IVORY COAST: Man to Yamoussoukro to Abidjan. ONLY PROBLEMS! // EPS 14

Overland traveling is always full of surprises - good ones, and bad ones. Mostly it’s about exploring foreign countries and cultures - but sometimes the challenges you meet on the road need nearly all your attention. Here is what happened in Côte D’Ivoire:

My travel partner had the worst crash of the journey so far: A local motorcyclist crossed his way and he fell when breaking - his side pannier crashing on his ankle. He was stuck under his motorcycle until I lifted it up. The next days we were trying to rush to Abidjan as fast as possible to get him to a proper hospital because his ankle was swollen on twice the size. From the city Man we drove to the capital of Ivory Coast: Yamoussoukro. After a short visit of Notre Dame de Yamoussoukro we continued to Abidjan - where my travel partner decided that he is fine again and doesn't need to get to the hospital anymore. But another challenge was waiting for us: The tires we had sent from Europe were lost by DHL and we had to find new rear tires for our big motorcycles in Abidjan. Watch the episode to find out if we managed and join some sighseeing to St. Paul's cathedral and a rubber tree plantation!

Abidjan -Ivory Coast 1981 - part 2 archive footage

archival footage
Super8 world tour
According to oral tradition of the Tchaman as reported in the Encyclopedic Dictionary of Côte d'Ivoire, the name Abidjan results from a misunderstanding. Legend states that an old man carrying branches to repair the roof of his house met a European explorer who asked him the name of the nearest village. The old man did not speak the language of the explorer, and thought that he was being asked to justify his presence in that place. Terrified by this unexpected meeting, he fled shouting min-chan m'bidjan, which means in the Ébrié language: I just cut the leaves. The explorer, thinking that his question had been answered, recorded the name of the locale as Abidjan.

A slightly different and less elaborate version of the legend: When the first colonists asked a native man the name of the place, the man misunderstood and replied M'bi min djan: I've just been cutting leaves.

TOGO: 24 HOURS in one of the smallest countries of Africa // EPS 17

One country, 24 hours, no time to loose: How we crossed Togo within 24 hours and tried to see as much as possible of one of the smallest countries of africa.

It was hot, it was sweaty and it took us a long while until we were issued our visa on arrivals for Togo. But once in the country we immediatlly fell in love with the easy atmosphere.
Togo might be one of the smalles countries of Africa - and even though we only stayed 24 hours we were able to ride some interesting roads: From sandy small tracks to brand new highways along Kapok (cotton) trees and to the border of Benin. Join our 24h journey through Togo!

//NOTE: videos were recorded before I had a Youtube Channel - initially used for my Instagram stories. That's the reason for the close ups of my face or bad quality of videos - they were recorded vertically. I still decided to use them - that's the authentic footage I have and I can't change that anymore. Remember: I just started out with filming and cutting - its a learning curve and far from perfect! Promise: my next trips after the country Benin will have much improved footage!

7 Things NOT To Do in The Ivory Coast

Cote d'Ivoire or Ivory Coast is located on the west coast of Africa and is not at all what you'd expect from a sub-Saharan desert country. It is the most bio-diverse country in west-Africa and has beautiful coastlines, mountains, ruins, forests, and even a cathedral. In 60 years of independence from the French, it has suffered civil wars, military coups, and shady elections but is now enjoying a certain, if vulnerable, stability. Even so, there are some things to bear in mind before traveling. Here are 7 Things NOT To Do In Ivory Coast!

1. Money
Don't forget to bring cash as well as your visa card. although in large towns and cities ATMs are available they are generally unreliable and often have very long queues. Be sure to have euros or USD on you, which you can change into West African Francs as needed. If you change money with money changers always exchange small amounts, know the exchange rate and check the notes carefully!

2. Don't go in the summer!
Though it may seem like a good idea to go on holiday in the summer. Ivory coast's rainy season starts in June and runs through to October. In this season National parks tend to be closed and roads can be washed out or impassable making travel a lot more complicated.

