Episode 1: Hi, we are Ryan and Sophie, and we quit our startup jobs to go sail the World.

Two months to departure!

In this episode, I tell about how we went from being full-time employees to quitting our jobs, buying a sailboat and leaving Stockholm, Sweden, to go sail the world.

Ryan and I met on Tinder in March 2015, and hit it off immediately. Unfortunately, 3 months later, Ryan sustained a really bad shoulder dislocation subsequent to a goose attack.
While staying at home, Ryan killed his time on Bored Panda, and read the story of how a couple our age quit their jobs, bought a boat, and went on to sail the world for 5 years (the couple in question is no other than Matt & Jessica sailing).
At that time, we were getting really tired of our uninspiring office jobs, and started to ask us what life would be like if we really did what we loved.
We took a 2 weeks sailing course in Gibraltar in January 2016.
We bought our boat, a Beneteau Oceanis 40 from 2007 with a two cabins layout in March 2016.
The learning curve got way steeper than we anticipated, and after one season sailing in Stockholm's archipelago, we didn't know how we felt about sailing.
Our second season was way better, and we decided that we were ready to start our voyage!
We are leaving Stockholm, Sweden in 2 months, and will take the Kiel channel, cross the North Sea to the UK, then go to my hometown in Brittany, cross Biscay to Coruna, and once in Gibraltar, we will make a decision where we go next!

Sleepless in the English Channel #14

We knew the passage between the North Sea and the English Channel would be a challenge: we got our money worth.

We left IJmuiden and set sail towards Cherbourg, knowing that the narrowest and shallowest part of the passage would be done by night.

We planned to make a straight sail down to Europort, and then get closer to the shoreline to take the coastal route between Zeebrugge and Calais.

Passing Europort felt a little nervous, as we had to cross some heavy traffic. Trouble started as we approached Zeebrugge, and a straight downwind got us bouncing and rolling up and down big waves.

Ryan was a lot more comfortable than I was, and we discussed options: taking a break in Dunkerque or Calais, and wait for better conditions.

That night, we simply couldn't sleep. At 11PM, I try to get a little rest but I couldn't close my eyes.

I got back in the cockpit at 12AM, and Ryan and I helped each others with the navigation.

Reaching Dunkerque felt like arriving in the Mordor, with the big chimnies lit on fire. The waters were still choppy and the wind blowing a solid 25 knots right at our stern, but we pushed through.

Ryan went down in the cabin, and threw himself on the settee in his foulie, lifejacket and wellies to get a couple of hours of sleep.

Eventually, at 5AM, it was my turn to get a little rest. That didn't last long, as we got a little wake-up radio call from the French customs, who approached us from the stern to ask a few questions in some of the most perfect French accents I've ever encountered.

The day that followed was a perfect sailing day, followed by a calm night and a beautiful sunrise over Barlfleur.

We reached Cherbourg in the morning, a couple of days before France won the World Cup.

Getting over my fear of big ships (and naked sailors?) in the Kiel canal #13

I’m scared of getting close to the big ships. Which is exactly what we are about to do many times over the course of one day, as we enter the Kiel canal.

I was quite excited to take the Kiel canal on our sailboat, even if that meant a full day of motoring. The perspective of going into locks for the first time in the most trafficked man-made channel in the world felt appealing.

When I started to realize that it probably meant we were going to get quite close to the big ships that scare me so much, the Kiel canal became a little more daunting of a place.

Our first close encounter with a big ship occurred 5 minutes after our exit of the locks, as our neighbor passed us, forming a big wake that bounced us properly.

Less than an hour later, an even bigger ship appeared in front of us, scaring the living h*** out of me. We cozied up with many big ships that day, and if exposure counts as therapy, the Kiel canal should have cured my fear of big ships permanently (the story shows that this isn’t true…)

The constant proximity with other ship came to take a more awkward turn later that day, as we very slowly passed a bare-skinned sailor on his sailboat. Ryan told me the guy seemed to wear no shirt, and as I hand steered to passed him, I realized he wasn’t wearing pants either. I accelerated to make the awkward moment as fast as possible. While I was embarrassed by the situation, Ryan wondered about the clotheless sailor the entire day.

The locks passage in Holtenau was way smoother, and for 5 minutes, I really appreciated entering the North Sea. 5 minutes later, I realized traffic, boats and proximity with big ships was actually way worse in the Elbe river than it was in the canal. After a couple of close calls near a big ships anchorage, we eventually enjoyed a nice sunset before arriving in Cuxhaven, after 14 hours of motoring.

I can rarely film our arrival. Partly because we shorthand Polar Seal and I haven’t found a way to have the camera out, partly because I’m generally dead-tired when we arrive.
That day, Ryan and I had a “docking argument”(they are classic), that we managed to eventually laugh about. We arrived in Cuxhaven safe, sound, and richer of experience.

Next week, we start answering the questions you’ve sent us!

Ryan’s nerdy guide to lithium batteries on sailboats (VS lead acid)

This week, Ryan shares all the knowledge he has of lithium batteries from the company he once started with his once college roommate, and why we are installing lithium batteries on our sailboat.

Ryan goes through all the advantages of lithium batteries, from size, weight, charging time, charging cycles to temperature range and useful power.

We go through the different type of lithium batteries out there in the world and compare the price between lithium and lead acid batteries. Ryan even answers some questions regarding having lithium batteries on boats.

In a different video, we will show the installation process.

Sailing to Islas Cíes: the best beach in the World. #21

The Islas CÍes was named by The Guardian “Top 1 of 10 beaches in the World”. We set sail from Muros towards the CÍes Islands to see for ourselves if this beach lives up to the title.

The sail there is gorgeous: 22 knots of downwind, a smooth ride that only gets better when a pod of dolphins comes by to greet us and play at Polar Seal’s bow.

At this point, Ryan is still recovering from his two weeks of business trips, and feels tired all the way down there.

The next day, we inflate the dinghy and leave Polar Seal for an excursion on the trails of Isla do Faro, and climb up the top at Faro de Cìes. We then go down to spend the day at the beach, where Sophie runs straight to dive in the water, only to find out that it is quite cold.

Leaving Cìes means leaving Galicia, which makes us a bit sad. Galicia is a gem of a region, and we cannot believe that we didn’t know about it before we made landfall from crossing Biscay. The landscapes are incredible, the people absolutely lovely and the food unbelievably good and affordable.

Go check it out!!!
