' most remote (and dangerous) island called Tawi Tawi, in search of the Badjao (Bajau) Tribe -- who can hold their breath for up to 13 minutes while free diving. Guys - I have been coming to the Philippines for the last 8 years and I've traveled to more than 50 Filipino islands - but I'm telling you that nothing compares to what I experienced in Tawi Tawi.

The Badjao (Bajau) people are so kind and genuine, despite not even having a Jollibee in their community (it's hard to find this around the country!). I hope you enjoy watching this story and I welcome any of your comments or questions in the comments below!

Also, in case you were wondering, I found multiple sources online showing that the Badjaos (Bajaus) can hold their breath for up to 13 minutes, including a National Geographic article which you can also search for on Google. It's incredibly impressive and the Badjaos (Bajaus) are true superhumans!

Thanks for watching and I'll see you guys next week with more stories in the Philippines!

Featuring the Badjau sea gypsies and the Pa-aling fishermen (Part 4 of 5)

*The segment about the Badjao - breath-taking!

This episode of Human Planet (BBC1) looks at how humans exploit the sea's riches with great ingenuity and bravery. It had some mini features about the Philippines:
The Bajau 'sea gypsies' of the Sulu Sea spend so much time on water they get 'land sick' when they set foot on the land! The dangerous world of the Pa-aling fishermen 40 metres below, where dozens of young men, breathing air through a tangled web of pipes attached to a diesel engine, capture thousands of fish in a vast net.

Sama-Bajau - The Bajau are a small refugee community found just off the coast of Malaysia who live their whole life in the ocean. They live in wooden huts on stilts and survive by catching fish, octopus and lobsters off handmade boats. The Bajau People also called as Sea Nomads or sea gypsies Of The Far East. After being banned from living on Malaysian soil because of their refugee status, the Bajau people have severed ties with the mainland, instead choosing to live a nomadic lifestyle on the open ocean.

300 Days Alone on an Island - A Robinson Crusoe Adventure in the Pacific Ocean

Welcome to our amazing adventure! In this video, we'll be joining our hero Xavier Rosset on a real-life Robinson Crusoe adventure - 300 days alone on Tofua, a remote island of the Tonga in the Pacific Ocean.

We'll follow our hero as he embarks on a daring journey of exploration, discovery, and self-reliance. He'll be completely isolated from civilization, and must use his wits and skills to survive.
We'll start by watching him build a shelter, and gathering food and supplies. Then he'll have to figure out how to catch fish and hunt animals. He'll also need to make improvised tools, and explore the island.
And we'll watch as he adjusts to life on the island; dealing with storms, loneliness, and the possibility of never being rescued. We'll see how he copes with the mental and physical struggles of living alone in the wild.
It's a remarkable story of courage and determination, a true psychological story between solitude and loneliness and hopefully it will inspire others to try their own outdoor adventures. Join us now for this amazing Robinson Crusoe adventure!

After 3 minutes, you won't be willing to leave your screen.

Ce film existe aussi en version originale française , Xavier explique dans sa langue maternelle ses souffrances et ses joies. Cette version est un peu différente de celle en anglais.

???? The ONE THING you must do in Japan:

The Escarpment, Kudat, Sabah

The Escarpment is located at the Tip of Borneo, also known as Tanjung Simpang Mengayau and is the northern most tip of Borneo; the world's third largest island.

Simpang Mengayau means 'lingering junction' as it is here that the South China Sea meets the Sulu sea flowing from the east.

The stunning waters around the Kudat district are identified as one of three priority conservation areas in Malaysia. Kudat is recognised to be globally significant and outstanding in the Indo-Pacific region for its rich mix of coral reef, mangrove and seagrass habitats and the existence of rare and endangered species such as dugong, sea otter, Irrawady dolphins, migratory species such as humpback whales and sea turtles, as well as having the only known large fishing ground and source of the majority of prawn landings in Sabah.

Sustainable tourism development is encouraged in this pristine and hugely important part of Sabah.

MAP OF THE SOUTH CHINA SEA

salutations my friends. this is a map of the south china sea. The South China Sea is a marginal sea of the Western Pacific Ocean. It is bounded in the north by the shores of South China (hence the name), in the west by the Indochinese Peninsula, in the east by the islands of Taiwan and northwestern Philippines (mainly Luzon, Mindoro and Palawan), and in the south by Borneo, eastern Sumatra and the Bangka Belitung Islands, encompassing an area of around 3,500,000 km2. It communicates with the East China Sea via the Taiwan Strait, the Philippine Sea via the Luzon Strait, the Sulu Sea via the straits around Palawan (e.g. the Mindoro and Balabac Straits), the Strait of Malacca via the Singapore Strait, and the Java Sea via the Karimata and Bangka Straits. The Gulf of Thailand and the Gulf of Tonkin are also part of the South China Sea. The shallow waters south of the Riau Islands are also known as the Natuna Sea. thats all for now. thanks for listening. please subscribe for the best maps. goodbye. The South China Sea contains over 250 small islands, atolls, cays, shoals, reefs, and sandbars, most of which have no indigenous people, many of which are naturally under water at high tide, and some of which are permanently submerged. The features are:

South China Sea
The Spratly Islands
The Paracel Islands
Pratas Island and the Vereker Banks
The Macclesfield Bank
The Scarborough Shoal
The Spratly Islands spread over an 810 by 900 km area covering some 175 identified insular features, the largest being Taiping Island (Itu Aba) at just over 1.3 kilometres (0.81 mi) long and with its highest elevation at 3.8 metres (12 ft).

