Golden Circle of Iceland - 4K Travel Documentary

The Golden Circle of Iceland is a 300 kilometers (186 mile) route to the three most popular natural attractions in Iceland:
Haukadalur Geothermal Area (also known as Geysir), Gullfoss Waterfall and Thingvellir National Park, but it offers also many more interesting stops, impressive historical spots and natural wonders along the way.

00:11 - Thorufoss Waterfall
Thorufoss is easy to access by road and is located near Thingvellir National Park in the east of Lake Thingvallavat.

00:55 - Thingvellir National Park
Surrounded by a beautiful mountain and volcanic ranges, Thingvellir is located in a rift valley between the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates. This makes it one of the few places in the world where you can walk between the continents, and where the Mid-Atlantic Rift can easily be seen. The Icelandic Parliament was established here in 930 and moved later to Reykjavik, making it the original site of what is now the world’s longest ongoing parliament.

02:18 - Öxarárfoss Waterfall
Öxarárfoss waterfall is one of the main attractions of Thingvellir National Park and can be easily accessed by a short path from the nearby car park.

03:11 - Haukadalur Geothermal Area
This site is also known as Geysir Geothermal Area, and it is a hot-spring haven located in Haukadalur Valley. Its main attraction - the Strokkur geysir - blasts a column of boiling water to heights that can reach over 40 metres every 5-10 minutes.

04:02 - Faxi Waterfall
This very wide and beautiful waterfall is placed in a wonderful and peaceful landscape. It is also called Faxafoss or Vatnsleysufoss waterfall.

04:48 - Gullfoss Waterfall
Gullfoss is located on the Hvita River in South Iceland and is one of the most visited waterfalls in the country. It drops 105 feet (32 meters) into a narrow gorge in two tiers and in summer there are often rainbows in the spray when it catches the light. Gullfoss means The Golden Waterfall as it is a highlight of the Golden Circle, easily accessible from Reykjavik on a day trip.

The Golden Circle (Icelandic: Gullni hringurinn) is a popular tourist route in southern Iceland, covering about 300 kilometres (190 mi) looping from Reykjavík into the southern uplands of Iceland and back. It is the area that contains most tours and travel-related activities in Iceland.
The name Golden Circle is a marketing term that has no roots in Icelandic history.
The three primary stops on the route are the Þingvellir National Park, the Gullfoss waterfall, and the geothermal area in Haukadalur, which contains the geysers Geysir and Strokkur. Though Geysir has been mostly dormant for many years, Strokkur continues to erupt every 5–10 minutes. Other stops include the Kerið volcanic crater, the town of Hveragerði, Skálholt cathedral, and the Nesjavellir and Hellisheiðarvirkjun geothermal power plants.

Golden Circle, Iceland

The Golden Circle is a famous tourist route in Iceland that includes three main attractions: Þingvellir National Park, the Geysir geothermal area, and Gullfoss waterfall. This popular route is located close to Reykjavik, making it easily accessible for visitors.

Þingvellir National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage site known for its historical significance as the meeting place of Iceland's ancient parliament, Alþingi. It offers stunning natural landscapes, including a rift valley formed by the separation of the North American and Eurasian tectonic plates.

The Geysir geothermal area is home to the famous Strokkur geyser, which erupts with impressive force every few minutes, shooting boiling water up to 15-20 meters into the air. Visitors can witness this natural spectacle and explore the geothermal features of the area.

Gullfoss waterfall, also known as the Golden Falls, is a breathtaking waterfall located on the Hvítá River. Its powerful cascades and golden-hued mist create a mesmerizing sight, especially during the summer months when the glacial meltwater is at its peak.

The Golden Circle offers a glimpse into Iceland's unique natural wonders, including geothermal activity, historical landmarks, and captivating landscapes. It is a must-visit route for travelers seeking a taste of Iceland's diverse beauty.

This is where you should eat on your Golden Circle road trip in Iceland! ????????????????️????????

When thinking of Iceland, the first thing that comes to mind is probably not fresh produce ???????? However, due to the country's geothermal nature, you'd be surprised by how many greenhouses you'll find! Some of the most frequently grown vegetables are tomatoes, cucumbers, fresh basil, etc. ????????????

On the Golden Circle sightseeing route in Southwest Iceland, you'll find one of Iceland's most famous geothermal tomato farms. It's called Friðheimar, and I highly recommend that you add this place as a lunch stop on your Golden Circle road trip in Iceland ????????

However, make sure you book a table in advance as this place is very popular! ????

At Friðheimar, you'll find everything tomato on the menu! ????‍???? Tomato ice cream and sorbet, tomato pie, tomato coffee, tomato beer, and of course classics such as a selection of bloody mary drinks, tomato salad, etc. ????????????

However, the most popular dish is Friðheimar's tomato soup! ???? It's served buffet style, so you can have as much as you'd like, combined with a big selection of delicious fresh-baked bread ????????

I recommend having the soup combined with tomato and burrata to share for the table and combining it with some of Friðheimar's tasty desserts as a cherry on top of your experience ????????

Apart from the food itself, make sure you have time in your itinerary to fully take the surroundings at Friðheimar ???? Greet the horses and chicken ???????????? and stroll a bit around in the greenhouse to appreciate the impressive tomato plants and geothermal, eco-friendly nature of the farm ????❤️????‍????????

12 HOUR STOPOVER IN ICELAND WITH KIDS-GOLDEN CIRCLE

(September)
On our way to Amsterdam we had a 12 hour stopover in Iceland with Icelandair. We were so excited to have the chance to get a taste of the Golden Circle. After a red eye flight we hurried and got our car and started off to see as much as we could with the little energy we had.
(Tip 1) Knowing we were going to take the train while in The Netherlands and Belgium, we opted to rent car seats from the car rental place which saved us having to haul them around the entire trip.
(Tip 2) It is cold in Iceland in September, so make sure you are prepared, especially in the earlier part of the day. We loved going in this time of year though because it was still warmer and the days were long enough, but we did have the chance to see the northern lights!

First stop: Pourfoss- we saw a sign for a waterfall and we took it. We loved this stop because we were pretty much the only people here and it was so pretty.

Second stop: Thingvellir National Park (45 min from Reykjavik). You can spend an entire day exploring this park. People can even scuba dive here! We explored the old church, played near the river, went to the waterfall (Oxararfoss), and just enjoyed being out exploring.

Third stop: Icelandic horses, you see these everywhere on the Golden circle. We stopped a few times when there was a nice pull out and the horses were close enough we could jump out and pet them.

Fourth stop: Geysir: Fun spot. We have been to Old Faithful in Yellowstone many times and so we are familiar with geysers, but this one was fun because it went off every few minutes.

Fifth stop: Gullfoss- Beautiful and powerful waterfall. After our red eye flight and exploring all day we didn't have the energy to explore much. We just jumped out, looked at the falls and then started our hour and a half drive back to Reykjavik.

We choose to stay very near the airport because we needed to head to the airport at 4 A.M. the next morning.

We can't wait to go and explore more of the Golden Circle some day!
If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to ask!

Happy Travels,
Emily
