I head to the south of Tunisia to visit the desert town of Tataouine, which famously was the inspiration behind the name for the planet Tatooine in George Lucas' Star Wars. I then travel to an idyllic nearby village named Chenini, which proves to be the most memorable stop on my Tunisia tour.

Chenini: troglodyte cave village in Tataouine Governorate, Tunisia تطاوين‎ شنيني‎????????

Berber village of Chenini, Spa&Thalassotherapy in Djerba True Tunisia...season 2 (day 11/12)

In this episode: climb to the ancient troglodyte berber village of Chenini (11th century), a fortified ksar (granary) near Tataouine (in Star Wars, many scenes were filmed in the area and one of the moons of Tatooine is named Chenini).

Then discover Masjid of the Seven Sleepers: according to legend, they did not stop growing during their 308-years sleep and became giants; their graves measure 5 meters long.

In Djerba, it's now time to relax! Since 2004, Tunisia is the second destination in the world for spa and thalassotherapy, with high professional skills.

At Houmt El Souk, main town of the island of Djerba, YouTubers are shopping at local fish market to have a delicious meal by the sea.

It's now time for them to share their best memories and say goodbye in front of the Mediterranean sea.

Hotel Dakyanus - quick tour of Tataouine hotel in southern Tunisia (Bradt Travel Guides)

Today we take a short tour of the Hotel Dakyanus, a large property just outside the town of Tataouine in southern Tunisia. The grounds are beautiful, full of birds, and I imagine the pool would be great in summer! The rooms are also traditionally built which keeps them cool during the hot summer months. A great option for exploring this amazing governorate, which is full of ksour, dinosaurs and epic landscapes!

Exploring the Ksour (ancient hill forts) of southern Tunisia around Tataouine - Bradt Guides

Tataouine Governorate in southern Tunisia is most famous as one of the sites where George Lucas shot the original Star Wars films in the 1970s. However, it is also full of ksour: fortified granaries built by the local tribes between the eleventh and nineteenth centuries. Join me as I drive the 50km Maztouria Loop to the south-east of Tataouine and explore nine of the ksour of Jebel Abiadh (the White Mountains).

Some ksour are on mountains, some are on hilltops, a few are even on valley floors. Most are now abandoned, with a few being destroyed by French colonial forces due to local resistance to French rule. However, some of these incredible buildings have either been restored as historical sites, sites of pilgrimage for Star Wars fans or are in current use as housing, market places or even tourist accommodation!

This is the last video of my trip to Tunisia. Tunisia is a beautiful place to visit and, today I leaving the incredibly beautiful village of Shenini. I am going to another town called Tataouine in Tunisia with three Italian friends (we stayed in the same hotel in Shenini). Tataouine is a city in Tunisia. The name of the town was immortalized in Star Wars as Tatooine, but most of the filming was not done here, but at Matmata.

I was in Tunisia for 9 days. During these 9 days, I visited different cities from the North to the South of the country.
Had countless memorable experiences, ate amazing food, and saw wonderful sights and places. I am sharing all this with you through this Tunisia series blog.

Jaw dropping Tataouine, Tunisia Ksar Oualed Soltane | Sousse to Tataouine Louages | Indians Explor

We went to the south of Tunisia, to the desert town of Tataouine, which was the inspiration behind the name for the planet of Tatooine in George Lucas' Star Wars - Luke Skywalker's home planet. We headed to Ksar Oualed Soltane from there, which was a Star Wars film set and enjoyed every moment.

Tataouine was an incredible experience, the locals made the trip extra special with their kind attitude and helpful gestures.

Tunisian Dinar is a closed currency which means you cannot bring in or take out any TND cash to/from Tunisia.

1 TND = 1000 millims and you need to carry enough coins.

As of Sep 2023, the bank notes mostly used are of 5, 10, 20, and 50 denominations and the coin denominations are 1,2 and 5 TND and 10, 20, 50, 100, 200, 500 milims.

Tunisia Visa for Indian Passports in Sep 2023 :

As of Sep 2023, Indian passport holders need pre-arranged visas to Tunisia from an overseas Tunisian consulate. We applied from the consulate of Tunisia in Nice, France and the process was time consuming.

Visa Fees: 75 Euros each (cash only)

Documents submitted: Passport copy, Residence Proof in France, Filled in and signed Application Form, Photograph, Hotel Bookings (Booked on Booking.com, having accommodation proof is mandatory for Tunisia tourist visa) and round trip flight tickets

20th July 2023: Submitted application, paid visa fees, they did not keep the passport with them.

12th Aug 2023: Went to the consulate for a follow up on the visa processing, they told us our file reached the Tunisian Ministry on 26th July, decision was still pending.

25th Aug 2023: Got a call from the consulate that the visa has been approved and to come with our passports.

25th Aug 2023 (same day): Went to the consulate and got the visa stamp.

The entire process was pretty straight forward and simple, the hardest part being the wait from 20th July to 25th Aug. Normal processing time for Tunisia visa here is around 3-4 weeks.

After a few days of doing nothing in the desert oasis Ksar Ghilane we drive together with @Staubteufelchen2021 to the Berber village Chenini, well known for its cave dwellings. The route is a bumpy piste embedded in an amazing desert landscape.

Tunisian Desert and its Star Wars sets (Tunisia, 2005)

Tunisia's Abandoned Ancient City in the Sky (Guermessa, Tataouine) - Bradt Guides تونس

Today we explore the wonderful site of Guermessa in Tataouine Governorate, Tunisia. This was once an impregnable Amazigh fortress (ksar), perched on top of a mountain in the Dahar range of Tunisia's south-east, dating back to the seventh or eighth century CE. Today it is completely abandoned, but you can still explore the extensive ruins, which have recently been refurbished, including housing, an olive oil press, a mosque, a shrine and ancient graves where human remains are visible today due to weathering of the burial stones. This should definitely be a UNESCO World Heritage Site, it is amazing!

Nous avons visité à Chenini un village dans la montagne troglodytique berbérophone du sud de la Tunisie qui se trouve à 18 kilomètres de Tataouine. C'est une belle expérience à vivre et à découvrir pour les touristes.

DOURIET, TUNISIA

Douiret is a ruined Berber village in the Tataouine district in southern Tunisia. Located on a hilltop near a modern village of the same name, Douiret was a fortified granary, or ksar (plural ksour.) Like other ksour created by North African Berber communities, Douiret was built on a hilltop to help protect it from raiding parties. Douiret is a regular stop on southern Tunisia's ksar trail, along with the villages of Chenini, Ksar Ouled Soltane and Ksar Hadada.

The old village of Douiret is located 22 km southwest of Tataouine in a rugged mountainous region. The old village transformed into ruins is surmounted by its citadel or ksar overlooking troglodyte houses dug in the mountain and aligned in a meandering fashion along its cliff. A path of about 3 km is lined up with abandoned dwellings mostly in ruins with the exception of the eye-catching white mosque (known as 'the palm tree mosque' or Jamaa ennakhla) at midway and a couple of renovated dwellings serving as a showcase and/or an atypical motel to host visitors and tourists.
