Macau Travel Tips: 10 Things to Know Before You Go

10 things YOU need to know before you go to Macau. A comprehensive travel guide to bring you up to speed on the Language, Food, Casinos, and more! First, some basic knowledge on Macau: Macau was a Colony of Portugal from 1557-1999, and now it’s a Special Administrative Region of China just like Hong Kong. Macau is small -- 30 sq km, or 11 sq miles. 640,000 people live there. In 2017 Macau had 30 million visitors… lots of people for such a tiny place. 64km (40 miles) west of Hong Kong. A great day trip from Hong Kong, but easily worth 2 nights

Macau is best known as a gambling and shopping mecca, but it also has a really neat historic portuguese center
Macau is the only place in China where you can gamble legally. It generates more revenue from gambling than anywhere else on the earth including more than about seven times the revenue generated by “The Strip” in La Vegas

4 main parts…
the main part of Macau with the historic Portuguese core. This is called the Macau Peninsula
Taipa
Cotai Strip
Colane

2. Getting In

Ferry from Hong Kong
Takes 40-60 Minutes
2 different operators
Turbojet: The Red One
Cotai Water Jet: The Blue One
4 Ferry Terminal in Hong Kong
2 Ferry Terminals in Macau -
If you’re going to the Cotai Strip, most convenient to take Cotai Water Jet
Going to the Historic Portuguese section, take Turbojet

Macau does have it’s own airport, but not many flights

There’s a new bridge from HKG to Macau, you can take a bus on it

Or cross the border by land from China.

4. Unlucky
This number omitted because it’s unlucky. 4 in Chinese sounds like the word for “Death.” Most buildings typically omit this floor.

5. Getting Around

Free Shuttle Service

Macau’s hotels offer free shuttle service from the airport, ferry terminals, and border gates.

· The Venetian Macao Free Shuttle Schedule

· The Parisian Macao Free Shuttle Schedule

· Sands Cotai Central Free Shuttle Schedule

Bus
Public buses operate frequently throughout Macau, Taipa, and Coloane. Buses have onboard stop notifications in Mandarin, Cantonese, Portuguese and English.

· Price: Within Macau or Taipa: MOP3.2, Macau-Taipa: MOP4.2, Macau-Coloane: MOP5, Airport service: MOP4.2.

Taxi
Macau’s taxis come in two color schemes: one is yellow, the other is black and cream. Both color taxis charge the same fees. Taxis stands are located near hotel lobbies.

Tips:

·Base price (first 1.6 km): MOP17, additional MOP2 for each 260 m afterwards.
Extra fees: Taxi waiting fee is MOP2 for every minute. Taxis have a MOP3 luggage storing fee. There is a MOP2 fee from Taipa to Coloane, and a MOP5 fee from Macau to Coloane. There is an MOP5 fee for taxi trips to and from the airport.

Uber operates in Macau

6. Money
Macanese Pataca (MOP)
Most shops and restaurants will accept HKG to pay, with a 1:1 exchange rate to MOP
The exchange rate is fixed at HK$1 = MOP$1.03
But you’ll typically get change back in MOP

7. Language

Portuguese (but its own dialect)
And Chinese (Cantonese)
A little less english than Hong Kong, but enough to get by

8. Shopping

In every hotel on the Cotai Strip

9. The rest of Macau outside the Casinos and Historic Districts

10. Food:
Macanese cuisine’ is a mix of southern Chinese and Portuguese ingredients and cooking techniques. With a history dating back over 400 years, the cuisine is often regarded as the world’s first fusion cuisine.

Egg Tart that is so popular in Dim Sum restaurants originated here.. Lord Stows cafe is the original located in Taipa. Most convenient location is the one in the Venetian

Bifanas - Thin breaded pork Sandwich

Really good high end Chinese food cheaper than Hong Kong. The Wynn hotel has some really good options.

Please like this video, and subscribe to our channel for future updates.

Welcome to our channel.

In this video, we are going to talk about Top 10 Best restaurants in Macau.

Macau's food, like the city itself, is a unique blend of East and West culture, and the city's numerous restaurants elegantly reflect this eating environment.

The majority of Macau's restaurants feature a complex yet fascinating juxtaposition of the city's profound ancient Chinese heritage with modern-day European influence.

Macau is one of the few places where you can find restaurants offering real Portuguese cuisine alongside Michelin-starred Chinese eateries.

The cultural mix and the love for the food itself is the reason why Macau has countless spaces to eat at, including casinos, starred restaurants, centuries-old tea houses, bakeries, street food corners, and taverns.

Slices of Beef & Pork Jerky, Almond Cookies & Fresh Baked Egg Tarts are some popular local delicacies of this place.

For people in Macau, food is a celebration that extends throughout the year.

