We rented a car in San Pedro de Atacama and drove through the Atacama Desert. Laguna Chaxa was our first stop which is a huge salt flat region surrounded by the Andes Mountains and filled with flamingos! Next were two gorgeous blue lakes - Laguna Miscanti and Laguna Miniques where we had a picnic with a view!

Our week-long road trip through the oldest and driest desert on Earth showcased spectacular varied landscapes, from salt flats to snow-covered volcanos, home to flamingos and llamas, and some of the most fascinating geological history of our spectacular planet! We camped in a tent, stargazed at the milky way, and barely made it out alive after smashing the rental car on a very sketchy mining road.

Enjoy this 4K travel vlog from the Atacama Desert in Chile! We spent 5 days in San Pedro de Atacama, the driest and darkest place on earth. The landscape in Chile was truly stunning and we had so much fun on our day trips through the Atacama Desert and the Altiplano (high plateau). Being on more than 4,000 meters elevation was challenging and the cold temperatures during the Chilean winter were extreme!
We booked our tours with Layana Travel in San Pedro de Atacama and were very happy with them!

Travel to the wilderness of the Atacama desert.
Norte Grande, literally 'Great North', is located in the far north of Chile, north of the 26th parallel. It includes the administrative regions of Antofagasta, Arica and Tarapacá. The Norte Grande is one of the driest parts in the world, a large part is occupied by the Atacama Desert, and is therefore very sparsely populated. The largest places are Antofagasta, Arica, Calama, Iquique and Tocopilla.

There are few places around the world that truly take your breath away, but the Atacama Desert is one of those places that’ll leave you breathless… and that’s not just because of the high altitude!
I've wanted to go back to the Atacama Desert ever since I first set foot in it back in 2012.
Then, I hardly spent any time exploring this beautiful part of the world, but I always knew I'd be back.
This time around I took a tour to see the El Tatio geysers, the pink flamingos at Chaxa Lagoon, the mountain lagoons of Miniques and Miscanti, before finally watching the sun set in the Valle de la Luna, the Valley of the Moon.
The Atacama Desert really is like no where else I've been, so here's what I got up to on my tour of the Atacama Desert. Enjoy!

CHILE - roadtrip in Atacama desert
We rented a van to travel for a week in the Atacama desert in Chile. Which is the driest place in the world. We swam/floated in salted lagoons, went up to 4320m to see El tatio geysers, explored a canyon with huge cactuses, saw beautiful volcanoes and explored the moon valley. We slept each night in the middle of the desert under a million stars sky. For Christmas we camped near the cactus canyon, we built a campfire, drank wine, ate pasta, watched the sunset over the giant cactuses and laid upside down in the van to look at the stars. And it's definitely the best Christmas we've ever spent.
