As the island's culture was more and more influenced by the rest of the world's views on prostitution, this practice ended. Here's a view of a modern men's house...

Micronesia | Yap | Betel Nut Heaven

Yap is around 400 kilometers north of Palau. It is barely untouched and is highly traditional.

Betel Nut has a long history in the Pacific Islands, its use can be traced back as far as 2,000 years.
Betel Nut chewing and its customary red smile amongst the population is a common sight in Yap.

Many people chew betel nut for the energy it produces. This is likely due to the nut's natural alkaloids, which releases adrenaline. Its commonly chewed after being ground up or sliced or wrapped in leaves of the Piper Belle vine that has been coated with lime.

It is one of the most popular psychoactive substances in the world.

Behind the Lens: Ceremonial Dancing on Yap Island, Micronesia

Expedition Filmmaker Denis Elterman witnessed a unique ceremonial display of dancing on Yap Island in Micronesia. A remote speck of land in the Federated States of Micronesia, Yap Island is set approximately 500 miles southwest of Guam and 300 miles northeast of Palau in the Pacific Ocean.

Home to the Yapese people—a Micronesian ethnic group that has been influenced over centuries by the Spanish, Japanese, Germans and Americans—Yap’s position is so remote that only 4,000 visitors reach the island’s shores each year. The destination exudes character, with a rich culture that is showcased with pride at communal gatherings.
