Indian Arrival Day - Trinidad and Tobago
We are celebrating Indian Arrival Day on May 30th every year to celebrate and remember the Arrival of east Indian indentured laborer’s to Trinidad and the impact they had on our country, society and culture.
The first ship, the Fatel Razack, arrived in Trinidad on May 30th, 1845 carrying the first group of East Indian indentured laborers. Just imagine that trip, leaving everything you know in India, going on a ship for a few months, passing around Africa and then across the Atlantic to Trinidad
So… what impact did the migration of this large India population have on Trinidad and Tobago.
1) Religion – 2 major religions can trace their introduction to Indentured laborers from India. Hinduism and Islam. As you saw in my last video, we celebrate Eid, which is a public holiday in Trinidad and Tobago. And Hinduism is a major religion in Trinidad. The Hindu calendar is full of events and of course Diwali being the most famous.
2) Music, from the instruments, the Tassa, especially at weddings, it’s the best, the sitar, Harmonium, so much was introduced to our culture, and the music itself, from the traditional Indian music to the music that developed in Trinidad like chutney and then Soca chutney. Its common not to go a Carnival Fete and hear normal Soca and Soca Chutney and its normal.
3) Of course, I must mention the food, man the food, I miss that Trinidad flavor of food that that has a great Indian influence too it. Every Trinbagonian has a favorite roti shop, talking about roti, all the different kinds, Sada, Dhalpuri, Paratha and much more than I can recall now.
4) Indian wear, this is tied closely with religion, but as you can see, we have kept the Indian wear such as Saris, Kurtas, salwar, that is common at prayers, weddings, and other celebrations.
5) Other than cultural impact, there community of Indian descendants as organized themselves to ensure they have a positive impact on Society. There are Religious organizations such as ASJA and SDMS, there are more but these are the prominent, that goes beyond just religion. They have schools and other community outreach programs.
6) Then the words that has survived, we don’t speak the original Bhojpuri Language anymore, but you just have to pay attention to basic things, like names, from Maraj, Maharaj, Singh, Ali, Mohammed, all are common family names in Trinidad. The name of town and villages, like Barrackpore, Fyzabad, Calcutta settlement, Ramai Trace and many more. Also the name of everyday cooking utensils, instead of rolling pins, we say belna, we cook roti on a Tawa, we swizzle the Dhal using a dahl gutni… And speaking Dhal, I never grew up saying yellow split peas, we say Dhal, and Aloo for potato and baingan for eggplant.
7) And of course, the biggest impact the Indian Indentured system had on Trinidad, is people, like me. Our ancestors left their biggest mark in the descendants that are keeping the traditions and heritage alive because of their hard work in passing it down to us. And I am proud to be next in line to pass it down to the next generation.
