VENICE CITY OF WATER (ITALY)

Venice is one of the most interesting and lovely places in the world. Venice, Italy, is known by several names, one of which is the ‘Floating City’. This is due to the fact that the city of Venice consists of 118 small islands connected by numerous canals and bridges. Yet, the buildings in Venice were not built directly on the islands. Instead, they were built upon wooden platforms that were supported by wooden stakes driven into the ground.

Venice is an amazing city and completely unique. Being surrounded by water, with canals running through, hundreds of bridges to cross and many islands to visit, it is no wonder it is a fascinating destination for tourists to come and check out. Unfortunately Venice has become a bit of a gimmick and is over saturated with tourists shops, restaurants, tours and over priced hotels, which is such a shame as it can really ruin the authenticity of a visit. I have been lucky enough to have seen both sides to Venice, the touristy side and the local side, if you venture beyond the tourist traps Venice is, in my opinion, so much more enjoyable.

Venice also known as city of water, Venetian: Venesia or is a city in northeastern Italy and the capital of the Veneto region. It is situated on a group of 118 small islands that are separated by canals and linked by over 400 bridges. The islands are located in the shallow Venetian Lagoon, an enclosed bay that lies between the mouths of the Po and the Piave rivers (more exactly between the Brenta and the Sile). In 2018, 260,897 people resided in the Comune di Venezia, of whom around 55,000 live in the historical city of Venice (centro storico). Together with Padua and Treviso, the city is included in the Padua-Treviso-Venice Metropolitan Area (PATREVE), which is considered a statistical metropolitan area, with a total population of 2.6 million. The floating city of Venice, one of the most extraordinary cities in the world was built on 118 islands in the middle of the Venetian Lagoon at the head of the Adriatic Sea in Northern Italy. For travelers who have visited Venice and for those who have yet to go, Venice remains a beautiful mystery. It seems impossible for such a grand city to be floating in a lagoon of water, reeds and marshland. This is a place you must see to believe.

Venice is a city of immense beauty and historical significance, but it is also unique and not like any other city in Italy. As the capital of the Veneto Region of Northern Italy, Venice actually lies on 117 small islands that are connected by a series of bridges and separated by a network of canals. Venice has literally hundreds of canals that connect the various islands that make up the city – the largest of which is the Canale Grande.

To truly experience Venice, you must experience if from the water! The Vaporetto is the main form of transport in Venice. It is one of the quickest ways of travelling to the various islands of Venice, particularly in open waters beyond the walls of the city where the waters are too choppy for the local Gondola!

However, for inland navigation and sightseeing, the small boats and the local Gondolas fit right in! Personally, at 10 times the usual fare when compared to a water taxi, I would mark the Gondola as an experience rather than convenience or a means of transport!

okay question: looking at the price and experience, which one would you choose, a water taxi or a gondola? Let me know in your comments!

Water taxi = 7.5 Euro for 30 mins (Public transport)
Gondola = 80 Euros for 30 mins (Private transport)
