The 10 Most Beautiful Places to Visit in Italy.
It’s amazing how many Italians don’t go abroad for their holidays. When I taught English in Rome I used to ask my students why they didn’t visit other countries. They simply replied: “Why would we? We have incredible culture, some of the best beaches in Europe and mountains to go skiing in the winter!” Italy is undoubtedly beautiful and I feel privileged to have spent three years of my life there. It’s a unique country where you are just as likely to find beauty in a quiet cobbled backstreet or a traditional trattoria than in its stunning beaches or extraordinary countryside. Using my experience of living in Italy I have compiled a list of ten places I feel are worth visiting. Some will be obvious, others maybe not so. Here is my personal list of 10 of the most beautiful places to visit in Italy…
Venice
Cinque Terre
Bologna
Florence and the Tuscany region
Rome
Sorrento & The Amalfi Coast
Sardinia
Puglia
Sicily

Visit Italy - The DON'Ts of Visiting Italy

Read the Blog on What Tourists Should Not Do When They Visit Italy:
GRAB A WOLTERS WORLD SHIRT
What You Shouldn't Do When You Are in Italy
Visiting Italy is an amazing experience whether you are seeing the Roman ruins throughout the country in places like Rome or Naples, but for all the amazing things you should do in Italy (visit Venice, Florence, Rome, Ravenna, Amalfi Coast, eat until you explode) there are things you DON'T DO when you come to Italy & Here are our 12 things NOT TO DO in Italy when you are traveling Italy.
Filmed in Vicenza, Italy
Copyright Mark Wolters 2016

The Don'ts of Italy
1. Don't expect to get discount prices on fancy Italian luxury brands.

2. Don't eat near tourist sights. You will be ripped off and not get as good of Italian food as you would away from the tourist sights.

3. Don't Tip. They already charge you for service.
4. You Don't have to scream louder to get people to understand you.
5. Don't worry about overdressing, the Italians will always look better than you.
6. Don't just visit Rome and Venice, there is so much more to Italy.
7. Don't share your pizza and make sure you do eat it with your fork and knife.
8. Don't use the fast trains for short distances, they are not worth the significantly higher prices.
9. Don't expect to see spaghetti and meatballs on the menu TOGETHER. They will be there separately, but not together.
10. Don't expect a big breakfast in Italy. Just coffee and a cookie.
11. Don't overpack. You will be limited on space when traveling in Italy so pack accordingly.
12. Don't expect to be served food in a restaurant between 3pm and 7pm.

Places Featured:

1) The Water Bus / Taxi (vaporetti)

The water bus is 8 euros for a one way ticket into San Marco square. You have to pay an extra fee for having luggage. It's a very stylish and convenient way to haul your luggage closer to your hotel or AirBnb.

2) Palazzo Vitturi
This was built in the second half of the 13th century. They have done a lot of remodeling since then. This place is really well maintained. Such a romantic place!

3) Grand Canal

During the first half of the 15th century, two rows of shops were built along side of the bridge. The rental income helps to maintain the bridge.

4) Doge’s palace

Doge’s Palace is the old home of the ruler of Venice (“Doge” is similar to a “Duke” and they were elected as ruler for life).

5) Bell tower of St. Mark

Also known as “St Mark’s Campanile,” this bell tower looms over the Piazza San Marco and it’s impossible to miss.

6) Clock Tower

Also known as St. Mark’s Clock Tower (Torre dell’Orologio), this structure is has been around since the 15th century.

7) Bridge of Sighs

The Bridge of Sighs – what a sad name. It was built in 1600 and it was called “the bridge of sighs” because it was the last thing that prisoners saw before they were hauled off to prison on the other side of the bridge.

8) Big hands

OK, I don’t think these giant hands are made during ancient times.
When you are walking along, it’s really surprising to see these 5000 lb giant hands!

9) Rialto Bridge

This is the oldest bridge that crosses the Grand Canal – it was built 800 years ago in the 12th century.

10) Saint Mark’s Basilica

St Mark’s Basilica, also known as “Church of Gold” (Chiesa d’Oro”) is a grand, opulent church that was finished in 1092.

As a tourist, my perspective of this place is a happy romantic getaway with lots of food and happy people walking around, but this is far from the true reality for real locals living in Venice. This place was once the most elegant and refined city in Europe and it was a taste-maker in the arts, architecture and literature.

You see lots of people walking around and sightseeing in the daytime but once night falls the city becomes a ghost town.
Many locals have moved away from Venice due to the higher rent costs and perhaps due to the possibility that it’s literally sinking into the ground.

Venice is now just a glorified one day vacation stop for tourism. Some even call it an expensive theme park.

The flood barrier that the city was supposed to build has been tied down for many years now due to government corruption. With everything Venice has against it, I really hope the people of Italy can come together to save a piece of their history. It would be sad to see Venice as a tourist “Disneyland” or worse, no longer existing at all.

10 Top Tourist Attractions in Florence - Travel Video

The capital city of Italy’s Tuscany region, Florence is internationally esteemed for its high concentration of Renaissance art and architecture. Because it served as a wealthy and important center for medieval trade and commerce, the city gave birth to the Italian Renaissance movement. Florence is also credited with propagating many artists, inventors, writers, scientists and explorers as well as inventing opera and the florin currency, which lifted Europe from the Dark Ages.

Simulating one enormous outdoor art museum, the city of Florence attracts millions of tourists every year. Walking is the best way to see the major sites in the city center. Some of the best places to walk include the Ponte Vecchio, a beautiful bridge spanning the Arno River and featuring a number of high-end jewelry shops. Venice in a Day: Hidden Gems & Top Attractions

The Top Ten Things to See in the Vatican Museums

10. The Egyptian Gallery - The collection is so interesting because of the relationship between the Roman Empire and Egypt. As you might know, Mark Antony and Julius Caesar both had relations with Cleopatra. The collection occupies five rooms; plan to spend about 25 minutes in each.

9. Vatican Gardens - Take a stroll past innumerable grottoes, antiquities and world-class landscaping. Did you know there are 100 fountains in the Vatican Gardens? Unlike the Vatican Museums, the gardens are never crowded. One way to access the Vatican Gardens by booking a full day tour of the Vatican Museums, Gardens and Castle Gandolfo with The Roman Guy.

8. Pinacoteca - The Pinacoteca (Picture Gallery) is one of the more modern sections of the Vatican Museums and is often overlooked. Get up close and personal to 460 works of art, painted by the likes of Caravaggio, Raphael, Titian, Leonardo, Guido Reni and Giotto.

7. Pinecone Courtyard - Named after the colossal bronze pinecone that once stood near the Pantheon next to the Temple of Isis, the Pinecone Courtyard was designed by Donato Bramante. From here catch an amazing view of St. Peter's Dome. Sometimes the guards let you spin the giant fractured sphere sculpture in the center of the spacious courtyard.

6. Pio-Clementino Museum - The Vatican's Pio-Clementino Museum is one of Rome's best collections of ancient Greek and Roman statues. In the octagonal Belvedere Courtyard, check out the Apollo Belvedere, Laocoön and His Sons and the Belvedere Torso. Then visit the biggest and oldest bathtubs you’ll ever see.
