After a little research, what you're seeing is a riptide or some call it an undertow.
As you can see, the beach is closed, two red flags.
The water is coming IN where it is white and washing into the center where the water is a darker color. It's coming in from both sides and dumping into the middle. then it's going back out in the middle. The incoming waves are deceiving (over the dark area), but that's why some call it undertow. The water under the incoming waves is moving outward with great strength. You can see the white foam moving out in the middle. From this angle (in the air), it's easy to see, but on the beach, most of it looks the same. It's good that the beach-goers are there, as they give the immensity of the phenomenon some scale. See the white bubbles coming up beyond the break of the surf. This is where a person mightresurface after being taken out by the undertow or riptide as some would call it. Be careful out there people. This is dangerous.

Today we visit the beautiful Witsand Bay, which is well known
for its dangerous rip currents and rough seas. The most important thing with rip currents is not to panic, and not to fight it. Floating on your back is the best way to save energy and eventually the rip current will stop. This is called the ‘rip head’ and you will know when you have reached this point. Then attempt to swim back parallel to the shoreline where the waves are breaking. As you can see the sea does get very choppy in this area making conditions worse to swim in.
I was pretty shocked how far the rip current had sept me out to sea. I did panic for several seconds but once on my back felt better. I was lucky that i caught it in time, could have been much worse. These rip currents The well known rips run from ‘Rame Head’ along the coast to Portwrinkle. These currents run fast and do catch people out. Just search ‘Witsand bay rip currents’ on the net and you will see the results, frightening!
Just to let everyone know I do actually swim in the sea 2 - 3 times per week at different locations around Devon & Cornwall so I fully understand the perils of rip tides and strong currents. I must admit this rip current did catch me out, because it happened so fast! I also got diverted with the filming so I’ve learnt my lesson!

There is life guard cove here from April to September. I am told they are kept busy especially during the summer months. A big thanks to the RNLI for the great work around out coastline. This beach is also popular with dog walkers because of its vast area.
Square Waves Are Extremely Dangerous!!
Square waves are dangerous for the simple reason that they come from two different directions and most likely two different weather systems. They are therefore accompanied by powerful and opposing currents. The result can lead to stronger combined currents as well as powerful rips.