The largest singular feature in the area of the Spratly Islands is a 100 kilometres (62 mi) wide seamount called Reed Tablemount, also known as Reed Bank, in the northeast of the group, separated from Palawan Island of the Philippines by the Palawan Trench. Now completely submerged, with a depth of 20 metres (66 ft), it was an island until it sank about 7,000 years ago due to the increasing sea level after the last ice age. With an area of 8,866 square kilometres (3,423 sq mi), it is one of the largest submerged atoll structures in the world.

Trade route

Millions of barrels of crude oil are traded through the South China Sea each day
The South China Sea is an extremely significant body of water in a geopolitical sense. The sea has historically been an important trade route between China, southeast Asia, and going to India and the west. A number of shipwrecks of trading ships that lie on the ocean's floor attest to a thriving trade going back centuries. Nine historic trade ships carrying ceramics dating back to the 10th century until the 19th century were excavated under Swedish engineer Sten Sjöstrand.

it is the second most used sea lane in the world, while in terms of world annual merchant fleet tonnage, over 50% passes through the Strait of Malacca, the Sunda Strait, and the Lombok Strait. Over 1.6 million m³ (10 million barrels) of crude oil a day are shipped through the Strait of Malacca, where there are regular reports of piracy, but much less frequently than before the mid-20th century.

Natural resources
The region has proven oil reserves of around 1.2 km³ (7.7 billion barrels), with an estimate of 4.5 km³ (28 billion barrels) in total. Natural gas reserves are estimated to total around 7,500 km³ (266 trillion cubic feet). A 2013 report by the U.S. Energy Information Administration raised the total estimated oil reserves to 11 billion barrels. In 2014 China began to drill for oil in waters disputed with Vietnam. The area in question is known as Vanguard Bank and which Vietnam officials claim lies within their country's 200-mile exclusive economic zone. China, however, disputes this fact.

According to studies made by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources, Philippines, this body of water holds one third of the entire world's marine biodiversity, thereby making it a very important area for the ecosystem. However the fish stocks in the area are depleted, and countries are using fishing bans as a means of asserting their sovereignty claims.

Indonesia's maritime waters have been breached by fishing fleets from Vietnam and the Philippines leading to said ships being seized and sunk by Indonesian authorities.

China announced in May 2017 a breakthrough for mining methane clathrates, when they extracted methane from hydrates in the South China Sea. #southchinasea #southchina #southchinaseanewsupdate #mapschool #mapsolo #mapas #maps

Borneo's Bajau Laut and The Disappearing Sea Gypsies in Fascinating Images

Canadian photographer Mark Lehn captured these striking images of the Bajau Laut off the coast of Sabah, Borneo. Originally from the Sulu Archipelago in the Philippines, the nomadic tribe are stateless and depend on the water. Dwindling trade and food sources means an increasing number of them are moving to the mainland for work. For some of us, owning a home by the sea is something of a dream. But for the Bajau Laut, stateless sea gypsies who live off the coast of Borneo, life on the water is just a part of who they are. Traditionally, these boat dwelling nomads are from the many islands of the Sulu Archipelago in the Philippines but many have migrated to the neighbouring area of Sabah, Borneo, due to the conflict in Muslim Mindanao. They have no citizenship and therefore no rights to public amenities or schools. The unique community have become a disappearing tribe in recent years owing to dwindling trade and food supplies. And now, an increasing number of Bajau Laut are moving closer to the mainland for work - a move that could mean an end to this way of life. Canadian photographer Mark Lehn travelled to Sabah, Borneo, in September 2015 where he captured these striking images. Lehn said: 'I think it's amazing this culture still exists in our modern society. But I do see that it's going to be very difficult for the Bajau Laut to live a traditional life at sea in the future, with so many challenges associated with being a stateless community. He added: 'Seeing these people and being the recipient of their kindness really made me appreciate some of the more simple things in life and the connection between people and our environment.'

Sipadan Island : New 7 Wonders of Nature

Sipadan is the only oceanic island in Malaysia, rising 2,000 feet or 600m from the seabed.
It is located in the Celebes Sea east of the major town of Tawau and off the coast of East Malaysia on the Island of Borneo. It was formed by living corals growing on top of an extinct volcanic cone that took thousands of years to develop. Sipadan is located at the heart of the Indo-Pacific basin, the centre of one of the richest marine habitats in the world. More than 3,000 species of fish and hundreds of coral species have been classified in this ecosystem. International voting platform for New 7 Wonders of Nature :