3. Don't forget to get a visa!
To be able to travel to Ivory coast, you need a visa! getting it upon arrival isn't possible so you need to make sure you get it beforehand. You can apply for it at your nearest Ivorian consulate via mail, or in person, or if you're planning on visiting neighboring countries you can apply for it in one of Ivory coast's embassies there. Bear in mind that it will take at least a few days so it could be that you're stuck in that country waiting for your visa.

4. Don't expect cheap accommodation!
Don't expect hostels or Airbnb or guesthouses, the main form of accommodation in Ivory coast is small to medium-sized hotels, which you won't have to book in advance but you can expect to pay first-world prices for third world service.

5. Don't forget to learn un peu de Francais!
There isn't a traveler's scene in Ivory coast, aside from french package tour visitors, the majority of tourism is local and therefore not many people speak English. French is the native tongue so be sure to learn some basics that could get you out of a situation difficile!

6. Don't forget your Passport!
Always carry your passport or at least a copy of the visa page and the photo page. There are a lot of checkpoints on the road and you'll be expected to show your passport and sometimes asked to exit your vehicle and talk to the police. be polite and compliant to avoid any hassle.

7. Don't expect it to be easy!
If you're traveling to Ivory coast independently, don't expect it to be easy. West Africa isn't like South Africa, it's less developed, rougher, and has fewer amenities. you can expect challenges, complications, and for things to go wrong. It won't be relaxing or easy, it will, however, be fun!

Which country should we do next?

REACHING AFRICA: From Germany to Morocco. Europes best roads // EPS 1

Who wants to go around Africa, first has to get to Africa. Before the big West Africa adventure could start, I had to ride from Europe/Germany to Morocco. The late delivery of my new motorcycle, a Yamaha Tenere 700, delayed my trip for weeks – so I had only two weeks left to ride from Munich in Germany to Dakhla in Morocoo/Western Sahara crossind Switzerland, Italy, France, Andorra, Spain and Morocco. More than 5000 Kilometers within 14 days. In this episode I will introduce my travel partner – and some of the most scenic offroad routes in Europe, such as: Strada dell'Assietta, Colle du Parpaillon, the old smuggler roads to Andorra from Tor close to the Pyrenees and part of the TET (Trans European Trail) in the Sierra Nevada Mountain range in Spain. In Morocco we visited Casablanca, Essaouira, Sidi Ifni and ended this transport ride in Dakhla. Join the journey to West Africa!

SENEGAL: Riding under Baobab Trees & the secret salt pools of Palmarin // EPS 5.

Departure from Dakar, riding under Baobab Trees and the secret salt pools of Palmarin - join the second part of the journey through Senegal.

After the clutch discs finally arrived in Dakar we gave our motorcycles a service (thank you, CFAO Dakar for taking care about the Fox). After two weeks of waiting we were finally ready to leave Dakar! And we were on a mission: we were looking for the most beautiful Baobab Trees of the country and the some salt pools that I had seen pictures of online - but actually had no clue about where they really are. Join the journey and find out if we succeded!

//NOTE: videos were recorded before I had a Youtube Channel - initially used for my Instagram stories. That's the reason for the close ups of my face - they were recorded vertically. If you mind seeing my nose hair every now and then, I can highly recommend you to skip this part of the journey and join again when I will publish my next trips after the country Benin with hopefully improved footage!

GUINEA CONAKRY: Crashs in the FOUTA DJALLON region & Kambadaga waterfalls // EPS. 8

Crashs, waterfalls, and challenging roads: Welcome to the Fouta Djallon region in Guinea - one of my favorite places on this trip so far!

Each country I ever visited I fell in love with – even if it was only for a short minute. But Guinea-Conakry made me fall in love each single second I stayed. Why? Because of its challenges. But also because of its breathtaking beauty, and its untouched nature.

After crossing the border of Guinea-Bissau to Guinea-Conakry at the border post Fulamory, there was already the first surprise waiting: a hand-pulled ferry that brought us over the river. Little did we know that the real challenges were still waiting: A very bad, sandy road - which ended up in two crashs.

The next days we headed torwards Labé, the capital of the region Fouta Djallon. The highlands of Fouta Djallon are often called the watertower - or in French: 'le chateau d'eau' , of West Africa. Sometimes people as well refer to the region as the 'Switzerland of West Africa'. We found out why on a excursion to Kambadaga waterfalls.
Join the journey in through the Fouta Djallon region of Guinea and find out, how it feels to ride in 40+ degrees, on sandy roads or when standing on a majestic waterfall!

