Ilulissat Icefjord - Large iceberg breaking over

Once in a life time experience...The last day before returning home this huge iceberg cracked right in front us.

We were quite baffled so please disregard the at times stupid commentary ;-)

This video was shot at the same time near the water:

Large Iceberg Breaking near Ilulissat

Iceberg breaking up in the Ilulissat icefjord, close to an archaeological site called Sermermiut.

**A quick note - some of the external links to this video have mixed information. To be more precise, this is a large iceberg breaking up, which had already calved from the icecap. The large ones often collect at the end of the fjord, where it is a bit shallower. The NASA image at the end of the video shows this a bit more clearly**

INCREDIBLE COLLAPSE TRIGGERED BY GLACIER CALVING | South America, Chile

An incredibly large chunk of the Grey Glacier's ice-sheet breaks off and flips over in a spectacular way in Southern Patagonia, Chile. The ice-sheet of the Grey Glacier is currently declining due to increasing temperatures and changes in rainfall. It is part of the 'Southern Patagonian Ice Field', the world's 2nd largest contiguous extrapolar ice field and the largest freshwater reservoir in South America.

The Grey Glacier is famous for insane glacier wall collapses during the summer when large icebergs – often up to 100 feet in height – are breaking off the glacier and collapsing into the water of the 'Lago Grey'. In the right time of the year big blocks of ice break off the glacier and drop into the water. The waves created by such glacier calving events often splash dozens of meters through the air. The glacier itself is about 6 km (3.7 mi) wide and has an average height of over 30 m (100 ft) above the surface of the water.

Thankfully, no-one was injured as boats stay at a safe distance from the glacier (for a good reason).

Glacier calving, also known as ice calving, or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. The sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier or iceberg often causes large waves around the area and can result in a shooter which is a large chunk of the submerged portion of the iceberg surfacing above the water. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. (Find out more here:

Ilulissat - Greenland Travel (No. 1 Destination) - Visit The City of Icebergs! - (Travel Guide)

Travel to Greenland means experiencing a unique Inuit culture - and Icebergs! Ilulissat is one of the world's most remarkable destinations. Situated where the UNESCO recognised Ilulissat Icefjord enters Disko Bay, the town watches over a procession of icebergs that mesmerise with their fantastical shapes and colours. It is also a centre for sledge-dog culture and the howls of the dogs are an ever-present soundtrack. This short film provides a brief history of the settlement and also visits the Icefjord Centre, the Icefjord itself, and the Knud Rasmussen museum before taking to the water to view the icebergs up close. Thank you to Casper Christensen of Disko Line Explorer for providing a fascinating insight into the impact of climate change on this unique location.

ILULISSAT ICEFJORD | I FROZE In Front Of The Icebergs (GREENLAND TRAVEL VLOG Ep 2)

ILULISSAT ICEFJORD | I FROZE In Front Of The Icebergs (GREENLAND TRAVEL VLOG Ep 2)

This was the moment that froze me, literally and figuratively. I found myself standing in front of a dramatic view of endless massive icebergs, smiling like an idiot, and simply just feeling grateful for being there and being alive at that very moment.

This episode of my Greenland tours is about my story to Ilulissat Icefjord (aka Kangia), an UNESCO World Heritage site located 250 km (155 mi) north of the Arctic Circle. Being the most productive glacier in the Northern Hemisphere, it calves roughly 20 billion tonnes and 35 km3 (8.5 mi3) of ice. This is truly the most breathtaking scenery I have ever experienced. And it was on this very day, I finally found my happy place on this planet earth.

Enjoy part 1 (of 3) of my solo travel vlog series to Ilulissat. More adventures from my travels during the pandemic coming up (Don't forget to subscribe)

Cheers,
Michael Wanderworld

Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is a form of ice ablation or ice disruption and is normally caused by the glacier expanding. It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. Calving of glaciers is often accompanied by a loud cracking or booming sound before blocks of ice up to 60 metres (200 ft) high break loose and crash into the water. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. The waves formed in locations like Johns Hopkins Glacier can be so large that boats cannot approach closer than 3 kilometres (1.9 mi). These events have become major tourist attractions in locations such as Alaska. Many glaciers terminate at oceans or freshwater lakes which results naturally with the calving of large numbers of icebergs. Calving of Greenland's glaciers produce 12,000 to 15,000 icebergs each year alone. Calving of ice shelves is usually preceded by a rift. These events are not often observed.

Ilulissat Icefjord Boat Tour at Midnight in Ilulissat, Greenland - Travel Vlog

Explore Ilulissat Icefjord with me as I sail to Ilulissat Icefjord at midnight to explore Ilulissat icebergs. This Ilulissat Icefjord boat tour starts at 9:30pm and ends at 12:30am. Ilulissat Icefjord is a fjord in western Greenland, located 250 km north of the Arctic Circle. Ilulissat Icefjord was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2004.

The midnight sun lasts between 27 May and 18 July. The sun never sets on the town of Ilulissat during this period. This experience, known as the Midnight Sun, only occurs above the Arctic Circle.

Ilulissat means Icebergs. It has the biggest icebergs you'll see outside Antarctica. Ilulissat Icebergs come from Jakobshavn Glacier known as Ilulissat glacier, which is the world’s fasted glacier and moves up to 40 meters per day. The iceberg that sank the Titanic was probably born in Ilulissat. Ilulissat was founded in 1741. The population is approximately 4530.

Exploring Ilulissat Icefjord in Ilulissat, Greenland (Ilulissat Icebergs) - Travel vlog

Explore Ilulissat Icefjord with me in this walk-and-talk video as I walk down the wooden boardwalk to reach the main viewing platform of Ilulissat Icefjord in Greenland. The boardwalk is about one and a half kilometers long and it starts from the Ilulissat Icefjord center and ends right before the main viewing platform of Ilulissat Icefjord. The viewpoint offers a spectacular view of big icebergs that come from Jakobshavn Glacier known as Ilulissat Glacier. The Iceberg that sank the Titanic might have come from Ilulissat. If you are interested in the blue trail hike, check out this video:

Ilulissat Icefjord Timelapse - The Melting Point

The melting rate of Greenland's inland ice cap increases steadily, while the expansion of its fringes accelerates. This causes the glaciers to calve faster than previously and more icebergs are formed. This can be observed at the Ilulissat Icefjord which has become a symbol of the effect of the global warming.

Located on the west coast of Greenland, Ilulissat Icefjord is the sea mouth of Sermeq Kujalleq, one of the few glaciers through which the Greenland ice cap reaches the sea. Sermeq Kujalleq is one of the fastest and most active glaciers in the world.
Possibly the iceberg that sank the Titanic came from here.
