In this video we visited Ilha Grande in the south of the state of Rio. We got to do some amazing hiking through the jungles, visit a waterfall and chill on a great beach. This place definitely turned out to be our favorite place in Rio.

Come with me to explore Rio's best kept secret, Ilha Grande! The most beautiful island only 2 hours from Rio. This was the best start to our Backpacking Brazil tour! We arrived on the Tuesday and extended our stay until the Saturday as we loved it so much. Points of note were the Prison Hike trail, the Isles of Paradise tour and the Blue Lagoon!
We stayed at the wonderful Biergarten, and I would recommend going out for drinks at Che Lagarto and going clubbing at Aquario.
This was honestly such a highlight of our trip to Brazil and made my first few days in Brazil incredible.

The snorkeling is incredible, even if you decided to do a daytrip this is well worth your time. It's got so much coral and beautiful colorful fish to snorkel with. Book a snorkel trip with one of the locals and do a island tour to check out Pablo Escobar's abandoned mansion, if its a clear day you might just be able to see a plane that went down in the water just in front of his mansion.

Come along with me as I go island hopping around Ilha Grande, Brazil! This place is a true paradise on Earth.
I'm fortunate enough to have been to hundreds of beaches around the world, but I can easily see why they say that Lopes Mendes beach is considered to be among the top 10 best beaches in the world.
The main town on Ilha Grande is called Vila do Abraão, which was easy to walk around and explore. Plus it has a lovely beach of its own. But, with 365 surrounding islands, a day of island hopping seemed inevitable!

BETTER THAN Ilha Grande? Island Hopping ANGRA DOS REIS | You NEED to come here! | Brazil TRAVEL VLOG
Angra Dos Reis is not just about Ilha Grande... there are so many other islands to visit and things to do. You really need to come here to fully understand. We hopped islands and swam with turtles.
In this video we take the cheaper option of staying on the mainland instead of the popular backpacker destination: Illha Grande. As it was not long after carnival, the island was fairly booked up and prices hiked.. We opted for Angra Dos Reis mainland, near Bonfim, in a place we had never heard of and had no idea what to expect.
Our hostel owner spoke no English so Google Translate was our new best friend. We had an amazing decking area and breakfast overlooking the bay, as turtles ever morning. This was the ONLY place we saw them in the wild in Brazil. I was lucky enough to get in and have a little swim with them.
Gemma wasn't so lucky, getting bit by a dog... but it was okay... more on that in the video. We also won at life when we went island hopping and managed to get a private boat all day long. Schools or fish, tiny islands and beautiful sun. Angra took us by surprise.
We are so new to vlog travel, having just provided highlights set to music before (see the SE Asia series). SO this adventure is filmed and edited on the road, in hostels, on the ground with THE most slow WIFI. Having to travel and edit is going to be challenging. We would love for you to follow us in the journey and hope the videos provide good information if you are planning to travel to the area or just interested. If it helps just one of you, then thats amazing!
We just had the most amazing time at Rio Carnival and now we will have no set plans, apart from a flight to Bolivia in a few weeks... SO make sure to subscribe to see where we end up.

Ilha Grande is also called as Island Paradise and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with 99% of the island covered in natural Atlantic rainforest and spectacular beaches. The island has become a hot tourist destination because of its wonderful environment and several tracks that lead to fantastic unspoiled tropical beaches. Ilha Grande is one of the richest ecosystems of the world. The island is home to many endangered species like brown howler monkey, the maned sloth, red-ruffed fruit cow, the broad-snouted caiman and the red-browed amazon parrot.
Ilha Grande is located in the state of Rio de Janeiro in Brazil and is largely undeveloped and present mostly in its natural state. The island is also famous because of an old prison which is now closed. The Candido Mendes was a top-security prison that kept some of the most dangerous criminals of Brazil. Due to the high-security prison, the island was closed for public access for almost a century. This also helped the ecosystem of the island to flourish in an ideal natural environment. The island waters have corals, topical fish, sharks, sea turtles, magellanic penguins, dolphins and much more.
Motorized vehicles are still banned on the island, but the tourism is being encouraged. The tourists are loving this place; there are more than 150 kilometers of hiking trails and around 100 unspoiled beaches. There are several travel companies that offer sight-seeing trips and tourist guides to Ilha Grande.