Owing to Macau’s 400 plus-year-old culinary legacy and the increasing interest among the youth in gastronomy culture, especially Macanese cuisine, the city has been designated as UNESCO Creative City of Gastronomy by the Director-General of UNESCO, Irina Bokova.

The following are Macau's top ten restaurants:

Macau Street Food Tour - Macanese Eats Taste Test in Macao Transcript:

Well good afternoon from Macau (澳門 - 澳门). It is lunchtime over here so we're going to be sampling some Macanese street food. Yeah, we're just basically going to wander around and try as many tasty bites as we possibly can.

So it took us a while to find a place that was serving pork chops this early. But we finally found one. Yeah, some of them weren't going to start serving them until 2pm.

Until 2 pm. And it is around noon right now so oh bummer but we finally found somewhere and this pork chop bun (豬扒包) is one of the most popular street foods you can find in Macau (澳門 - 澳门).

Next up we're having Pastel de Nata (蛋撻 - 蛋挞) and this is where you start to see the Portuguese influence in Macanese cuisine. This is something that you find everywhere in Portugal. We had these when we were in Lisbon.

We have St. Paul's Ruins (大三巴牌坊) off in the background and Sam ready to sample more food. Yeah, so something you're going to find in Macau (澳門 - 澳门) well just about everywhere. Especially around the Saint Paul's Ruins (大三巴牌坊) is you get this beef jerky (豬肉乾) that is for sale. Yeah. And you buy these big slabs and they cut it up for you like there is just a huge amount here.

Anyways we found our next snack and we're having almond cakes (杏仁餅). So check those out. It looks really powdery and it actually has chunks of almond in it. Wow.

And we saw these being freshly made. So it is pretty amazing. That is how we decided on the store. We're like oh they're making them right outside so.

How are those?

Good. It is quite dry. It is almost like a chalky like powdery texture so if you're planning on having a few you probably want tea or like some kind of beverage nearby.

A bubble tea (波霸奶茶). Have a bubble tea nearby.

Somebody couldn't resist. What have you been searching for all day? I've been looking also for durian ice cream (榴莲冰淇淋). Because we've tried coconut ice cream and that was a little tame. Let's go in for some durian and these right here are big chunks of durian and it smells just like durian.

So our Macanese food adventures are over. We came, we saw, we ate, we conquered. Like we ate a lot of food. We did. I think we had seven or eight different things. Yeah. None of it cost a lot. We're bringing a lot home. So it is a great way to just kind of snack our way around Macao (澳門 - 澳门). All day long. All day long. And the fact we didn't sit down and wait in restaurants meant that we got to do a lot more sightseeing. We got to taste more food. Yeah. So I highly recommend this. If you come here just snack your way around Macau (澳門 - 澳门). You'll save money and you'll get to see a lot more.

This is part of our Travel in Macau video series showcasing Macau food, Macau culture and Macau cuisine.

80years macau wonton noodles / Macau street food / 80년된 마카우 완탕면

Wonton noodles is a Cantonese noodle dish.
Wonton noodles were not given their name, until the Tang Dynasty.
The dish is popular in Southern China, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore and Thailand. The dish is usually served in a hot broth, garnished with leafy vegetables and wonton dumplings. The types of leafy vegetables used are usually kai-lan, also known as Chinese kale. Another type of dumpling known as shui jiao is sometimes served in place of wonton. It contains prawns, chicken or pork, and spring onions, with some chefs adding mushroom and black fungus.

Saving Macau’s Dying Language

Macau is best known today for its casinos, but 20 years ago, it was a colony governed by the Portuguese, who had been there for over 400 years. Many of the Portuguese traders married Chinese women, and their children developed their own distinct food, culture, and language.

But now this mixed-race group, known as the Macanese, makes up less than 1 percent of Macau’s population, and their language, Patuá, is dying.

A Day Eating in Macau

In this episode I’m leaving Hong Kong for nearby Macau – a former Portuguese territory that is now famous for its casinos and hordes of China mainland tourists.

I’m meeting up with Samuel, who takes me around to eat traditional Macau streetfood – including pork chop bun, fishballs and custard tarts. I’m also learning that there’s such a thing as ‘Macanese cuisine’, and get to taste some of their dishes at Café Litoral.

And, one couldn’t go to Macau without visiting the Casinos, so I’m spending some time at the Venetian and Parisian, and even get to eat at the Parisian’s very own Eiffel Tower restaurant, La Chine.

Macau - DELICIOUS local DESSERT from a TRADITIONAL restaurant

While searching for Lo Ba Gao in Macau, Eliz and I ran across this traditional restaurant, wanting to still try something new I saw something unique, a large block of what looked like a hard pastry. To my surprise the pastry was fried dough which was incredibly delicious. This along with a purple rice in coconut milk was the highlight of the day!