Cote d'Ivoire Part 1 ~ Travel||First Day||Party

Family trip to Cote d'lvoire

LIBERIA: The HIGHEST MOUNTAINS of West Africa! Nimba Mountain motorcycle expedition // Eps 13

Three countries meet on top of a mountain - one of the highest located places in all of west africa. This journey will not only bring us to an interesting junction - but will take us to the heart of westafrica. Join the motorcycle expedition from the mining town Yekepa in Liberia to the top of Nimba mountain, where Liberia, Guinea and Cote D’Ivoire meet.

The area around Yekepa is highly used for mining and more or less owned by an indian steel company - including gated roads. There is only one hotel to stay as a foreigner and the only place to find food is the canteen of the workers of the mines.

To be able to ride to the top of Mount Nimba, we asked advice of the rangers of Nimba Nature Reserve who showed us the way up the small and steep trails. Follow our motorcycle expedition to the highest mountain range of west africa - and join our ride to a breathtaking blue lake and abandonned steel factory.

WESTERN SAHARA to MAURITANIA: from Dakhla to the most dangerous border of the world // EPS.2

Three months after we drove the motorcycles to Dakhla, we continued our journey in the desert of Morocco/Western Sahara. We had heard many nightmare stories about the border of Mauritania ahead (it was supposed to be the most dangerous border in the world with a lawless No Man's land with landmines and small sandy tracks). But our first obstacle when returning to Dakhla was to find a motorcycle garage for changing the tires of our bikes before we could enjoy the oasis of Dakhla for Kitesurfing. A little break before we really started our adventure ride south through the desert on the westcoast of Africa. On the way through Morocco/ Western Sahara we came across many checkpoints, beautiful dunes and amazing landscapes before we finally hit the border of Mauritania...

But we finally made it: In this first episode of my Expedition North we rode from Switzerland to Germany, from Frankfurt to Hamburg and the German Sea. And we visited a very speical place: The coastal town Eckernförde where my father was born. Join me on my new journey!

Our Amazing Ivory Coast Trip

Full video of our trip to Ivory Coast in November 2019.

This was my first time ever trying B-Roll and shooting in general. Christelle (my fiancee) planned the trip so I had no idea what I would be filming and she had no idea I wanted to film. It was impossible to capture everything I experienced but I'm happy with what I was able to put together. Considering all I used was my android phone and Osmo Mobile 3 for a gimbal, I hope I did Cote D'Ivoire some kind of justice.

Ivory Coast is the 5th African county that I've experienced and it definitely has a place in my heart, especially because it is the home country of ma peche and her family. Some of the places we visited include Abidjan, Assinie, and Basilique Notre-Dame de la Paix.

Feel free to provide constructive criticism. I'm always open to improving and I don't know whether or not I will attempt filming again. I did like that it allowed me to be in the moment more compared to photography. For the most part I captured on the go and moved on.

Nile crocodiles in Yamoussoukro, Cote D'Ivoire

One thing worth visiting in Yam is nile crocodiles. There live quite a bunch of them in the lakes of Yamoussoukro.

I had never seen nile crocodiles before and found them interesting. They are mostly under the water during the day and come out at sunset time. Sometimes you can see the nile crocodile feeders feeding them at around 5 pm.

Local people also like to come to the lake watch them, I met some kids with a fake plastic iphone and they are taking “selfies”. fun time.

Ep.14 Le paradis.... Côte d'Ivoire ????????

Après 4 mois rude sur les routes Africaines, un peut de répit en Côte d'Ivoire les plages, les lagunes et surtout l'attiéké

Swimming in Waterfalls and Hiking in Man, Côte d'Ivoire

This is the day I went hiking up one of the tallest mountains in West Africa. After the hike, and some amazing views, we went down to a beautiful waterfall near the town of Man, Cote d'Ivoire.
The city of Man was really affected during the civil war. As a result, tourism is slow now. However, with so many incredible places and things to see, I can only imagine that travellers here will come back soon.
