Iceberg calving on Lago Argentino

This iceberg (the size of a large multi-unit apartment building) from Upsala Glacier near El Calafate, Argentina twists, turns and breaks into pieces as we cruise by. Most dramatic action begins about 1:10 into the video. 14 December 2012.

INCREDIBLE COLLAPSE TRIGGERED BY GLACIER CALVING | South America, Chile

An incredibly large chunk of the Grey Glacier's ice-sheet breaks off and flips over in a spectacular way in Southern Patagonia, Chile. The ice-sheet of the Grey Glacier is currently declining due to increasing temperatures and changes in rainfall. It is part of the 'Southern Patagonian Ice Field', the world's 2nd largest contiguous extrapolar ice field and the largest freshwater reservoir in South America.

The Grey Glacier is famous for insane glacier wall collapses during the summer when large icebergs – often up to 100 feet in height – are breaking off the glacier and collapsing into the water of the 'Lago Grey'. In the right time of the year big blocks of ice break off the glacier and drop into the water. The waves created by such glacier calving events often splash dozens of meters through the air. The glacier itself is about 6 km (3.7 mi) wide and has an average height of over 30 m (100 ft) above the surface of the water.

Thankfully, no-one was injured as boats stay at a safe distance from the glacier (for a good reason).

Glacier calving, also known as ice calving, or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. The sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier or iceberg often causes large waves around the area and can result in a shooter which is a large chunk of the submerged portion of the iceberg surfacing above the water. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, bergy bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway. The entry of the ice into the water causes large, and often hazardous waves. (Find out more here:

INCREDIBLE COLLAPSE TRIGGERED BY GLACIER CALVING in Perito Moreno, Patagonia, Argentina | Glacier

We don't know it is global warming effect on glaciers, due to climate change or something else but Sometimes huge amount of ice release from glacier which is called glacier calving in Greenland, South Sawyer glacier, glacier national park, Montana, Alaska, Antarctica and many more places in the earth.

Ice calving, also known as glacier calving or iceberg calving, is the breaking of ice chunks from the edge of a glacier. It is a form of ice ablation or ice disruption and is normally caused by the glacier expanding.

It is the sudden release and breaking away of a mass of ice from a glacier, iceberg, ice front, ice shelf, or crevasse. The ice that breaks away can be classified as an iceberg, but may also be a growler, berg bit, or a crevasse wall breakaway.

Super-Glacier PERITO MORENO: Breaking, Calving and Collapsing - Patagonia, Argentina FULL VERSION

It's big. Perhaps the most interesting of Perito Moreno glacier is its sheer scale. Covering a total of 250 square kilometers, the glacier is 5 kilometers wide and rises 78 meters above the lake Lago Argentino, with its deepest point stretching to approximately 700 meters. It is one of the most important tourist attractions in the Argentinian Patagonia.

The mighty Perito Moreno glacier is one of the most spectacular sights in Argentine Patagonia. Located in the Los Glaciares National Park, the Perito Moreno glacier is one of the largest of the 48 glaciers emanating from Patagonia’s Southern Ice Field. the Southern Patagonian Ice Field located in the Andes system shared with Chile. This ice field is the world's third largest reserve of fresh water

What is the most interesting fact about the glacier is that The Perito Moreno Glacier is one of only three Patagonian glaciers and of very few glaciers in the world that are not retreating even in contemporary conditions of Global warming. Glacier is one of the fastest moving in the world with daily pace of more than 2 meters.

I visited Patagonia in February and March of 2020 just couple of days before COVID closed travel opportunity. Because of that my trip was cut short but I managed to visit three most important destination which were main reason for the trip to Patagonia. Parque Nacional Torres del Paine in Chile, Fitz Roy and Cerro Torre in Argentina and Los Glaciares National Park with Perito Moreno.
One might stay facing the glaciers for days – from morning to evening – and that always something interesting going on there. Calving/Breaking is obviously most exciting so I presenting in program five smaller and medium collapses of glacier which are always loudly appreciate by herds of tourist as you could here in the program.

Cheers – More about my trip to Patagonia next time.

Glaciers and Icebergs - Lago Argentino, Patagonia

One of the most amazing things I've ever seen is the glaciar Upsala in Patagonia, Argentina. After a two thours boat ride from El Calafate, passing huuuuuge icebergs, you finally get to the this incredible wiiiiiide glaciar! It's like beeing in the antarctica!

On Lago Argentina in Patagonia some of the world's most fascinating glaciers can be viewed closely. We happened to be right at the Spegazzini glacier just as a piece of the massive glacier calved into the lake.

Perito Moreno, one of the largest glaciers in Glaciers National Park in South America. Its walls tower over two-hundred vertical feet (forty meters) from the ground, where the ice meets the Lago Argentino, or Lake Argentina. At this height, equivalent to that of a fifteen-story building, the glacier maintains a commanding presence for approximately five kilometers of horizontal distance. At times the glacier will form an imposing panoramic wall, stretching as far as the eye can see in either direction. Lucky to catch the calving of the glacier forming icebergs every few minutes. We were on a cruise boat 300m from the south face.
