Hornstrandir Nature Reserve in the Westfjords of Iceland

Hornstrandir is the most isolated region of Iceland’s coastline.

Life in this northernmost tip of the Westfjords has always been harsher than elsewhere in Iceland. The locals depended on
fishing and hunting birds as the terrain was too barren for agriculture. When Iceland was modernised in the 1950s the last inhabitants departed, leaving their turf houses deserted and the region at the mercy of the elements.

In earlier times, outlaws often sought refuge in Hornstrandir, hoping to board a ship and escape Iceland. This is the northwestern frontier of Europe, almost within sight of Greenland, but English, Basque and Portuguese fishing vessels would venture here for the bountiful waters.

No roads lead to this nature reserve, you must go by boat or foot and bring provisions. The lighthouse at Hornbjarg, featured in the video, is the only accommodation apart from camping.

Polar bears occasionally drift ashore from nearby Greenland and may go unnoticed, especially in winter when the land is snowclad and human visitors are rare.

This is the sanctuary of the elusive arctic fox, hunted elsewhere in Iceland, so visitors are almost sure of seeing one. They are friendlier and more curious here than elsewhere as they are the apex predator, ideal for photographers.

Hornstrandir is home to two of the largest bird cliffs in Europe…including the 534m high sheer cliff, Hornbjarg, a must-see for travellers hiking in Hornstrandir.

Iceland's Westfjords: a top travel destination for 2022, remote and magical

Rarely do tourists make it as far as the Westfjords peninsula in Iceland. Only 10 percent of visitors to the country in the far northwest of Europe come to this remote region. Yet the landscape is simply magical: with huge waterfalls, lonely beaches and raw, wild nature. The Westfjords are one of Lonely Planet's top travel destinations for 2022. Iceland-based photographer and filmmaker @IsleyReust takes us on a tour!

Iceland Part 3 - Westfjords and the Látrabjarg Bird Cliffs to see Puffins.

Our drive up the west coast of Iceland, including lots of puffins.

Explore Latrabjarg Cliffs in the Westfjords of Iceland (Europe's largest bird cliff)

Latrabjarg is Europe's largest bird cliff. It is a promontory and the westernmost point in Iceland. It is also one of the westernmost parts of Europe. Látrabjarg is located in the Westfjords of Iceland.

Látrabjarg is home to a wide variety of birds. The main species are Skuas, Arctic Terns, Guillemots, Eider Ducks and Razorbills, and Atlantic Puffins.

I hiked for about 2 hours to enjoy the stunning views along the cliffs.

The road to get there is gravel. The parking is free. There is no public bathroom in the parking lot. However, there is a bathroom facility that you might see along the way just about half a kilometer before reaching the parking lot.

Cute Puffins at Latrabjarg, Westfjords, Iceland

One of Europes biggest bird cliffs, a home to birds in unfathomable numbers. This westernmost point of Iceland is really a line of several cliffs, 14 kilometres long and up to 441 m high.
Safe from foxes, the birds are fearless, and provide stunning photographic opportunities from close range. The puffins are particularly tame and are the ones frequenting the grassy, higher part of the cliffs.
Látrabjarg is thus deservedly the most visited tourist attraction in the Westfjords. The cliffs are easily accessible by car and when you're there, a walk along the cliffs awaits.

Puffins in Iceland: East Fjords (Borgarfjörður Eystri) vs West Fjords (Latrabjarg Cliffs)

One of the highlights of our trip in Iceland was seeing the cute birds known as puffins. We did quite a bit of research as to where best to see them - and since we couldn't decide, we tried to catch them from both the East Fjords (Borgarfjörður Eystri) and the West Fjords (Latraberg Cliffs). We were so mesmerised by these cute creatures and spent hours on end watching them fly in the sky!

In the East Fjords (start from 2:13) they were flying everywhere but a bit far away.
In the West Fjords (start from 6:28) they were just over the edge of the cliff - which means crazy tourists would take some unnecessary risks for that Insta selfie! You get to be so much closer to the birds in Latraberg, but you don't get to see them fly around as much as they're just perched in their holes.

If all we saw in Iceland were puffins, that in itself would be worth it.

We visited in: June 2018

Puffin Paradise Borgarfjordur Eystri is one of the best places in the world to see Puffins.

Around 10.000 to 15.000 Puffins live in Hafnarhólmi in Borgarfjordur Eystri.
The Hafnarhólmi in Borgarfjörður Eystri is an area highly suitable for birdwatching. On the premises there is a staircase leading up to a platform where one can get closer to puffins and the birds of the sea than ever imaginable. The puffins arrive in April and disappear overnight around August 15th.
Underway to Hafnarhólminn one enjoys good close-ups of vivid birdlife and the artic tern nests along the shore and on banks of the river. The harbor proudly raises the blue flag indicating that the inhabitans are respectful and attentive towards their surroundings.

Puffins kingdom Iceland Latrabjarg cliffs flying hunting puffin bird drone aerial video footage

Puffins in Iceland the biggest kingdom of the birds.

Cliffs Latrabjarg are without a doubt a great kingdom of puffins.
If you visiting Iceland- walking along the cliffs of the peninsula Latrabjarg is a must. It is a unique place, the westernmost point of Europe.
The cliffs are so steep that make an amazing impression, millions of birds, dozen species, and of course, beautiful and friendly Puffins, which did almost nothing with our presence, we had them on the doorstep :) The different situation was with the drone, birds sensed the danger and giving an effective dive in the ocean :)
If any of you decide on an expedition, I recommend to visit this charming place late in the evening, please keep in mind that Puffins during the day most of the time they spend fishing and feeding the chicks. Ideally time to arrive is after 9-10 p.m. local time when most of the birds are sitting on the cliffs.
We arrived at midnight, there were 3 or 4 other cars and only two people visible on horizon- a paradise for observing, taking photos and struggle with the wind during the risky flight :)
Anyway, I drank whiskey with Puffins, a drone or as it should be professionally determine “the UAV for the commoners” came back in one piece :)
Video of the flight.. well.. came out somehow- because of the weather and the poor light doesn’t fully reflect the charm of the place, but I hope that it will be enjoyed :)
On the whole expedition to Iceland, time spent on these cliffs will be in our memory forever, what is more we'll come back there I think more than once.

Puffins are any of three small species of alcids (auks) in the bird genus Fratercula with a brightly coloured beak during the breeding season. These are pelagic seabirds that feed primarily by diving in the water. They breed in large colonies on coastal cliffs or offshore islands, nesting in crevices among rocks or in burrows in the soil. Two species, the tufted puffin and horned puffin, are found in the North Pacific Ocean, while the Atlantic puffin is found in the North Atlantic Ocean.
All puffin species have predominantly black or black and white plumage, a stocky build, and large beaks. They shed the colourful outer parts of their bills after the breeding season, leaving a smaller and duller beak. Their short wings are adapted for swimming with a flying technique under water. In the air, they beat their wings rapidly (up to 400 times per minute)[1] in swift flight, often flying low over the ocean's surface.
